My first time facing a chargeback!

I get on my selling account today and wonderful... I got a banned buyer dispute chargeback with their bank. 3 months after sale! I remember this buyer buying then being no longer registered right away. I always wondered if should still ship items after seeing a buyer is no long registered, just got the answer.

The item was shipped lettermail so i do not have proof of delivery! The buyer isn't supposed to be covered by ebay money back guarantee, it's been 3 months. The buyer claimed to the bank 'did not recognize the transaction'

Any way to not lose my money there? How i'm supposed to deal with this dispute?

It's unbelivable i'm not under selling protection and this was approved!

Unfortunately, there isn’t. You need to provide evidence that the item was sent to the address in the transaction details and you don’t have that for something sent as a letter.

Don’t try to contest the chargeback. You will have to pay a chargeback resolution fee of $20 if and when you lose.

Remember that this is the buyer’s bank that allowed the chargeback, not eBay. The Money Back Guarantee is something completely different.

Sorry I don't have better news.

That's so junk. The sale was in october and this buyer got instantly banned after buying (most likely for scamming like this). Ebay should protect sellers better than that. Do you know if we got our FVF back by refunding? I see they claim the full amount. It says i have to refund $38 while my earnings were like $33.

And, you still shipped to them anyway?

And using Lettermail to boot?

I would have refunded that Buyer and not shipped ASAP, the warning signs were all there, and you stated as such in your post, but the $$s from the sale was more appealing than some basic common sense.

But you still shipped no tracking anyway...

You cannot contest the Chargeback you have nothing to prove that you shipped, the fact that the Buyer became  "no longer registered" before you shipped and you shipped anyway, falls on you solely.

Tracking is so useful, I know when I had a PayPal chargeback, it was refused by the bank once the tracking showed it was delivered to the address and buyer.

https://www.ebay.ca/help/selling/getting-paid/handling-payment-disputes?id=4799&st=3&pos=3&query=Han...

A payment dispute is when a buyer requests their money back by reporting an issue with their order to their bank, credit card provider, PayPal, or other payment institution. This is different to our eBay Money Back Guarantee, when your buyer reports an issue with their order on eBay. The disputed amount may be placed on hold until the issue is resolved. This is different to a hold being placed on your payouts, when you may need to take further action on your eBay account to resolve the issue.

When your buyer opens a payment dispute, we’ll contact you to let you know what the next steps are. To respond, you'll need to either accept or challenge the payment dispute within 5 calendar days - if you don’t respond, the payment institution is likely to find in your buyer's favour. You can respond through My eBay Sold or Requests and disputes in Seller Hub.

The final outcome will be decided by the buyer’s payment institution.

Ooof! $38?

I was hoping this was a one dollar or $5 item.

Sorry, but any time we use untracked LetterMail  we are taking a chance that we will be scammed.

It's a very low chance, most eBay sellers seem to have a less than 1% "failed transaction" rate, but it's there.

Don't buy a lottery ticket today.

FWIW - your losses to chargebacks are tax deductible.

And your loss is not $38.

It is your procurement cost+eBay fees+ shipping cost.  Not the customer's payment which includes your profit had the deal gone well.

I can't comment on the chargeback mechanism, but if you are forced to refund it wouldn't hurt to call eBay or contact them on Twitter or Facebook. If you point out that the buyer's account was deleted by eBay's security department shortly after the transaction, there is a small chance that eBay might cover the refund for you as a courtesy. It's rare, but they do stuff like that from time to time.

It basically comes down to whether you think it's worth the 15 minutes to roll the dice on whether they will cover you as a courtesy.

My first time facing a chargeback!

I’ve been following your posts and I need to address something directly. It seems like a lot of your posts position you as a victim in various situations. While it’s important to share your experiences, this constant perspective might be why you’re receiving a significant amount of negative feedback.

It’s worth considering if there are other ways to interpret or handle these situations. Continually portraying oneself as a victim can not only affect your own mindset but also how others interact with you. This repeated narrative may not be the most constructive way to engage with your community or address the issues you’re facing.

I’m bringing this up because I believe self-awareness can lead to positive change. However, the frequency and nature of these posts have become overwhelming for me, and I need to disengage for my own well-being. This will be my last response to these types of discussions. I hope you take this as an opportunity for self-reflection and find more balanced ways to communicate your experiences.

My first time facing a chargeback!

I'm sorry but most regulars appreciate my threads and interacting with me. I've been talking with many people here for 3 years now. The negativity comes from the same 2-3 users replying on everything i post. And it was not like this before 2022! I did not post on the boards for a whole month and you come with a message like i posted every single day. Your reply is heavily off-topic. Personal attacks like you just did are the problem. If you don't like threads don't read them, if you don't like someone don't interact. Is that this hard...

This wasn’t an attack, it was advice.

The topic is about a chargeback situation here. Re read yourself. This is not an advice, this is personal attacks.

Thank you for proving my point as well. It's not a debate about personal, it's a thread about a chargeback.

My first time facing a chargeback!

Update. I was about to refund and take the loss, and then i contacted support just to have a talk before. Apparently i should have received an email telling me to not ship. They can't say it but it means this buyer has a clear fraud historic. At my surprise support told me to challenge the dispute! Even without tracking. They said they will apply seller's protection and provide documentation to buyer's financial institution! And that they cover me for this chargeback. They seems to take responsability for it or protect me against it as they know it's a scammer. I challenged, waiting to see!

Just to confirm, @rocketscollectibles, this advice was given through Facebook or X / Twitter and you have a transcript of the chat session for reference?

My first time facing a chargeback!

Replied earlier and it did not post for whatever reason, was still saved as draft:

Right on the ebay platform chat. I got transfer to what i guess was the security department team. I got everything indeed registered. I asked the ebay rep multiple times confirmation to challenge dispute as i had no tracking number to defend myself and knew it's a loss without it. Situation was made clear. Confirmed everytime they would cover me. So from what i understood, ebay taking responsability for the fraud. Because this buyer should not have been able to place an order and i should have received an email about it.

Here's one message in our interaction where they started telling me to challenge it:

I definitely understand that you did your part on this one as a seller already. Here's what we can do for this one, we will be asking for you to still challenge the dispute since we have fully documented here on our end that this buyer is suspended. You can document on your respond that this transaction happened last year as well and you have shipped the item already using a letter mail. You don't have to worry, as soon as you challenge this dispute we will activate your seller protection and we will provide documentation on the buyer's financial institution as well if needed.

This may be good advice but I've read about people being  sorry that they followed eBay platform advice so I would be a little wary and contact X or Facebook eBay customer service to double check.  Normallly there is no seller protection for that type of chargeback unless there is tracking confirmed delivery.  It's possible that the buyer suspension may make a difference but if it is, it's not something that's common knowledge.

Keep in mind that if you dispute the chargeback and lose, you will also owe an extra $20 dispute fee.

I suspect that if Rockets had received an email or message about the suspension, customer service would be singing a different tune.

My first time facing a chargeback!

Never know but i don't think it's a typical situation where rep said something and there was misunderstanding. Like seller getting told to accept a return but not providing a label so lose the case and blame support lol. I was in contact with most likely security department and not a general rep. They transfered me. Situation was pretty clear about having no tracking and that my defense was the documentation they have against this buyer. They made it clear that i was protected. If you guys read, the rep is kinda evasive like he know something that he can't share, but guarantee i'm covered. To me it's obvious the buyer is known for fraud and they have proofs of it. He confirm several times ebay is covering me in this case.

- If i understand. You will provide documentation about fraud historic or suspicious activites that will act in my favor?
- Ebay charge $20 fee to challenge a dispute. As i don't have tracking it feels risky for me
- $20 fee if i lose the case i mean. I do not want to be out item + $20 fee

Yes, that's correct. We will make sure that you are protected in this dispute and we will surely activate your seller protection to make sure you win this case.

-Ok thank you. So i'm guaranteed to win as ebay will cover me?

Yes, we will make sure to help you on this one.

-Just wanted confirmation as i feel unconfortable knowing i have no tracking number

I'll fully document everything so in that way, we will take action from here.

I guarantee you that this will be taken care of.

Glad to hear ebay is helping you with this! Always a good idea to contact them anytime there is an issue.

Just ignore that Eric guy... obviously someone tinkled in his Wheaties and he gets off insulting people just looking for advice. Unfortunately on forums there's a lot of trolls and you shouldn't feed them! Haha!
