How do I add an avatar to my account?

I believe that adding or changing a profile picture must be done using a desktop browser (or possibly a mobile browser requesting the desktop site version of the page) by going to your profile page by clicking on your username as it appears on one of your My eBay pages, using the "edit profile" button and then selecting the little pen icon that appears on the profile picture.

I believe that your new icon should appear on the discussion boards once you have signed out and signed back in to the community pages after making a change.
