Shipping expensive collectible banknote to the USA. Anyone experienced in this.

Wondering if anyone has experience in this and what to expect regarding clearing customes and particularly if the value of the item(s) goes past the $800 personal duty free amount? These would be PMG graded bills (basically certified bills encapsulated in plastic) by the way.

So far I have figured out the HS code is DIFFERENT than for coins and is 49070030, but not clear answer yet on what the receiver in the US would expect to pay in terms of duties or tarrifs.  Anyone know?   I found this site, that seems to imply there is NO duty or tariff, but it is not exactly a user friendly table.  https://hts.usitc.gov/search?query=banknotes

I found this other HS code that seems a better fit  " 9705.29.00.00
Collections and collectors’ pieces of numismatic interest" ( and I verified numismatic includes paper money).   Now if I read this right, there are no tarrifs on these according to https://www.flexport.com/data/hs-code/9705-collections-and-collectors-pieces-of-archaeological-ethno...

Also is there any difference if I would be doing this through eBay or not, as long as I use the right HS code and declare the value ?

Good point and due to the average value of their items @treadstone68 may want to add the standard buyer's notice about customs duty and fees being the buyer responsibilty to the listings to avoid surprises.

Hardly neccessary, eBay warns buyers about this on the listing itself.

Your listing:

Sorry I can't agree. It's aways been necessary to the point of being recommended on eBay's podcast.  to the best of my knowledge the standard buyer's notice you quoted is not on the eBay app just the destop version.

If the transaction has subsequent problems such as unexpected additional duties or fees the buyer will complain to the seller. It's up to the seller to satisfy the buyer.  eBay is not going to run your store for you.

The seller can't very well say, "Oh you would have seen the warning if you had bought the widget on a desktop computer. " It takes up almost no space in a listing and then there is no difference if they use a cell phone which I believe is used 65% of the time these days.

I can’t speak to the Android version of the app, but the disclaimer is definitely present on listings when using the iOS version.

@marnotom!

Youre right. My mistake. I had looked at a domestic item. The comment does appear on android when the widget is in a foreign country.

Just the same Ill keep it in my listing rather than rely on ebay to get the point across. Most of my sales are cross border and not one problem with this issue in 13 years.

If it aint broke dont fix it

  I use templates for all my listings so it gets added automatically.

@marnotom!

Thanks for the kudos.  I'm confused when my fellow sellers including you  conceal their stores when the rest of us select "VIEW LISTINGS". We do that to asertain whether the poster's contribution has merit to our own situation. Releveance to our posts for help from conributors is very important.

  When the advanced Canadian (dot ca) "boardies" choose to block our forum from viewing their listings questions abound.   Part of being included in a forum is sharing.

   I encourage all eBayers to share, but only to their points of comfort.

Here is why I'm surprised to find tinight you "kudoed" my comment.

 After i researched your interuptions and critisisms of my posts on the open eBay profile I noticed you are continuously active albeit there were only TWO Canadian sellers you clicked "HELPFUL" to their posts.  That being said you applied pleantiful  "HELPFULS" to countless sellers on eBay dot com.  Why only two Helpfuls to eBay Canada posaters and the same two repeatededly which is why I'm thankful you gave me a Kudo today.

Thanks!

  My guess (as you hide your account) that you don't sell on eBay Canada but you sell on eBay United States. I don't have a problem with that as many do. ITWM Helpful Given.JPG

Here are yours. Two Helpfuls to two Canadian sellers.

   Please give credit to Canadians where credit is due.  As you hide your listings here are your recent "helpfuls" given and then here are mine.  It would be great if your critisisms were directed to the side you sell on like your "Helpfuls" seem to be. Helpful given.JPG

I'm glad you're taking the apology I posted in the Germany thread so gracefully.
