Sales tax audit

Sellers might want to do a quick audit on what ebay is charging customers for tax. Have found 2 recent transactions where the tax rate charged to AB customers was NOT 5 %. Had 1 just today. 12.00 transaction no shipping. Tax charged .86 cents. Only out by 26 cents but in practice it should never be out. 2nd incident it should have been .75. Actual was 1.35. Haven't checked any other provinces....yet. Hopefully it is just a blip but who knows.

Could there be some sort of electronics recycling fee (I assume it's for the calculator)? Or maybe they purchased one of those product protection plans or payment options or something. I have no idea how those show up on the receipts, but I could see something like that happening.

I think we may have a bingo!

The rates vary considerably depending on the product. To complicate matters the recycling fee itself may be subject to GST/HST.

@flipistics No protection plan. Customer just wanted to replace a pc of vintage tech that worked for him. They paid cash at the door based on dollar amount on packslip which did not show any tax.

@recped  Possibly? Shouldn't that be a separate specified line item if it was applicable? As a side the program you are quoting was launched in 2004 and applies to NEW electronics. Calculator sold was manufactured inthe beginning of 2000's. For this particular transaction  customer paid cash. The tax was added to completed transaction/FVF's,  but did not display on the packing slip so no reason to collect from customer.  2nd item in question was a pc of hardware that was picked up but customer paid with Paypal. The tax that was charged did show up as a line item but was not with the correct tax rate being applied.

Maybe it's a new eBay automagical charge for buyers/sellers who chose to pay cash or pick up in person and is whimsically generated by bots? It does seem like they are taking over!!!
