‘New Head of eBay Seller Experience Details Major Changes’

I had noticed the item sold via promoted listings text earlier on seller hub, thought that was a good idea.

Some of this stuff is interesting, not sure how much I'll be able to use in my world.....

i have issues, with being a store owner, and Ebay wanting more money, to promote our listings. I thought the idea was for us to be on equal selling terms. Not for them to bury our listings if we don't cough up more money..

I like to think of things relative to the old way (before the internet) days....

In those days, I'd pay my monthly rent for my B&M store and have my position on a street somewhere. Some people would find me by noticing me when they wandered by.

To get more people to find me I would advertise. Theoretically, the more I spent on advertising, the more people would know about me and come by.

The bigger I got, the bigger and more expensive my ads (think of the car dealership ads in the paper vs a guy trying to sell his car in the classifieds).

To my mind, and I know from having said this before not everyone agrees with me, here on ebay/the internet it is no different. Those that can afford to advertise more will sell more.

I've generally experienced positive results from the various iterations of additional paid advertising here (and on all the other sites I use) over the last 19 years. Those things that didn't return well, I quit using, exactly the same concept as I used to do when my only option was (expensive) print advertising in those days long before we found ourselves here online.

So to my mind, ebay isn't really burying anything, the people who're paying for "full page ads" will be seen more than people paying for "eighth page" sized ads. It is our choice whether we want to participate in these (aka pay for them) or not. As rose? I believe pointed out, in earlier discussions, if everyone started using them the same way they wouldn't differentiate/work anymore/enough. In that case people would stop using them. Perhaps that's why we've seen so many variations of paid advertising type opportunities over the last 20 years here.

It does mean that if I have a mind to start selling brand new cell phones I am going to have a very tough time breaking into the market competing against all the big players.....which really isn't any different than it has always been.

I was pretty annoyed to find they took away our ability to relist items in bulk, then tell us we can have that service if we pay to be professional sellers. I can see professional stores definitely having more perks, they earned them and they certainly pay for them but taking away a convenience that saved us time was definitely not cool. It's never okay for a company to take a convenience away from customers then offer it back to them...at a price. I know lots of places do that, but it's just not a nice thing to do to customers at all.

The part of what's coming that raises my ire is the 'pricing' pressure.

If I'm the only one who knows what selling something is costing me, then I'm the only one who knows where I have to price it. To assume otherwise is presumptuous and insulting. My wares are rarely if ever the cheapest available; that cannot be my forte as a Canadian seller dealing in actual not-counterfeit merchandise so I compensate for it in other equally-important ways like fast and entirely dependable service and free gift with purchase.

A race to the bottom holds absolutely no interest for me. Ask any buyer who's been burned more than once by Lowest Cost first and they will agree that you get what you pay for.

As long as it is only pressure, I don't care.

I see myself similar to you in that my stuff is generally not the cheapest, but the higher price is compensated for by better/consistent customer service and support. So far that model has been working well for me.

In my world, for the bulk of what I sell, even something that is described very similarly to mine will be likely very different than my stuff (aka the mixed lots, collections etc) and so the price should be as well (either higher or lower). This means any bot initiated comparison won't be accurate anyway.

I really don't foresee them ever being able to create a realistic comparison in my world but I've been surprised before.

Anyway, if the time comes that the pressure translates to lack of visibility, I'll do what I've done in the last 19 years here, adapt once again, and find a way to still get my stuff in front of buyers. I've found a way for the last 40 years, can't imagine this will be the thing that stops me!

You can use the "new" seller hub to relist in bulk -- you do not need to have a store.

"Professional" is ebay marketing trying to spin the seller hub as an improvement over the old setup.
