i'm selling a $1000 winter coat and thought $30 (according to ebays calculations) would be suffice, the coat is large, but i could fit it into a box 22x18x12 and it weights around 6lbs.
i inputted this information on CP website for a buyer who offfered me full price and it came up as $524 - 3 to 5 days
i did the same thing for UPS and it came up at $1100 - 3-5 business days, signature required
what am i doing wrong here? these shipping costs were the same for another buyer from Russia who also offered me the $1000.
IS International shipping REALLY this expensive, or am i just choosing the wrong criteria in these sites?

yes, canada post is that expensive
it is a lot cheaper if somehow you can ship to to the usa and then ship it out using usps. should cost about ~$100-150 total

It is expensive to send heavy items overseas. Where were you thinking about sending it? It looks like it would be about $450 to Russia as you would have to use Priority but if you were sending it to a country that had xpresspost such as the UK, the cost would be around $250. I haven't used Fed Ex overseas but i to the U.S., it can be less expensive than Canada Post.
I would be uncomfortable about sending an item that expensive overseas. For an item over $250 to have seller protection,Paypal requires that you do get an online signature with delivery but I've heard that can be iffy in some countries If the delivery went fine, then a signature wouldn't matter but if the buyer claimed that they hadn't received the item and there was not an online signature, Paypal would refund the buyer even if tracking showed that they had received it.

Volumetric weight:
Canada Post (L cm x W cm x H cm)/6000 or (L in x W in x H in)/166
FedEx Express & UPS: (L in x W in x H in )/166 (domestic) or /139 (international)
Your 22x18x12 parcel is billed 35lb
It is usually not door to door byt if your buyer is close to a port, you can ship by ocean freight. Port does not have to be physical ocean port but destination for ocean freight companies, for example Toronto has a port even though most imports come by rail. Takes about 1 month across Canada from Toronto by rail and across Pacific by boat and cost is $5-$15 per cubic foot and google says some companies actually allow 1 cubic foot minimum, others allow 1m3 minimum. If receiver self-clears it will go faster through customs, because mail may be sitting in customs for weeks, while freight can be usually cleared within days after landing. Do the research, those rates you are getting for 2.75 ft3 are ridiculous, you can move content of your entire house including furniture across half the planet for around $5-$10k.

A good suggestion for the cost of shipping.
But Surface Shipping is a recipe for financial disaster.
EBay and Paypal only allow 45 days for delivery and require Tracked and Confirmed Delivery, with a Signature Confirmation on items over $250.
Surface shipping can easily take three months. By the time the coat is delivered, the buyer has made an (honest) non-delivery claim and been refunded every penny he paid the seller.

OP - Revise your listing to use Calculated Shipping.
And use metric measurements. Canada Post went metric in 1974 and any other system is at best approximate and often wildly inaccurate.
If you have bids already, contact each bidder and explain that your shipping charges are inaccurate and you have to take down the listing. Then cancel each bidder and end the auction. In that order.
You will lose some of those bidders, but if you don't do this, you will lose , well I was going to say your shirt, but you get the picture.

Is there any particular reason why you don't have a shipping rate for the USA?
If you did not use metric measurements, you may have been caught up in the disconnect between CP and USPS dimensional rates. When you do put in the correct metric measures, go back and add a centimeter to the dimensions, if the US rate does not show up when you check the listing.
Adding this small amount will not change the rates, but will correct for the disconnect.

Yesterday, Mary asked me to look for Maybelline Eye Liner pencils, no longer available in Canadian stores. eBay of course is the best place to start.
We are looking at a few small pencils - no weight at all!
None were located in Canada. Most sellers were in the USA with shipping price all over the place.
The first one I looked at offered "free shipping" to Canada but did not have the shade Mary wanted.
Then I saw many asking $5.95 or so for first class mail.
Then $13.93 using GSP (no additional "import fees" as the item was below $20 value)
Then $10.10 shipping using GSP + $8.01 "import fee" as the value was slightly over $20 for multiple quantity
Finally, a Top Rated Seller had the lowest price for the pencils but wanted $34.95 USPS Priority Mail Express International (no GSP)
Several other listings asked $28.25 USPS Priority Mail International (no GSP)
Conclusion: take your time and check, and check again.

wow, thanks ALL who responded with your suggestions and thoughts - I took some of your advice and did a lot of research!!! i double checked my measurements and negotiated with the buyer regarding the shipping charges.
turns out CP has a priority (tracked) international air parcel rate and it ended up costing $144 but for 6-10 business days. There were other options with quicker service of course, which prices ranged from $539 for 2-3 days - tracked and insured....But luckily i had an understanding Russian customer who's now patiently awaiting his new warm coat!

Pierre: Re Maybelline Eye Liner pencils, I see them advertised at Walmart.ca
If you can't find the one Mary would like, I would be more than happy to buy them for you and forward it to your home.
Warmest regards,

Thank you for your post.
Mary has been all over (including WalMart) to find the shade she had been using. It has in fact been discontinued by Maybelline. She found a few pencils from a distributor of discontinued items in California. Bought them on eBay last week. They are on the way.

Wonderful! Its great that you were able to make Mary's wishes come true. My offer to you stands, anytime.

...well ya know, if you book with Travelocity ca, for a Friday departure & return on Saturday roundtrip Toronto to Moscow would cost $862 (+taxes & fees) ya could wear the coat over & get signature confirmation for free! Probably save a couple bundered bucks over UPS! 🙂

Thank you gifts_of_elegance. Mary's parcel arrived this afternoon (5 business days from California to Eastern Ontario - not bad) and she is delighted to have finally found exactly what she wanted.

Mr Elmwood wrote on Nov 4:
A parcel as big as yours will cost a fortune to mail regardless of what countries you ship to or from.
Not so. Postage for the OP's parcel sent by USPS Priority Mail Express International (estimated delivery time 3-5 days) would be US$74.50.
Moral of the story: never underestimate the extortion practiced by the Canada Post kleptocracy.

One more advise:
you probably do not know yet but each year in the middle of January CP increases their rates - I would recommend to prepare for 10% (hopefully it will be lower)...
If you will be selling in the beginning of 2014 make sure you know the deadline for old rates
