When you screw up a listing and think you are having a bad day...

Monoprice just had a bunch of items on their store revert to $2.49 pricing. Needless to say they have sold thousands of units of cpus/ssds and other items in the last short while. Now I don't feel so bad about my last listing error.

When you screw up a listing and think you are having a bad day...

One of the big players in my Category (a retail chain) with an ebay presence had a major mix-up about 18 months ago where on Markdown Manager, they reduced their Dollar price by $50 instead of $5 or maybe it was 50 per cent off instead of $50 off. There were pages of the same kind of Negative feedback from buyers about it for Cancelled Orders and then one day shortly afterwards, all those Negs vanished into thin air.

So, yeah, doublecheck that per cent reduction versus dollar reduction before you Create Sale. I doubt the so-called Feedback Specialists at ebay would take pity on me and remove 40 Negative Feedbacks over a week-long period from the same kind of mistake.

After enjoying a moment of schadenfreude, I can understand how the company was able to get all those negs removed, since the error was (at least in part) eBay's.

And I would guess the company is also a PowerSeller with the 7 day delay on Disputes, however that works.

Good point to reinforce about checking the percent vs dollar amount, I can see how one could make that error if in autopilot mode. I've seen quite a few disasters having worked in ecommerce, usually involving rebate/discount fields and someone assuming they should enter the intended sale price into that field. It can be a bit of a minefield for dropshippers as well as I've seen instances where a distributor goofs on their rebates or makes an unannounced changed to the mapping of pricing related data fields resulting in websites across the country publishing price errors. My hat goes off to the customer service people who end up having to deal with and clean up the aftermath as dealing with price errors can be toxic.

Thankfully I've only had a few rare instances of a pricing error on ebay, typically a result of the sell similar feature and the pricing field not fully updating before submitting the listing. I find that having email open while listing a batch of listings helps as you can do a quick bulk double check before the site starts indexing the listing.

FWIW... The Monoprice pricing errors appeared to follow the approximate shipping cost for each mispriced item. CPUs were much less than monitors, and monitors were less than a PC box. Apparently somehow only the approximate shipping charge became the price of the items (all with free shipping).

I have screwed up my own Markdowns. I recently sold a rare diecast for 50 per less when it should have been five per cent reduced. With Free Shipping no less. I took a deep breath when I discovered my mistake and shipped it like I would have any other transaction. It comes down to what matters more to you as a seller: honour or profit.

I think we have all been there and done that.

What bothers me the most is not that a mistake is made but that there are a lot of buyers looking for errors like this that just don't have the decency to let you know about the error.

I know, I know, their gain and your pain!

Sounds like they borked their csv file when updating via file exchange.

Deal sites have unfortunately turned people a bit cynical in this regard. I don't mind if a buyer places an order knowing it will likely be cancelled, but the ones who throw a hissy fit and feel like they should be entitled something can grind the gears a bit.

What annoys me is when a seller takes my money and then decides the order is invalid. That does not happen when we are face-to-face.

As of less than one hour ago, another eBay store was hit by the same type of pricing errors. Not big as Monoprice, but they have I guess at least a dozen of the high end CPUs in stock. Other items like monitors are also affected, with a corresponding higher cost, like $25. The high-end CPU cost is about $15-$20, much more than actual shipping but apparently that is it. I have not bothered looking at other items.

If it is hacking, I wonder why. Or is this not unusual for eBay sellers to make such mistakes frequently?
