Finally got an email with promo fine print:

"Invited sellers who activate the offer, list in the auction-style, auction-style with the Buy It Now feature added, or fixed price formats (including Good ‘Til Cancelled listings), with any listing duration, during the Promotion Period, will receive a 50% discount on final value fees (collectively referred to as "Promotion") for the first 10 items sold."......

Oh, please. List and sold. I have 1120 items listed at the moment and none sitting on my desk waiting for only a sweet promo like this. As if I would be just sitting on a hot hot hot item left unlisted in case some promo came along.

I'm not going to waste time trying to strategically plan to use a promo like this, all my items are listed that are going to be listed. Thanks to the watermark controversy, I'm 250 items across a dozen new product lines behind in ebay listings but it's not like I'm going to shut down my store and stop dispatching toy orders at Christmas to try to take advantage of something like this.

Good luck to those of you who can make it work. I can't fart around with a promo like this, every second I spent typing here is time I should be otherwise packing orders for same-day dispatch before my postal counter closes.

If you have some higher priced items without any recent selling history you could end those and then relist or use sell similar. I'm sure that those would be considered as being relisted within the promotion period. If you sell any of them you could save a few dollars.

Items have to be LISTED during the promo, they have to sell at some point which for a Fixed Price listing could be up to 30 days, for an Auction up to 10 days.

I've always understood these fvf promotions to work in that same way....list during the promotion period and receive the fvf discount if they sell throughout the length of the listing. But just now when I looked at promo in my messages, on the graphic part it states

Sell by December 12
Applies to first 10 sales

I wonder if that is a typo...I know that we have to list by Dec. 12 but sell by that date too???? That isn't the norm as far as I know.

Yes, that might work for another seller but any of my higher-priced items also have 20+ Watchers that I'd lose if I did that. Of course, we all know watchers aren't necessarily buyers and it might be good to put the fear into them..... However, it've had 50 auctions end and relist automatically since yesterday morning and those have already taken my place in the promo. It's not an easy promo to use. A seller would have to be just sitting on a goldmine of hot, high-priced items sure to sell. And have let them sit unlisted. And haven't any GTCs renewing to take the place of the ones they might want to use. I really have to stand by my earlier assertion it's not a promo that's really any good to me.

@esclyons wrote:

so to clarify, it says for 5 days "only", so does that mean the items you list in the window apply to the first 10 that sell.., or only to items you list that sell in the 5 day window..

for example if i list 30 items today after activating the offer, and they are 30 day auctions, are the first 10 covered in this deal until 30 days expire..

If you list 30 in the time period the first 10 of those that sell get the discount. Even if it takes until January 12.

The listing time limit is until December 12.

The selling time limit is when the last of the listings expire or there are 10 sales of eligible listings (which ever comes first).

Sorry to be so late to this thread everyone -

I do want to confirm that this promotion was only for items newly listed and sold within the time frame.

I know the terms and conditions were confusing on this point, and I have given this feedback to the proper teams so we can set much clearer expectations in the future.

Thanks!

Within what time frame?  It doesn't make sense that they have to be listed and sold within a few days which is what the graphic suggests. I'm sure that with other similar promotions the items had to be listed within that time frame and then sold before that item was ended or before it was relisted.

If the sale had to be within the promo period why were Auction listings included? Given the normal duration for Auctions is 7 days even if they were listed on day 1 of the window they would end outside the window.

That makes no sense at all!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a Fixed Price listing that was started on the evening of the 12th....would it really need to sell in a matter of a couple of hours to qualify? In many cases that listing would not even be indexed in Search.

Within the time frame of the promotion, by the 12th.

I realize how limiting that is - and have included many of the comments here in my feedback to the marketing team specifically.

Thanks for the input @recped - I agree that it is a promotion that was not as helpful as it originally sounded, and that the wording was vague. Hoping to see something better in the future!

This was a totally ridiculous and totally useless promo then. A promo like this doesn't make sense at all.

So it seems that I did, in fact, read it correctly: listed and sold. By sheer coincidence due to my GTCs renewing themselves during that time period, I did actually have one item selling for $90+ CAD that fell into the terms of the promo through no design of mine. Lucky me. It wasn't a total loss.

Oh, and here. I'll just throw some more fuel on the fire. I got this to the ebay.com account I use to buy. Never sold anything from it.

If I've said it once, I've sent it a hundred times: it's ill-advised to throw promos like this at users who've no idea how to sell anything  on the site because all ebay is going to do is drag unlikely/unwilling/untrained sellers to the table to screw up buyer experiences at a critical time like Christmas.

eBay.CA promo: Save 50% on final value fees for up to 10 sales.

This ebay.com promo applies only to high-ticket items, I might add. A hundred dollars of more each. In the last week to shop before Christmas. And it's being sent to users who've never sold anything on ebay.

How is it blatantly obvious to only people like me that this is a terrible, terrible idea from a buyer perspective, both in the short-term and the long-term? If the team tasked with recruitment manages to get ten new sellers to the table and nine of those transactions end in some form of disaster or disappointment for the buyer, is this considered a win or a loss for ebay? Short-term win, long-term loss?

Brand new sellers make a dozen mistakes in their first dozen transactions. I did, and I'm among the most overly-serious and **bleep**-retentive sellers that I know. Right from the start. I made a dozen mistakes with my first dozen orders and that was with me TRYING my hardest not to make any mistakes. Promos like the one above only rope in would-be sellers who most likely don't care about selling here. Ebay should be catering to the sellers already here who actually try to make it all work.

Can you dig up the fine print for this Max $10 offer? Interested to see if it's as vague as the 50% deal.

Oh by the way.....you were the one that read the offer as meaning listed AND sold in the period....sorry I doubted you!
