On my Active Listings page there is a "Listing Recommendations" tab that I haven't really noticed before. When I click on the tab it gives me the recommendation to "Add a condition description to help buyers quickly understand exactly what to expect" and gives the sum total of all of my listings.
I already have condition description in every listing. I use SSB and you can't launch a listing from there without checking the box listing the condition.
This has me wondering if it is always "just there" on everyone's selling page or if eBay is somehow not reading the condtion in my descriptions. If not it could have a big effect on placement in search.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Back in the spring, probably before, eBay was touting how best to get moved up in search. Two things were: great pictures and great descriptions.
Pictures would obviously be the up to 12 at the top. I always questioned what "great" description meant. It was a precursor to that description box. eBay is now monitoring that for usage.

Thanks for your answer.
Everything I sell is new. If you did fill in that box where would it appear? I assume above the main description area.

If you specify an Item condition of New, the Condition Description field will be blanked out.
If you specify an Item condition of New Other, then the Condition Description field will be open for use.
A slight difference in the two "New" and "New Other" item condition available to most categories. Because of this, a seller might think New is not working properly for Condition Description in an eBay listing.
All other item conditions (Used, Refurbished, etcetera) allow the Condition Description to be available.
Although the Condition Description allows up to 1,000 characters, limit to 80 characters or so and it will appear at the top of the listing page complete without the More...

I think 'Mr. E.' is correct about the reasons for the notification line about condition -- the same sort of notification showed up a week or so ago on my Summary page. It does relate to the box that specifically sets out "New" or "Used" as the condition of the item -- this policy (requiring condition to be entered in the listing "box") was announced earlier this year I believe.
If you state "Used" in that box, you can and should add brief details, which you'll find will show up at the very top of the listing, above the price area.
However, I now am questioning the secondary purpose of that "helpful" notification. I had 5 or 6 older listings that needed the "Condition" box filled out, which I dutifully revised. I knew I had to do that eventually anyway to comply with the new policy.
Well, apparently that effort of revising did nothing but get me a sudden barrage of attention from eBay (robots, human beings, who knows?) in the form of notifications and warnings concerning other issues that were completely unrelated to item condition. I can't believe that such sudden attention, after months of peace from harangues by eBay, was mere coincidence.
I won't give all the details here, because it's just too complicated a story. Suffice it to say I'm still fighting battles on 2 or 3 fronts as a result of that "attention". These are battles involving absurdities, ignorance and misunderstanding on the part of eBay that I've had to fight before, and have won hands down, although one is a new subject. I am trying not to be angry toward eBay about this, but it's hard not to be. As a rather small "boutique" seller I feel as if I'm getting squashed -- the more I try to comply, the more it seems they find to nit-pick. I do not fit into a "template" as a seller, and I am beginning to think eBay doesn't want my sort of seller anymore.
At any rate, be prepared that if you make the "recommended" revisions, you may also pop up on the radar for other reasons.

You are getting that message because you are using new without tags rather than with tags. I have no idea why they would want a condition for new without tags...new should be new.
For those jewelry items, I usually put new, never used or something along that line. Or if they come with a pouch, new with jewelry pouch.

I can't comment on your situation as I have no idea what happened. I have revised the odd listing and added something in the condition field but for the most part, I just fill it in when I relist the item. I haven't had ebay comment or question me about it so your situation may not be the norm.

Thanks everyone.
I do use New, without tags for all of my listings. I see the open "description" box when I do relists or sell similars but have always ignored it since I have nothing to add that isn't in my main description.
It could be a useful thing, though, if I add something like "jewellery pouch included" as you said, pj. If it shows at the top of the listing it's kind of like highlighting the "added value" the buyer would see with her purchase.
I may try it out on some of the listings, but won't do all at once and attract all of the unwanted attention that you received, rose.

No, these were antique sewing patterns in my own line that happened to be older listings, so didn't have the "Condition" box completed at all. I simply entered "New" for each of them when I did the revisions. "With/without tags' didn't come into it at all.
On all the other (more recent) listings I had already entered the condition in the "box". The with tags/without tags designation only seems to be available in certain categories (such as clothing).
I have no quarrel with eBay's recommendations -- I simply didn't like the fact that my effort at complying led to a bright light being shone on my seller activities for all the wrong reasons.

Be careful when using the item condition description field.
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/policies/selling-practices.html
The item condition description field must only be used to describe the condition of the item. You aren't allowed to use this field for branding, promotions, shipping, returns, payment or other unrelated information.
Adding "jewellery pouch included' to me is not item condition but a promotion in my opinion. How eBay would interpret this I do not know. I would be careful on what you put in there. Because it is so visible at the top of a listing, any possible abuse of this field may result in an eBay policy violation. You might get nailed for multiple policy violations which could result in account restrictions or closure.
I would just leave it blank when New without tags.

One thing about the Item Condition (details) box........
On mobile, buyers will see this box (it's called "seller notes") without having to click through to the full description. So mobile users can instantly see the price, condition, condition details, shipping and the pictures without having to click any further.
For that alone it may be useful to fill in the Condition Details section.
In the Music category at least the Condition Details box shows regardless if the Item Condition field is New, Like New, Used etc. Can't speak to other categories but for most Media new/used is insufficient information on it's own.

I was referring to western's listings as we both sell in the same category. Sorry for the confusion.

I understand what you are saying Poco and I think that is what they said at first. But if they don't expect that box to be filled, why would I have 50+ 'recommendations' to fill in the condition field on listings that are stated as new without tags.
In the November 6th weekly board hour I asked.."what exactly am I supposed to put in the condition description field?"
Raphael's reply - " this field is intended for you to summarize the info you are already putting in your item specifics and/or description. Putting something there will help your sales since it shows up right at the top of your listing (prospective buyers don't have to scroll down to get to it) and is way more prominent than your item specifics and description when someone looks at your listing on a mobile phone."
I'm assuming that he means to summarize the condition...not all of the item specifics. If that's the case, I suppose that adding the pouch would be wrong. The reason that I add the new, never used in that box is to differentiate my items from someone who might use the new without tags for items that they wore once or twice. They aren't supposed to use the word new but that used to be done a lot in the past...I don't know if it is as much of a problem now.

In that case, I think I will just continue to leave it blank.

I've always struggled a bit with how to state the condition of vintage sewing patterns that are obviously not actually brand new, off-the-shelf, but are in virtually new, or "Like New" condition (i.e. the envelope may have some storage wear but the pattern has never been opened or cut and is still as it came from the factory). I'd imagine this probably applies to many of the records you sell too.
I've yet to see the option "Like New" in the category in which I list these -- I wonder why? I'd love to have it available -- it would be one of those little things that make a big difference. With such patterns, I choose "Used" to be safe and add a few words describing the actual condition.

What I take from Raphael's explanation (and from recped's comment) is that sellers might as well make use of the condition details even if that box seems a duplication, since it gets displayed prominently and gives you a place to expand on the condition description.
If it's any help, for reference I've pulled the relevant definitions off eBay's "condition" link:
New with tags
A brand-new, unused, and unworn item (including handmade items) in the original packaging (such as the original box or bag) and/or with the original tags attached.
New without tags
A brand-new, unused, and unworn item (including handmade items) that is not in original packaging or may be missing original packaging materials (such as the original box or bag). The original tags may not be attached.
So for example, even if an item is stated as "New with Tags" in the drop-down box, it could be described by the seller in the condition line as "Brand new, never used, perfect condition, manufacturer's tags still attached", or similar wording - whatever is applicable. In the case of an article of jewellery, if it came from the manufacturer in a pouch, I don't see how saying "in original manufacturer's pouch" would be a problem, if you consider it as part of the packaging (as stated in the definition above), unless the pouch were not in fact original to the piece. But then I'm not the eBay police either.
I get the impression from Raphael's comments that the drop-down box choice that a seller makes when listing an item is distinct (in some way that eBay hasn't made clear), from the longer condition description that can be typed in by the seller. In other words, the two aren't mutually exclusive and may serve quite different search/viewing purposes. A guess on my part, but it would make sense based on Raphael's responses.
