Verify your information to continue selling, things that make you go hmmmmm

Wow what a day.

A wee bit ago I got two of these messages, one for phone number and email address and one for uploading documents again. (Part of me wonders if this is why I got the spontaneous "bot hold" in the other thread, but that was 2 days ago).

So I scanned my drivers license, sent it up, all was good.

15 minutes later the message is back again.

I figured the scan wasn't good enough, it was pretty small so I took pictures instead and sent them up, all was good.

15 minutes later the message is back again.

Arrgghh. So off to call my favourite CSRs again, they patched me through to the Managed Payments folks.

The problem apparently was that my drivers licence has my full first and middle name, whilst my eBay id only had my normally used first name and middle initial, so all I had to do was update that on my account.

This is where the HMMMM comes in. Whilst I was on hold while the MP fellow did his stuff, I confirmed my name on my bank account was the same as it USED to be on eBay and it doesn't match the full name on the eBay account now.

Two times I advised the fellow that I thought this would zap the MP payments, both times he assured me it would not because it was already verified and it would always stay that way. Despite that assurance, I'm staying in HMMMM phase until I see what happens tomorrow, that's my normal pay out day.

Time will tell.

Well there's already another Hmmmm.

I still have the red banner, he said that would go away and it has not.

I think I'm going to wait until I see what happens with the bank transfer tomorrow, and then I can cover both problems at the same time. I very much expect it is not going to work.

It says I have until February 4th to update so there's lots of time......

Incredible.

You've had an ebay account for 23 years, have 17,300+ positive ratings ... and ebay has suddently decided to withhold your payments???  and require you to submit new documents proving your identity???

Brings to mind the last lines of the Galaxy song in the Pythons' Meaning of Life ...

"And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth"

Nothing new. Posted a similar problem here a few days ago (I also sell here since 22 years / 20K items sold). They asked to send them my DL, too. Here is the post: https://community.ebay.ca/t5/Seller-Central/You-need-to-update-your-account-details-by-Jan-31-2023-o...

Oh **bleep**, what a twisted tale. Surely those folks cannot hope to be taken seriously?

Yep this morning  under payments I see "You have no upcoming payouts" with a nice red exclamation mark by it.

Sigh.

I'll have to call it in later today to see if I can get it going again.

The bank account is linked to a number of other things and I'm thinking that it is going to probably be easier to set up a simplii account just for ebay.

Time will tell!!!

Hoping to see a good news follow up, this is just awful to know long time sellers are going through this. Fingers crossed it's settled soon and we don't all have to travel this messy road.

Hmmm ing continues.

I called in this morning, I'm told the reason that today's payout is on hold is because the scans I sent in last night of my license weren't good enough.

Oddly I sent in scans, assumed they weren't good enough when they failed then I sent pictures. Today I'm told I need to send in pictures (which I actually did but they weren't great pictures). I took better pictures than the ones last night and sent them in again.

Red bar's gone, still no payout scheduled though.

Based on past experience it will be a while before I know if it "took" this time or not.

If the pictures take, I still have great doubts that the payout will work, today's fellow told me the only problem was the id "scans", and the payout timing for this week I believe is past.

Time will tell....

Hi @ricarmic

It's annoying for sure and probably due to the increase of internet crime. I used to be put off by verifications but now I do what they say. I had this same problem with GoDaddy. After years of owning trouble free web sites they asked me to verify my age old account with a picture of  my drivers license.

They didn't just ask for the license but a photo of ME holding the license by my face. I thought it was ridiculous.  the mail seemed ligit so I sent it in low resolution. They came back and wanted a high res copy. When that happened I questioned if it was actually GoDaddy so I got on the phone.  I researched the problems with crime going on and things were much worse than before. I sent a slightly higher res copy and I  applied all the security I could including 2 step verification.

Never heard from them again.  Not sure if this has anything to do with your issue but if it's eBay tightening up security I would do what they ask.

IT

PS Here's to better days ahead!

Only a minor update today, the next scheduled payout got automagically reset to next Tuesday now (I've set mine to weekly), so that is somewhat positive progress.

I will still be VERY surprised if I am not updating next Tues/Wed that it didn't go through, although both CSRs were adamant that everything was good banking wise (despite the names being different).

Now I have to go into "patience mode" till next Tuesday.

Hmmm, tempting to change it to daily and see if it goes right away... but I would not throw anything new at the system right now!

Let's see, you sell stamps and your scans and pictures of a DL were not good enough!!!  Of course, you know nothing about taking pictures of small items where detail is important.   Sure smells like good old fashion handy excuse to me.

@byto253 well, I think I'll take some blame for the scans part. I never use scans for selling, main printer wasn't reachable for some reason (it was just one of those days) so I scanned on the other. Scan was "small" but I thought they could expand it like I did to see detail.

I did take passable pictures for the 2nd attempt, but they were "shop pictures" so weren't great, my "real" pictures are all taken via natural light. That part is moot because the CSR said they only got the "first" ones I sent, ie the scans.

I hear you on the daily but as you suggest, the LAST thing I want to do is put more options for making the problems worse. In the "paypal" days I used to only send myself a paycheque once a month or so, so this will likely end up being like the good old days. I can't imagine it is going to work on Tuesday but time will tell!

I really would be interested in hearing from a legal beagle knowledgable in this area on how long eBay can hold up payments.  Early in MP days we heard about a few months, or account problems and payments not made and people panicking as there were a few thousand dollars held up.

Legally eBay is holding funds in trust, it is the sellers money.  Issues like holding it until a newbies shipment is confirmed or 30 days passes is reasonable but for some situations it was a long time.  Legally there is a fiduciary duty for eBay to get funds to folks after to long has passed.  The payment method is their creation and under their administration, so the onus is on them, you can't hold on to trust funds forever.  It may even take cutting an old fashioned cheque if someone is leaving eBay.

But I don't know what the legal time line is for this kind of thing.

At this point it is just the largest of the current frustrations here. So far I've got work arounds for all the others, may not need one for this time will tell.

I've been around long enough and on enough sites to learn that they ALL have problems.

I've got work arounds on all sites, it is actually getting kind of hard to remember what all I have to do on each site to keep everything working the way it should, but then again I'm not getting any younger 😉

Re: Hmmmm zone

There are US sellers (found 1 who posted on dot com), seller since 2000 with 43,000+ feedbacks,  which includes 1 neutral was asked to only confirm phone and email address then all was golden. Nothing about drivers, next of kin, 3rd ex wifes maiden name and belt size. From reviewing the post it seems to be luck of draw what is required. Like going through customs at the airport.

Let's get you back on track. We need to verify your eBay account's phone and email.

Keeping this information updated helps eBay create a safe marketplace. Please verify your phone and email by Jan 23, 2023 to continue receiving payouts.

It's what I got. "LET'S GET YOU BACK ON TRACK".

Seriously? I am NOT ON TRACK NOW? Miss I something?

All that mess disappeared about 2 minutes after I unploaded my DL, and went back to normal ("back on track?").

@38e_avenue

If this is some kind of system wide campaign to verify sellers are who they say they are about something officially from eBay? From the flipside of the coin maybe a  little bit better verification of buyers is in order. Hey, just saying!! How many times have we tried to get a hold of a customer for 1 reason or another and get not in service!!

-Lotz

PS. For anyone is nervous about security with all the current scams out there I know I would be nervous submitting anything like what is being requested.

Re: Feb 01, 2023 Release of funds. Sounds like a bit of a waiting period to have funds held!!!

Have not read any DOTcom threads for ages, that said being asked for phone and email verification is more in line with ebay keeping selling accounts secure rather than payment accounts. I'm often prompted to verify phone and email for my selling account, maybe once or twice yearly I comply and verify them, usually don't take the time though.

From my selective past memory I personally don't recall that ever happening to me. Unless any message like that went to spam and I never saw. As a buyer I've never been asked for reverification. Wonder if a buyer who hasn't bought in years gets the same water torture treatment? Probably not!!
