The Free Shipping Challenge for Canadian Sellers

From today's Toronto Star:

When Walmart Canada introduced free shipping on all online purchases last year, it was a clear message to its rivals that it was gearing up for a fight.

Craig Patterson, an analyst who runs the online news magazine Retail Insider, said the move by one of the world’s largest retailers was bold, setting a new standard in going the extra mile for consumer dollars.

“This means war. It’s a declaration of war, no question,” he said from Vancouver.

For the last few years, a battle has been waging among retailers trying to set themselves apart, as entrants such as U.S. giants Target and Nordstrom arrive to compete for the same customers.

“What this comes down to is building trust with the customer,” said Patterson. “Walmart knows that if they offer free shipping, they are coming out punching. When someone like Walmart does it, there is going to be scramble from other retailers to see how they can compete either by adding extra value, better customer service.”

While a behemoth retailer like Walmart may be able to absorb the costs of shipping, it would be a challenging task for smaller retailers to offer the same without raising prices, he said.

Re: The Free Shipping Challenge for Canadian Sellers

Some things are just not meant to be sold on eBay or online.

Totally agree mr.elmwood. I think that comment stands for anytime and anywhere.

But Im not talking about items that probably have no market anywhere. Im talking about the sellers that only years ago where bathing is sales only to be now cut short with all types and calls of reasoning why they are not making it today.

An earlier post said that by getting better pictures and discription sales could improve. Well even though I have made a very good living years back with what I have had, I still went ahead and tried to improve my listing. Gave me something to do , but didnt help in sales ( this earlier post was not from you so dont think I am harping on you as I do respect your comments).

Unfortunately for many who made good money years back, lowering prices and giving free shipping is a struggle and possibly the last straw.

As for me? I cant continue like this. I do fortunately have the luxury to wait it out for awhile, but only for awhile. After that I will be one of those that will have to make a choice

I don't see any prices increased inside because I ordered photos online and see the same usual prices with free shipping, so it is actual free shipping.
