I bought merchandise, and the shipping said free, which im asuming would only pertain to the USA. (im from canada). The seller checked with his carrier, and told me the price was 53.95 after I had paid for the merchandise. Would I be able to paypal the extra money to cover the shipping fee? or how would that work?

Just log into PayPal and send the shipping charge to the seller's email address.

Any amount you pay that is not reflected on the seller's invoice to you will not be refundable if there is a problem with the item, if it never arrives, or if it arrives and is not as described. To maintain your full Buyer Protections, you need an invoice that correctly reflects the total amount you paid, including shipping. For eBay's Buyer Protections you must make one payment for the total amount.
If you haven't paid, the seller needs to send you a revised invoice with the correct shipping amount. If you've already paid, the seller needs to refund that and send a new invoice with the correct total. Your seller has nothing to lose by accepting an uninvoiced payment. It's up to you how important your Buyer Protections are. Good luck!

You want a revised invoice with the corrected shipping fee.
If the seller had advertised free shipping to Canada, he would not be allowed to add to the S&H even if it turned out he had estimated incorrectly. But he didn't give any cost for shipping here.
In future, before bidding, always ask for the cost of shipping to Canada. Some sellers insist on using unnecessary tracking which starts around $20-25.

Yes, you can send a separate PayPal payment for the shipping, BUT... as pointed out above, this amount will NOT be covered by eBay's or PayPal's buyer protections. If the package is lost, or the item damaged, you have no recourse to recover this additional money.
The workaround... the seller refunds your payment in full, then sends you a new eBay invoice with the appropriate shipping included. Your repayment will then qualify for full buyer protections.
