Tarriffs Shipping to USA from Canada

Its been a while since i last mailed a parcel containing hockey cards to USA from Canada using Chichats and had been told back in February as long as item/s is under $800.00 and on the menefest provide description, declared value, where it was made, and the HS CODE all be good.

Unfortunately today i sent a similar patcel only to be told it dont matter what the value is, it must now be opened by both Carrier to inspect the item/s that it clearly says where its made. Even after the carrier sees its all info is correct and item/s can be sent with no tarriffs. It will most likely be opened up again by customs to be searched.

Has any one else come across this using Ebay lables and say sending with Canada Post or other carrier.

Im also concerned now with having carrier open package to inspect and they place stickers displaying where item/s was manufactured in. Then if customs opens it up and something goes missing after or damaged and buyer receives and files wiith Ebay then think we are just opening up cans of worms, and big headaches disappointments after in sorting issue with carrier ebay buyer.

My only option at this point would be is not to ship to USA until the Tarrifs issues have been resolved with.

Do you have the option of using Stallion Express to ship your item?

They do compliance checks, and I don't know if my packages were inspected by either them or Customs, but I did get some tips from them to get the package across trouble-free (provided the goods aren't from China).

So declare your item very well with lots of detail in the description on what it is. Stallion says to include documentation to substantiate country of origin if it's not printed on the actual item (they suggested the auction listing stating what I'm selling as a suggestion, or documentation online from a reliable source, like a catalogue).

In the case of multiple items, you could make a spreadsheet with a list of your items and include it in the box, then the buyer can check what he received as well.

This doesn't mean your shipment will get over without problems, but these are suggestions Stallion made to have things go a little easier at the border. They are doing compliance checks but I don't think they're opening every package. I've also been told Customs has a good idea of where a lot of things are made, so something that's typically not from China won't get the same scrutiny as something that's often made in China (but declared with a different country of origin).

If your package goes Canada Post, they can still open it and inspect it. There's no way to avoid having it inspected if Customs is determined to examine your items.

Any customs official can open your package if they want to. There's really no way to prevent this.

At the moment, there is an increased likelihood that your package will be opened at the border if using a CBS because they're spot-checking parcels on the manifest to ensure compliance. For postal imports through Canada Post, it is less likely that your parcel will be scrutinized due to the volume they have to deal with (unless something on the declaration gives them pause, or the item is particularly valuable or something).
