If you sell less than $ 30,000.00 per year, you do NOT need to register or charge GST.
It is that simple.

You do realize you replied to 10 year old thread ??
with incorrect information.
It's $30 000 in a 12 month period not per year.
And you must charge GST/HST if you are registered (there is no $30000 exemption once you are registered).
You do not charge GST/HST if you are not registered.

That $30,000 total includes sales plus postage.
----------------------------------------------------
It may be advantageous to register for GST./HST..
IF... your input tax credit is greater than the amount paid by buyers.
such as .... you buy your inventory in Canada and pay GST/HST.... and sell to USA buyers primarily...
and you get a refund of GST/HST from the government

Mandatory.*
And no.
Until you hit $30,000 in sales it is not mandatory.
If you are buying a lot of material in Canada and exporting it, you are eligible for 'export tax credits' but you would be selling quite a bit before the cost of keeping track of the GST you pay offsets the tax credits you get.
More important,
Do some buying on eBay before you start to sell.
This will build up your feedback which is an important measure of trustworthiness.
Suggested purchases are shipping supplies, a digital metric scale, and a measuring tape.
And keep careful records of all the money you spend on your business as well as of the money you take in.
While GST/HST/PST is not important right now, you will be reporting your profits as income come next April.
Best wishes on your new adventure.
