New Jewelry Policy

Hoping someone a little more knowledgeable in jewelry can help me. If I understand it correctly under the new jewelry policy we are to list gold & silver plated jewelry as fine jewelry. I would assume that this would mean only if it is marked 14ktEP or something of this nature and often times costume jewelry is gold or silver plated but not marked accordingly. Up to this point the only jewelry I have listed as fine jewelry is if is 925 silver or 10 or 14 kt gold. I just tried to list something which is definitely costume jewelry by 5th Avenue and a message came up saying I should list it under fine jewelry or change the title. Would appreciate comments from anyone else out there selling jewelry. Thanks for any help.

Always fine myself somewhat confused after eBay decides to make a bunch of changes. Just when I think I know what I am doing.......

What metal and gems did the item have?

I haven't gotten through the whole policy yet and am not totally sure that I understand it all...I know that I don't agree with some of the things that they are doing.

I think that gold and silver plated jewelry are considered fine jewelry (by eBay) in a couple of different situations

 - If the base metal under the plating is considered a precious metal it would be listed under fine jewelry ex. gold plating over sterling silver

 - If the gem stone is considered 'fine' then a silver or gold plated item would be considered fine jewelry

Did you check the policy itself...that might help you.  http://pages.ebay.ca/help/policies/jewelry.html

One thing that I find odd is that they consider a brass item plated gold to be 'fine' How is brass fine in any way?  They also specify that the plated gold be at least 10k. I don't know about you but I have never seen any info or markings for gold or silver plated jewelry telling me how much gold is in the plating.

I know that when I relist some of my items will be considered fine although I consider them fashion jewelry.  I think some of the changes are a mistake.

The selling update board on .com is closed for posting but you might want to read the jewelry threads. They might be helpful.

Re: New Jewelry Policy

Thanks PJ - that is how I understood it too but also don't agree. I think that gold and silver plated should be costume - unless it is sterling that is gold plated. I have a couple of times seen where it says 14KTEP for gold plated but never with silver - in fact I have never seen where it even says silver plated. Don't understand why they are making these changes. A lot of the time we don't really know if it is brass/gold plated. To me just makes for more confusion. Appreciate your comments and will look on .com threads as I do plan to list some of my items on .com and continue with USD funds.

Re: New Jewelry Policy

I agree.  Gold and silver plated should be costume jewelry.

IMO it's a good thing that eBay is making an attempt to organize jewelry listings a little.

I've been buying a few pieces and the search is horrendous.   Impossible to do a search that narrows it down to just the types of items I want.

Re: New Jewelry Policy

Gold plated silver is vermeil, isn't it? I doubt anyone knows the word though.

Somewhat off topic, why is silver plated with rhodium? I guess it is to stop it tarnishing, but then it starts to seem pointless.

At least gold never tarnishes.

Re: New Jewelry Policy

I haven't run into that yet but I haven't listed anything new for a few weeks.

I do remember someone telling me that, in Canada, we cannot use a term like "14k gold plated".  It has to be simply "gold plated".  However, I can't for the life of me remember if it was one of my suppliers that told me or someone on this board.  I am leaning towards the supplier though.  Regulations are different in Canada than in the U.S.

Re: New Jewelry Policy

Silver is plated with rhodium because it won't tarnish.

I met the husband of a gemologist in B.C. a few years ago and he told me that, although it was becoming popular to coat fine metals with rhodium, it posed a problem if someone wanted a ring resized because the rhodium could not be easily removed.
