Lots of people lying about recieving cards

Hey everyone

I appologize in advance if this isnt the right section for me to post this in.

I wanna know how many sellers like myself have run into problems with buyers who've said they never received an item.

So before covid started everything was going great , I've been buying and selling on ebay for about 5 years now with 100% feedback in sales.

Now covid comes along and I got about 10 people who bought hockey cards from me stating they never recieved there items.

Understandable but Canada post is delayed and shipping is taking awhile longer.

They ask for a refund and I try to stall it cause I wanna see if they get there card .

Anyways long story short

I had refined all 10 customers there money because Ebay would've went in the favour of them anyhow.

I asked all 10 if you get the card or cards can you please do the right thing and let me know so I can either get partial payment back or full payment

Outta the 10 people who got the money back 0 of them contacted me.

I'm very disappointed that I'm now out 700$ Canadian because of these ppl taking advantage of covid.

Ebay should be ashamed of themselves aswell for going in favour of the buyer during this time.

I'm so upset about it but here I am for round 2 trying to make extra money for my family in these hard times.

I think I learned a lesson though. I always provide video proof of my shipment now so they cant go back and say I never send it to them.

It's my proof for Ebay if it escalades further.

I just wish that Ebay would compensate me a little bit of the money I lost as I am now out hundreds.

If anyone can explain to me a way to get help with this I'd be very appreciative.

Sorry for my rant

Lots of people lying about recieving cards

I've only been sending items I've sold for under $20 without tracking these days. My threshold used to be $50... not anymore. Too many delays in lettermail- and too many broke buyers out there looking to extend their free ride during the pandemic.

Start using tracking

There was mention above of Registered Mail.

Just a WARNING Registered Mail is now only tracked domestically. Use it if you are shipping within Canada, but not to the USA or overseas.

And $9.75 is the cost for registration, the actual postage is on top of that, so the cost is very close to the price of Expedited Canada (with our Solutions for Small Business discounts) or Tracked Package USA.

And adding to Not Received disputes.

If you do have a tracked shipment that is in transit, always give the tracking number in the Dispute.

Even if you did not track, always respond, even if it is just to ask politely for a few days (until Friday or Monday seems to be most agreeable to the customer) to allow for that 4-5 day delay that seems still to be happening.

With the attempt of the Trump White House to make the USPS unreliable as a vote suppression plan, and with the pushback from the postal worker's union to give priority to mail-in ballots, we can look forward to more disruption within the USPS.

The suggestion to extend handling time from 48 hours to five, seven or even 30 days may be useful again for the next few months .
If we promise arrival in five days and the shipping takes six, we have an unhappy customer.
If we promise arrival in 20 days and it arrives in six, we have a happy customer.

Lots of people lying about recieving cards

This thread is a few months old. During the time frame when this post was made, some lettermail orders were taking 20+ days within the province. Some orders were taking 30-40 days.

It is more likely that the issue the seller had was that buyers didn't understand these delays, figured the package was lost, and opened cases. If his buyers eventually received the cards without contacting him to re-pay, he was effectively scammed, but it's not as straight forward as a situation where a buyer purchases something with the intention from the get go to scam the seller.

Most buyers who I had to refund because of shipping delays eventually contacted me to re-pay. But I also communicated to them that it was an option. Some buyers may not understand it is possible and may not know what to do when the package eventually arrives really late.

You might be costing yourself money.

You are going to get scammed without tracking. It is part of the cost of doing business, just like buying shipping supplies, or buying stamps.

When you pay for tracking, you're effectively paying 10-15 dollars in insurance for each transaction. For that to make sense with a 20 dollar purchase, there has to be some serious red flags, or it has to be an extremely high risk category.

You might say, well the buyer is paying the extra shipping....but economically speaking, if you can sell something for 20+15 shipped, it's worth 35 dollars. If you can deliver it for 2-5 dollars shipped via lettermail, you're making an additional 10 dollars for each sale. Or, you can lower your price by 13 dollars, and make a greater volume of sales because your price would be more competitive.

If you're selling $21 items with tracking (So about 35 total to the customer), you have to "lose" 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 items for it to make sense (depending on final total cost). You cost yourself more by paying an additional 12 in tracking times the amount of transactions you do than you would cost yourself if you left yourself open to being scammed.

Of course, everybody has a different level of risk tolerance, and every category is different. But from an economics perspective, you might be costing yourself significant money.

As I've said on other response sections, I ordered Items, Cards, believing they're complete sets. Turns out, they were individual prices. Anyway, lesson learned.
