Ok just got off the phone with my CP Rep

1) In the new year 2004 tracking for small packet USA will be coming out
2) Canada post will start small packet for across Canada 2004

Ebay Canada Post discount

Many have you have called me 1-604-853-0424, you have stated that the Rep for Ebay Canada Post discount has stated the following . That if you write the CP Manifest manually you will be charged a surcharge

First their are two comments I would like to make . My Rep states that their is no surcharge for writing a manifest manually . The rep for Ebay is quoting info from Sept 1 2003 stating " that the 5.00 surcharge was started then "

Yes the surcharge was started then ....ONLY ON BULK LETTER MAIL

The Canada post Rep for Ebay is quoting from wrong info info not related to shipments of packages, but related bulk letter mail surcharge started in Sept 1 . The Canada Post Rep is intentionally trying to mislead Ebay Canada Post discount customers . The reason why is clear !!!

Canada Post wants you to do your manifest on line , to save them time ......not you .

What should you do ??? You should call your Canada Post Rep for the Ebay discount . Ask him why Expedited commercial rate to America is more then the counter rate with the online program ..The reason it's more even with the Ebay discount is because of the hidden brokerage fees

Remember if you open an account out with Canada Post outside of Ebay discount

You get the following when opening your own Canada Post Account
Discount on express post USA
Discount on Expedited USA
Written Manifest no surcharge

You can get terms with Canada Post ( most accounts)
You get your own Rep
Additional 2% off your bill if you use online CP program

Some whom have called me have chosen to close their CP Ebay discount account . Then open their own account with Canada Post. You need to look at your situation CP and weigh your options

Once again if you have questions about CP feel free to call me
Todd

Now my CP Rep did state it is possible , that Canada Post has requested that Ebay customers with the Ebay discount using the online CP program

To clarify, I referred to Xpresspost only. I have found that VCD software (with my level 3 USA) is approx $1.00 cheaper using the VCD software compared to the counter rate w/venture 1 card.

I have mentioned in the past though that even though it is still cheaper for me to use VCD, it still leaves me open to cubing and other charges at a later date.

A picture is worth a 1000 words so here goes both. I am trying to make this simple. This is how we use the "Chic Shopper Shipping System." I do expect Todd to jump in here and correct anything that isn't true to his system. If you are still skeptical, fire away with the questions. This is the simplest way to get the cheapest rates from Canada Post, unless someone can show me otherwise.

For closer view of the forms, CP has them on their website. I am trying to respect our customer's privacy so I have lowered the resolution and took the pictures on a stainless steel packing bench - love that glare. Actually, looks like my first eBay listing pictures. Geez, I forgot I never used pictures until after the first couple hundred listings.

The above photo clip is a mailed in payment delivered to Canada using Expedited Parcel. Cut the address off the correspondence or the return address from the envelope. Use a glue stick and put it on the parcel along with a Expedited Parcel Canada sticker (the one with the big 2 on it) and our return address label with the Canada Post insignia (logo with our account number). Make a note of the weight in pencil on the box for later. That's it for this parcel and since CP supplies nice free fragile stickers we use them like tape. If this was a small packet USA, we would use the green customs sticker instead of the Expedited sticker.

This above item is paid by Paypal going to USA. It is heavier than 1 kg so we ship Expedited Parcel USA. Since we ship most of our items this way, Canada Post will pre-print all your account information on their forms for you if you ask. Step one is cut out the shipping address from the Paypal email and get it on the glue stick. This time we glue stick the address right onto the Expedited form in the customer address area. Now all that you have to fill out on this form is the contents, weight, insured value (always $100 since that is what is included in the rate) and the only thing different than using the green customs form is that you have to sign it. That's it. DO NOT FILL IN THE SHADED AREAS. They are not needed anymore if you are using a manifest. No date shipped or postage cost is revealed. Staple the carbon copy to the customer "file" and that's it.

The manifest is the easiest part. It is simply a list of all the parcels you ship and to where. Use what is called the "MANIFEST" not the "SINGLE ITEM MANIFEST." Your own post office will probably be confused about the difference. They look very similar but on the MANIFEST you can list Canadian shipments and International or USA shipments. The other SINGLE ITEM MANIFEST is only for Canadian shipments. Simplify and get used to using one form. Above is a blank MANIFEST, the next picture is how we fill it out before the post office and the last one is one back from the post office with the shaded areas filled in. First column is the service code for the type of delivery (967 is CDN Expedited for example - they give you this info), second column is for your reference of who you shipped to (could use their eBay ID, name, complete address, doesn't matter - we use the name shipped to), third column is postal code or state abbreviation or country code, next is the number of pieces and weight. With this information CP can calculate the postage you owe them. The next boxes are for optional services and insurance which we forgot to complete but caught it at the post office. You can also fill out what you think the postage should be so it is easier to cross reference it to your bill. We don't bother. The last column is the reference sticker off the Expedited forms. The Canadian one we stick on because we use a sticker instead of the carbon copy form. The USA one we don't bother with because we staple the carbon copy directly to the customer's info (email or letter). The top of the form is filled out with your business info and hopefully today our pre-printed forms arrive.

These are the forms you need that will streamline this system for you: pre-printed Expedited USA #43-074-243 (02-11) Shipping label or Xpresspost; Expedited Parcel Canada label #33-086-571 (00-08); Green Customs stickers #43-074-076 (00-09); Manifest #33-086-565 (98-03) and while you have them on the phone, ask for the FRAGILE stickers #33-086-106 (00-12). It's all part of your postage cost, so don't hesitate to ask - they don't charge for any supplies. The only thing you have to provide is their logo on a label. But since you have to make a return label, just add their graphic to your return label like we did in the last picture. Remember, on the pre-printed Expedited forms, your account number is already printed below their logo so no labels are needed.

So to recap, all you need to do is call Canada Post and ask for a business rep because you want to set up a business account. I wouldn't bother telling them you sell on eBay, but that you have an online mail-order business. Use your selling ID as your business name. Be very optimistic about how much you plan to ship this year and how your business is growing by leaps and bounds. Here's where your wildest dreams are useful. They will send you out some forms to sign and a credit application. If you want, you can have them automatically debit your bank account or credit card for fees. Once your account is setup, call back for the pre-printed forms. In a week, you'll be posting here "why didn't I do this sooner!" The best part is the stealth postage, stealth shipping date (unless your post office likes to stamp everything - but they are not required to put any cancellation marks on your parcel) and MOST IMPORTANTLY it looks damn professional. Isn't that part of being a Power Seller?

I do everything the same except two minor things , that save me a little more time for me

Lets refer to the pictures above as 1, 2 ,3 ,4 starting from top

Picture 1 above

This for Shipping across Canada . The tracking sticker is provided through Canada Post and can be ordered for free. Goaliemitch has added a little sticker with his customer # on the parcel . If you look at his parcel in picture 1 on the far side of the picture you will see a white sticker. This is Goaliemitch Canada Post customer # .

My change that I do is the following . The sticker from Canada Post with the tracking ? You can request Canada Post to place your customer # on the tracking sticker for across Canada, when you order the stickers from them .This prevents having too add Your Canada Post customer # on each package manually

Adding the customers address to the Canadian Package
Goaliemitch has a great idea , he cuts the address out and places it on the package.

I elminacte the cutting ,Paypal provides a free packing slip . You can print this out , the packing slip provides your address and the cutomers address on it . Fold paypal packing slip three times , so that only your address and the customers address shows. Then place it in a Free clear
packing slip Canada Post provides

Next step ...Shipping to America

I do everything the same , but I do not cut and paste the address . I use the paypal packing slip , fold it three times and place it on the top of the box. If you are really fancy you can get the paypal packing slip to print your Canada Post customer # all the time on the top left of the packing paypal slip

But everything else is fine , on the Manifest I do not check the insurance . All items within Canada and American with tracking already have insurance included up too 100.00

Looks good

I'm understanding more now having seen the manifest in the snapshots... This is similar to how I am shipping, but I have to wait for individual packages to be done at the counter - looks very appealing!

I received a letter from Canada Post last week indicating that they were terminating my user agreement and that my account would no longer be valid after January 19th, 2003.

They sent me one of those Venture One Cards in the mail (gee don't they know my local postmistress gave me one months ago) and told me that I could either use the on-line system (which I have not looked at yet) or just drop everything off with the Post-Office, flash my Venture One Card and they would look after everything.

Also, my account which is on 15 day terms is being terminated and they sent me a new credit agreement, which calls for a direct debit to my account.....

It appears that what they are saying to me is the pre-printed manifests and pre-printed address labels are going the way of the dinosaur in my case and I will now be doing their key punching for them..... (we also use the pre-printed forms for expedtited shipping to the US).

Meanwhile you people are saying go out and get the pre-printed maninfiests etc, while Canada Post wrote me and told me I would no longer be able to use these forms....

Now I am very confused......

Jeff

PS - You also write about talking to your CP rep. I have never talked to a rep, how do I find out who my rep is?

You have to be shipping a certain volume with them 10 to 30 parcels a mouth, just will not cute it with Canada post. This volume will often let them call the shots.

I can almost guarantee if you called Canada Post open another account . Maybe use your ebay user name, as stated above be very generous when stating the amount of package your going to do . Best to not state anything about EBay or any comments about being on line , Just that you ship to America. You comment about the internet ??.I can bet they tell you that you have to use the on line form , for shipping

As for 15 day terms ?? They may ask you to fill out a credit record . This maybe the only way to get credit back .

When you call CP they may state the reason for , pulling your customer account with them Your volume may not been high enough over a period of time

Volume depends upon what level they give you and the type of service used. You can ship fewer packages per year and get a higher level discount if you are shipping everything Express Post instead of Expedited.

Its all a matter of dollars that you are generating for them in income. UPS is the same thing excpet they spell it out in terms of dollars spent as opposed to quantities.

As an example if your average shipping cost is less than $10, Canada Post would want you to make alot of shipments of your product to give them the return they would like to see.

My average cost is closer to $40 per shipment and the handling costs for Canada Post are only incrementally higher.

In other words, an envelope with $10 postage may incur $5 in handling costs giving them a $5 return. On the other hand my $40 shipment probably cost them no more than $15 in handling costs giving them a $25 return.

Using this assumption, the person sending out envelopes would have to ship 5 times as many products as I shipped to give Canada Post the same return.

Therefore I might qualify for a discount based on sending 1/5 the amount of packages out as someone else having the same discount.

Malcolm is corrrect the value of the shipment is somthing they will look at also the amount of packages as well

However if you have the venture one card and you want pick-up service with CP

You can open a small business account with Canada Post .They will charge a small weekly fee for pick-up ($5.00) . You can have as many pick-ups as you want . When you get busy in the holidays or even (Feb). CP will wave the pick-up fee. As long as you pay the weekly fee , your account will not be closed for the small business account

Just from what I have heard never , never , never tell them you doing internet sales . You will end up having less options when you open your CP account . They will basically tell you thaT YOU HAVE TO USE the online program

I dont have the Venture One card and I dont pay for pick-ups, they are free and I am well below their minimum weekly quantity). CP knew my business would be strictly Internet sales from the beginning and my rep travelled from Toronto to see my operation after I had been up and running for about 3 months.

I also dont use their online or other computer software to do my shipping, prefering to complete my manifests and shipping labels by hand.

I am totally beligerent when it comes to anyone telling me how to run my business and CP knows that.

Slightly off topic: After I sold my interest in a $40 million US company I looked at buying a franchise. After seeing that I couldnt even choose the colours of the doors I opted to remain totally independant and have remained that way ever since.

I dont know if that makes me an entrepreneur or just horsemaneur but that's the way I am and CP seems to take it (so far).

As many can tell , because Canada Post rules are not set in stone ...

Malcolm and I tend to rock the boat , often this can work toward your benefit

However if your not doing the volume in sales with CP , I would not advise rocking the boat

You might find your boat sinking really fast.

Low volume weather value of amount basically gives CP the call to do what they want with your account .

This is why i would like to get together a large CP pool . I finally got a site( auction co pilot dot com ) . It will be up running soon with lots of info regarding shipping to America . I am hoping to get people to write info regarding , with their experiences shipping with FedEx and UPS and CP . Basically I one stop shop for info on shipping to America and Canada. The site will be populated with info . My goal is to help sellers from Canada on Ebay , streamline thier shipping .

I feel this can be best done , by not just me providing my info put other powersellers input as well . This way the site will have a more rounded feel to it

Anyway off topic a bit , sorry

CP still seems like a lot of extra work compared to what we use..

Between our Dymo labelwriter and UPS software, I can generate all needed stuff for a UPS shipment in about 20 to 30 seconds.

Stick the waybill in the pouch, stick the pouch and Dymo label on the package - done!

UPS software also emails the customer with the tracking number(s), so they know when it's coming.

Hi
This is for Todd: tried to phone you but no pickup, or message system. thanks for the valuable info from both you and Bob. I have been using venture one since it was available. So far I had nothing but bad experience with CP customer service, I was promised supplies, software, those never came, this happened repeatedly over 4 years. last time when eBay sent me info on this supposed CP discount for PS's. I tried to sign up over the web link, it would let me, (stating my postal code not valid) so I called the 800 number and was told by the CPA associate, that I am the very firs to sign up. she took my info and promised to send me a package. that was in September(2003) the package never came. A few weeks ago the local CP software guy phoned me up, as he was contacted by eBay (not CP) that I am a Canadian PS, so he can set me up with their software. he came to my office and showed me the software that would save me 2% on top of the savings whatever I can negotiate with CP. It came out 5 minutes into the presentation, that you can only use their software if you send Express, expedited is not supported, and yes your clients will get hit with that infamous "customs brokerage fee" that UPS, and FedEx is using too as money making scam. The CP software is not easy to use, it takes more time to do up the documentation, than my method, that is a self invented/developed version of Todd&Bob's I use wide clear packaging tape to tape on the cut out paypal printed addresses (It rains a lot in North Vancouver, and buble jet printouts can wash off easily) I have not used this Manifest system and I would like to find out more about it.
Tnx

Wade... problem with UPS for inter-Canada shipping in my opinion is that their rates are way out to lunch....and this makes me less (read not) competitive when someone emails me and asks me what it is going to cost to send a set of golf clubs from me in Callander, ON to say Victoria, or even Toronto for that matter....

I can ship a set of golf clubs clear across the country for about $18. with CP, it would be close to double with UPS. Sure their software works well and their tracking is second to none, but its of no use if it makes you uncompetitive.

The problem with UPS is that in most areas throughout the country with the exception of the larger cities, the Brown Trucks have gone the way of the dinasour and have been replaced by contractors....

Jeff - agreed - they are a more costly domesticly, but there's discounts to be had - substantial ones - not this 2% B.S. from CP.

The customer also has to see a benefit offered by the courier too - realtime tracking online is a huge one imo - no more emails about where's my package.

Our sales (and I would assume most PS'ers) are export to the USA - and again substantial discounts can be obtained from UPS.

And at some point, you have to factor in order processing time - the old adage "time is money" certainly applies if you're sending out lots of stuff.
