A Blast From the Past, worth Re-viewing Now

Good evening, roughly I year ago, when we first heard about DSR's(but had no idea yet what Ebay was up to) I posted some advice on how to keep those DSR's up. I was roundly and soundly criticized by one and all.

However my yearly DSR's are 4.9 4.9 4.8 4.7

My latest monthly DSR's are 4.9 4.9 4.9 4.8

I live in Canada just like many other powersellers about to lose their designation. Maybe the advice is worth a second look now?? It worked a year ago, it works now. My listings are Raised in search, I get the 15% discount, I remain a powerseller. If I could figure out how to do this you can too by following the advice below.

From May 2007:

Hello. Well I am not worried about the new feedback system. The reason for that is that I take simple precautions against my customers becoming unnecessarily upset:

2)I use Paypal Shipping Labels. When I do that, my customer gets an email from Paypal, letting the customer know the shipping label has been printed. When I select the shipping service, it give me an estimate of the number of business days it takes for delivery. In the space where I can leave a note for the buyer, I tell my American Customers to expect delivery in DOUBLE the amount of time paypal estimates, Because it has to come across an internatinal border.

3) I quote my customers(pricewise) for AIR PARCEL rates, However, I give them a Surface delivery estimate of delivery time. For example, I tell them it will take 11-21 business days surface, but charge them the AIR rate and then I mail it AIR. They sure are happy when they get it in 3 -5 days. SURPRISE!! Read our feedback about our super fast service!! LOL I have not gotten bad feedback because of slow delivery in 18 months.

4) I answer all emails from customers wanting to know the status of their delivery. Of course I have no clue where the parcel is, but you would be amazed at how effective Pretending to know can be. Send them back an email saying it just arrived at the sorting station in New Jersey, and will proceed to California in 2-5 days. LOL

5) Don't feel bad about bending information. We have to do something to make up for the disadvantage we are at when it comes to being a Canadian seller stuck using Canada post.

6) Buyers hate paying handling fees, so don't call it a handling fee, call it insurance. Americans are used to paying for that. Our insurance is included, but who needs to know. You get your handling fee, and everyone is happy. The customer is now insured to get good handling. As long as you state all your fees in the listing, no problem.

7) Basically, the best strategy, in a nutshell, is that every time Ebay comes up with something creative that makes it harder for you to turn a profit, you should put your thinking cap on and be creative, so that the buyers (those who pay no fees) are actually sharing some of the cost of Ebay. Which is only fair. OPINIONS???

8) My customers are getting their items within a week, I average 3.64 US per listing in (handling) costs, and my feedback is great, check out our feedback. I have no worries with the new system.

Thanks for the input. I agree with your advice. My husband and I follow these same guidelines. I do think it depends on what type of items you sell.
We sell mostly sports jerseys that are in very good condition. However, sometimes we miss a snag or have mis-measured or sized an item wrong. Most buyers understand our mistakes and we offer full refunds. And they have then left positives. But we get some buyers and I must admit...they probably are men and sometimes quite young men...and they are very unreasonable. We are unable to make them happy. 3 of our 4 negatives came without the buyer ever contacting us...and they never did, even after we tried contacting them. We had one negative that was just swear words...luckily eBay removed this one!
I think your items would be sold to knowledgeable buyers and they are most likely used to conducting themselves in a proper manner. Maybe I am wrong.
Just my two cents!

I am somewhat between Treasure-pot and you on this one. There is nothing wrong with under-promise and over-deliver, but it should not be at the expense of a white lie. At least not as a rule.

The other thing to do to keep the DSR's up is to screen your bidders. This morning I cancelled bids from a "0" feedback bidder who registered yesterday, and from a "1" feedback bidder who registered a year ago, had one transaction and nothing since. The message I left as to why the bids were cancelled was:

Recent Feedback Policy Changes Make This Bidder Too Great A Risk.

Well with my experience, when shipping to Italy for example, I will ship by small packet - CP says it will be there in 7 Business days, but I know for a fact it takes 30 days to get there because of their customs, and when sent by surface (which I never do now), takes 3 months (no fault of CP) so I explain ahead of time when they should receive it and if they don't to get in touch with me first. So I sometimes I embellish the time of delivery just because I know better. Lore

Had an international buyer ask if he bid, if we would ship surface,(doesn't like the Air cost) when our listings state we only ship air parcel international. Quickly added his ID to our blocked bidders list.

I may have just saved us 3 potential negs in the future.

Tea - isnt that a little drastic, I know this feedback thing sucks and my shipping and handling fell from 5.8-5.6 but how is new buyer able to become a be good buyer if we dont give them a chance. Lore

Tell you what, you sell to the newbies, and once they have a track record for me to observe, then I'll sell to them. I'm more interested in keeping food on my table than helping someone buy their first Ebay item.

Well because sometimes they will bid anyways and want it their own way. I've had people ask me if I would ship surface, I said no, they went ahead and bid, and then refused to pay the air rates. Past experiences I guess. Once bitten Twice shy.

Also the fact that now, they could leave any feedback they want, and I can't. And also because their DSR ratings could affect my business.

I had few buyers who were new on eBay and they have become good eBay/off eBay customers. Any problems I had was with eBay buyers with FB above 20 and below 100), the newbs are easy to deal with, they do not try to pull FB tricks.

A never had problems with "O" feedback buyers.
A few days ago I sold a 800 USD item to a "0" feedback buyer from Russia and got money immediately through Western Union.
I wish to have more buyers like this one . 😉
