Actually I didnt answer you properly. I do feel that I understand the pulse of the many sides of Quebec people.
But I also have seen the control exercised by a Government intent on separation such that for a generation, the Quebec schools taught nothing about Canada in their history classes, raising a generation of children who were naturaly attuned to their Provincial heritage but ignorant about their National heritage.
These are not acts of a free nation, and as far as I am concerned no less treasoness than the Federal government spending money to raise Canada flags throughout a Province that for the most part, banned Federal flags from flying even on their Provincial and Municipal buildings.
Certainly history reflects that the French language was treated as a 2nd class language as were many of the people. But history also records that the Irish Catholic Canadians suffered ill treatment by those that felt they were superior, as did the East Indians when they began immigrating and many, many other nations who now call Canada thier home.
Lets also not forget our Native North American Indians, many of whom continue to be treated in a manner that is unacceptable in these times by such a rich nation.
But by overcoming the pains of a country's history, we each make contributions towards our future that make this country stronger.
While the people of Quebec voting for separation on the principles they believe their vote is for, those at the top of the movement have something else on their minds and in their agenda and it is called "Power".
