USPS Delivered to Wrong Address. - Reshipping?

I just learned that USPS delivered an item to an address that was not on the Canada Post shipping label with the barcode.  I did make an error and had the wrong address on the box, so they took the address on the box instead of the label.

I don't think it should matter, since the label with the barcode should be used for the shipment.

Couple of questions.  Has anyone seen anything similar before?  The person who received the shipment is willing to drop the box off for reshipment, so that is great.  Just wondering how to proceed.

I am thinking of calling USPS to see if they will reship for no charge, as IMHO it is their error.   If it is a no, I will buy a label on .com since it is shipping inside the US.

I could ask the person to bring it in and ask USPS about reshipping it, but also provide a label so that they have it on them it I have to pay for the reship.   I prefer not to push the goodwill to far though!

Thoughts appreciated.

Hi, I had exactly the same situation. Two packages with mixed up shipping labels and address labels. The buyers / recipients cooperated and shipped the items to each other. I refunded both buyers (item + shipping), and they purchased the postage on their own.

Taking a decision you should decide, what's more important: money of your business' reputation.

I choose the latter.

I learned my lesson: I do not work with more than ONE order at a time anymore.

You are the one that put the wrong address on the parcel ... AND DID NOT CORRECT IT.

" I did make an error and had the wrong address on the box, so they took the address on the box instead of the label. "

The Post carrier has no definitive way of knowing which address is correct although logic would say the label should be the correct one.

"I am thinking of calling USPS to see if they will reship for no charge, as IMHO it is their error. "

Sorry but NO, the error is yours...

To follow-up.   The box had a bar coded Canada Post label with the correct address, and a generic label with the incorrect address only.   It was not a carrier issue, the correct address was to California and it was delivered to Oregon, so somewhere in the distribution system things went sideways.

I called USPS and the agent said that the address would have been taken from the barcode scan and they did not understand what would have happened.  i.e. processing is from the bar code scan, not the written address.   They instructed me to have the incorrect recipient to bring it to the USPS office, show them that the postal label has the correct address on it and it will be forwarded for no charge.

USPS Delivered to Wrong Address. - Reshipping?

this happened to me in June.  customer was in Seattle and after it got to LA it went to Portland OR, then Seattle, then it cycled between Seattle and Portland OR a few times before being **inexplicably** delivered to some address in Portland lol.  Label had the Seattle address on it, it had to have come from the barcode, some eff up somewhere.  Customer and I were both **bleep**.  Customer shared with me he made some claim thru USPS to be refunded for the shipping/item cost due to their error, I wasnt aware they could do this.   Customer also said USPS could not tell them where in Portland the item was delivered to, they had no idea apparently.  It was probably some encoding error within the barcode.

On a somewhat related note I've noticed purchasing labels for shipments to the UK and Australia it adds a tracking number for the item even when I've purchased a label for regular airmail no tracking.   Whenever I ship to these places now I have to send disclaimer messages to customers to let them know as I started getting confused messages from folks wondering why there was an error message when they double clicked on the item tracking number.   The genesis of the tracking number is unknown, it looks like it was randomly generated.
