sales down for febuary

is anyone else notice sale down in febuary, dec and jan were awesome months but this month im at 25 percent,i do know that the lack of free listings is part of the problem,so i opened a store so i could save money on listing prices, although i havent quite figured out many things as far as how to take 10 percent off and such and a lot more things you can do like categorize items, but even with all my listings i am still mainly having watchers,is it just slow for this time of year?I do list in us dollars but take into account the dollar difference, for example if i start an auction at 7.99 it is the same as if i started it at 10.99 canadian, same with shipping tracked,to the us is a minumum of 12.00 us to arrive at 15.00 can dollars, taking in the charge by ebay of 10 percent,it would be nice if ebay wasnt so greedy as to charge on the shipping,i would be able to reduce shipping,by 10 per cent?I do notice that a lot of sellers sell with shipping inc. in the price but that seems too phoney,??? like ive tried that a couple times but just dont feel right about asking say 25.00 for a 10.00 dollar item???

Re: sales down for febuary

A couple months ago I had a lot of problems with packages that I sent outside Canada that the buyers claimed they weren't receiving. (By "packages" I mean stuff I printed paypal shipping/customs labels for.) I used to be quite active on another buying/selling/trading site a few years ago and when I used to fill out customs forms then by hand, it was good enough to put something vague like "video game" so that's what I kept doing, and I rarely had problems. But then, like I said, I had those problems recently. After browsing Canada Post's website, I discovered that they actually want you to be really specific when filling out the customs form. The example they give is instead of "clothes" put "100% cotton men's t-shirt". So once I started giving specific info on the customs forms (leaving the autocompleted description there when there was one) I stopped having problems.

Thanks for the useful tip.

The PP shipping label picks up the eBay title for the customs declaration, but it is quite possible to change this.

Re: sales down for febuary

It is not necessary to be really specific in your descriptions.  Canada Post requires specifics from you in order to provide the correct HS Code, not for labelling purposes.  It appears you sell video games, for which there are only 3 codes, depending on whether they are played on a television receiver, an arcade game, or other.  So the description "video game" is all that is needed, along with the correct 6-digit code. Those first six digits of the HS Code provide the detailed description to the Customs Department, which speeds up clearance.

For those reading this who sell other items, keeping the written description vague - eg "Clothing" or "Worn Clothing" helps to reduce the chances that:

1) the item is targeted by mail thieves (Apple iPhone - target, used electronics - not so much) and

2) the buyer is embarassed by the detailed description if, for example, the item is going to their work address, or the mail deliverer is a friend or acquaintance (eg: worn girdle or silk nightgown going to a male buyer), or the item is to be a gift to someone within the household.

When the HS Code requirement first started, I was more specific with my description, but began using vague descriptions within a few months, and have never had a problem with either reasonable delivery times or item not received due to item descriptions.

In most developed countries, only if an officer is suspicious (and has time) will Customs take a closer look at the description, and consider examination.

There were quite a number of posts here from Canadian sellers who reported items not getting delivered in December and January, so perhaps volume, Xmas thefts, weather delays, etc contributed to that.  You are selling to a high fraud demographic, and worldwide, so it's possible some of your buyers took advantage of the lack of tracking to have a free game or card.

By the way, you might want to review your shipping options.  As an example, there is no Tracked Packet service to Costa Rica or the Gabon Republic.

Re: sales down for febuary

I've always been fairly unspecific with the description part of the customs form and haven't had a problem with that. I do use the HS code now as well although someone posted that it was no longer required but I have no idea if that is true. Even if it is, I would rather be more specific with the HS code and less so with the written description.

Re: sales down for febuary

Technically it is not currently required for Light and Small Packets; however, that will change in the future, and PB has anticipated that by requiring it on PayPal labels.  From a practical point of view, when you add the HS Code on a CN22 form, even if you are sending a Light Packet with postage stamps, Customs will know you are an online seller, appreciate that you have done some work for them, and send your package on quickly.

If the package size or weight seems oddly out-of-place with what you have declared, or the dog sniffs something - that is a different story.  Also for those countries where corruption is rife and/or the postal service is notoriously poor - those packages will proceed on their own twisted course no matter what is declared.

Re: sales down for febuary

When they first started requiring it on paypal shipping you couldn't go to the next page for a light or small packet label unless you entered the code.  Has that changed now?

Being specific with both the HS code and the description (in as much as it accurately describes the category of item) is recommended. Having dealt with customs on both sides of the borders regularly as a shipper as well as a commercial importer, having the specificity in the description is a help to them when the interpretation of the HS code and the item description comes up, which it does at times as agents have differing opinions/interpretations at times. Both are looked at.

Changed quite a while ago, You can tab right past it. For everything I sell. I only utilize two codes anyway.

Lately, the form is not pre-filled, on the second page. This is handy for my "other than first world" customers as I can be creative in what I say. This has made a difference in parts getting through Customs, so far.

I am on a 14 month run of booming sales.

Re: sales down for febuary

The category is generally accurate but I would write wallet, not Coach leather wallet. Although for jewelry, I put fashion accessory as I am uncomfortable telling anyone who handles the package that their is jewelry in the package. The customs officer will know it is jewelry by the HS code.  Some sellers leave the full ebay title on the customs form which seems silly and isn't necessary.

Re: sales down for febuary

I guess I haven't tried to skip putting in the code in a long time. It's easy enough to fill in anyway.

The form is still pre-filled for me as I print a label directly through Paypal, not eBay but it's easy to erase what they have filled in and replace it with a shorter description.

That would be fine, you don't have to be specific down to the brand or any specific details of the item, just as long as it is relevant to the category of product indicated by the HS code and the contents. Where most people run afoul is writing generic descriptions like "used goods" or such that end up causing confusion. Details are best left to an invoice, which you can include in the case of a more sensitive shipment.
