OMG! a $4,000,000 ring!

For fun i did a search for diamond rings and sorted by highest price - there were several over a million dollars, and this tourmaline ring at $4 million - 201004055978 - will be delivered by armoured courier. I can't believe something like that would be sold on ebay!

Wow, that's some ordinary ring to be listed for $4 million, and by a seller with no more than 1200 FB.  I could see it if this was the Hope Diamond, but tourmaline??

I believe tourmaline is only a semi-precious stone, and far weaker than diamond, so you could conceivably easily scratch or break this $4 million piece.  Even if the size is rare, I can't see that price being realistic.  Even if someone had the money to buy it, how could they be sure they'd actually get it delivered?  And why would a seller like this care after they got their $4 million?  DSRs, claims, negative FB -- meaningless.  I'm not sure why eBay would permit a listing of this value by a seller who is not bonded.  The strangest things happen here...

As I don't have 9999 Feedback yet I shouldn't be posting here.

However I was wondering how exactly the seller would get paid for an item that expensive ?

The listing shows paypal as the only payment method but I thought paypal had a $10,000 limit?

Get a grip folks. That is not really for sale, here. I believe that to be part of multi layered advertising, not only for the product, but for the seller as well.

What does it cost them to list? Nothing? If it costs nothing to advertise, what seller would not take advantage of that?

I used to know a guy with a car lot. He had a Corvette out front. Not that it would sell, but, it drew people onto the lot.

It is called advertising.

I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right!  I used to have a stunning Edwardian wedding gown running for sale in my store for around $800 -- no one apparently could afford it, but I didn't care because it got loads of attention.  I think that one item probably made me dozens of other sales.  Note to self: make another one. ~(:-D

It's the same principle as having those impossibly beautiful and impossibly expensive items in fancy store windows -- lookers become intrigued, walk in and buy something reasonably priced.

And then there is mis reading or misunderstanding a truthful statement.

Somewhat OT but...

Around Y2K, the president of Corel software used to give his employees a huge Christmas party. His (trophy) wife would always wear something 'newsworthy'.

One year it was a black leather catsuit with a large diamond over one nipple.

Yeah. They were a really classy pair.

He remarked that the catsuit was worth a million dollars... and the newspaper reported that it had cost  a million dollars.

But he was right, whatever the price, he got a million dollars worth of publicity from the stunt.

Re: OMG! a $4,000,000 ring!

In my years here I've seen similarly over-priced items listed, and it makes sense that it's for marketing purposes, to draw attention to the seller. I've posted jewellery I've made and so did a bit of eBay research on what other sellers were charging for similar types of items. I saw things listed for many thousands of dollars that I knew weren't worth anywhere near that amount and wondered what the heck the sellers were playing at. I suppose it's not "illegal" to try to get the highest price you can for an item, but it's obviously unscrupulous to list an item at far more than it's actually worth.

I would think that some eBay "police" would take a close look at a $4M ring listing!

Why?

Nothing jumps out as being incorrect in the description.

The price is high, but someone may want to own an item once owned by "Hollywood royalty'.

I notice in the Globe and Mail this morning that an investor has purchased a teacup for $36 million dollars.

And it's not even dishwasher safe.

At least with a ring you could wear it and it is not likely to break if you drop it.

On the other hand, wear a chunk of rock like that and most people will think you bought it at Shopper's Drug Mart, for $12.99.

Yup, that's where I got mine!  Woman Very Happy

I noticed the clip about that teacup on the news last night.  The first thing I thought of when they said it went for $36 million was: why is that guy holding it up in the air between his fingers, waving it around like a $2.00 thrift store find?

Why not? At least eBay allows it because they get huge final value fees!!  That is why eBay allows it.
