Changes to eBay's Negative Feedback Removal Policy

To the Editor:
A user left me a nasty negative and then got suspended a few weeks ago. I emailed my TSAM asking why the comment stayed and they emailed me back saying that eBay determined the comment was still "relevant"

It looks like eBay made another change to feedback. According to their feedback removal page this is grounds for removal

"A member is suspended by eBay for behavior that we've determined is damaging enough to warrant removing all the negative and neutral Feedback they've left for sellers. Note: If a member is suspended within 90 days of registration, all Feedback left by that member is removed."

In 2008 when the original policy was put in place it just said "When a member is suspended, all their negative and neutral Feedback will be removed."

Changes to Feedback Policy

Hi Bernie,

It wasn't my neg. This letter was written by another user to Ina Steiner.

I posted it to note the change in the refund policy.

From:

"When a member is suspended, all their negative and neutral Feedback will be removed."

To:

"A member is suspended by eBay for behavior that we've determined is damaging enough to warrant removing all the negative and neutral Feedback they've left for sellers. Note: If a member is suspended within 90 days of registration, all Feedback left by that member is removed."

The buyer who left the seller a negative was NARU but the negative was NOT removed thanks to the new policy. It will be removed if the buyer is NARU'ed within 90 of registering on eBay. If it is after that time period it will only be removed if eBay deems it be be "damaging enough" which leaves lots of room for interpretation.

Yes, that is correct Judy. 90 days it is. eBay has to have some sort of time frame; otherwise members expect FB removal after a year or more.

The FB system is certainly not 100% fair but if a seller gets an occasional (even if seemingly undeserved) neg it will not really affect their ability to sell.

We presently have a current neg from a buyer in Vietnam that allegedly has not received not just one but 2 packages sent to him. No warning, out of the blue... whatever.

It happens and is part and parcel of having a FB system. Personally, I applauded eBay's move to remove a sellers ability to leave negs. The system had been so grossly misused by sellers that eBay had to do something to further avoid diminishing their buyer base.

Lest we all forget, buyers are the only reason (and I repeat ONLY reason) for our existence on eBay.

I know that negative FB does not prevent a seller from continuing to sell. I only posted this link to make other sellers aware of the change.

My point is that unless the buyer has been registered with eBay for less than 90 days, eBay may decide, at their discretion, NOT to remove a negative feedback from a NARU'ed buyer. The 90 days has to do with how long the buyer has been registered, and not to how long we have to request removal of a negative.

Previously they would AUTOMATICALLY remove all feedback from a NARU'ed BUYER whether it was positive or negative. . This has nothing to do with whether or not a seller should be able to leave negative feedback.

It is still stated differently on the .ca site.

If a member is suspended by eBay, negative or neutral Feedback left by that member is removed. If a member is suspended within 90 days of registration, all Feedback is removed.

I don't understand how someone goes about having someone banned/suspended. I recently had the worst transaction this month thru all my years on ebay. A new ebay member didn't understand policies and left threats to come by my house and do physical harm. He cussed me out and made my life a nightmare. I actually had to report him to the cops because I was pretty worried. Ebay saw the messages and really shrugged their shoulders.... Needless to say I received three negative feedbacks for the one transaction and he goes about like nothing matters?? What am I to do??

"What am I to do??'

contact eBay.ca staffer and explain the problem in details. Names and email addresses are available in the "Selling on eBay" board.

I had a buyer who tried to extort product for feedback, eBay got in touch with me after I forwarded all the information. eBay was great, they handled everything like a pro and I have had no problems since I reported this buyer.
