TEST AND PROOF.
I sell quality ammolite jewelry.
Search google for "Ammolite jewelry".
Ebay top of list or close.
open the Ebay page under "ammolite jewelry".
First page contains 30 items..
Of these--16 out of the 30 are not ammolite--those cheap brown things you see are ammonites fossils from Madagascar. Not ammolite at all.
So legitimate quality ammolite sellers are frozen out of 50% of the first ammolite page shown to buyers--which corresponds almost exactly to the 50% drop of ytraffic to my store year ober year this month.
Cassini also gives preference to stores that sell many cheap items--It does not give a **bleep** about quality or a perfect record.
Cassini is detroying our business here and I am not alone.Several stores in the jewelry line say the same thing.
The ones that seem to be flourishing are the ones listing hundreds of cheap junk jewelry under the fine jewelry categiry with lots of sales under $20.
i have put all this to Kalvin--he says he has sent in my story into the powers that be who have filed it in the circular file--the waste basket--no action or response.

"As I understand it subtitles are not searchable but I have used them a lot anyway to point to my other items"
Subtitles are searchable and free if you list on eBay.cafr.
I do. Try searching on eBay.com from words in my subtitle and you will find my listings! It works and it is free.

Hello again - I hope some of the suggestions help. I have found that limited experimentation can yield some very useful information, even if the experiment itself doesn't produce increased sales. I hope it does both for you.
As far as the "me" page goes, my own page suddenly got scrambled one day (extremely tiny fonts, bizarre spacings, etc.), then righted itself later, then became scrambled again. I think eBay has been monkeying around with that part of the site and forgot to go back and fix up errors. It would be good to report it. I gave up because no one else seemed to have these issues and the eBay.ca staff thought it was the browser I was using -- which it wasn't, based on the fact that for a couple of days the "me" page reverted to its original, proper look. I hope you can get somewhere on that issue.
Regarding getting to the "me" page from the Dashboard, it should show up next to your ID, FB score, etc. on the line at top left ("My EBay" line), actually on pretty much every page you go to on eBay. Perhaps it's not yet displaying because some things do take up to 24 hours to become visible on eBay once added or changed. Try checking again in a day or two.
Some of the other promotional tools I was thinking of were:
- Making use of your email subscriber list, i.e. encouraging anyone and everyone who buys from you or contacts you, to subscribe, and sending out promotional (or even informational) emails every so often. I keep my subscriber emails to no more than 1x/month, as I think more than that may be counter-productive and irritating
- Designing flyers that you can put in with parcels when shipped - eBay has a semi-automated and customizable tool for this (under "Manage Store"). You don't have to use these just to promote your items -- in your case you could use them as "informational" or background flyers, perhaps a sort of "certificate of authenticity", in the way a purchaser of a diamond gets a certificate. Include your logo and eBay ID and you may make a repeat customer
- If you're not already doing so, using Omniture to determine who is looking at what in your store, how they're finding you, and from where. This could be significant information to help you adjust your categories and listings. I find this information invaluable, especially if you dig a little deeper beyond the graphs themselves.
- Customizing your invoices (and packing slips) with your logo, if not already done. A number of my repeat customers told me they filed away their packing slip or invoice with the item they purchased, and found my store again that way later
- If you're a Facebook/Pinterest/etc. etc. fan, use the eBay tools to post links to your items there. You apparently can't easily post a store link (well, unless you're good with HTML I suppose), but you'll see the tool icons at the top of listings for linking individual items
- I'm not sure if you were able to do this (with the problems you had in composing your "me" page), but you can include website links on that page that you are not permitted to include elsewhere on eBay. One of those could be a link to a professional association type of website explaining the source and history, etc. of the gemstones you carry.
- Offering free shipping as far as possible - I think I saw this in your listings, I can't recall.
- Running a sale now and then - every time I have a markdown, my sales do increase, probably because "watchers" will see in their watched lists that the items have gone on sale. Sometimes, oddly, discounts in a particular category also create increased sales in another
- Although not strictly a promotional idea, doing everything you can to meet eBay's top standards will help to get your listings placed further up the page, and away from all the "pretenders".
The main problem I see, if I have understood you correctly, is that you need to get at least a couple of your listings displayed prominently and distinctively to lead buyers to your store. Once a buyer is there, you want to keep them intrigued and interested, and encourage them to return. Having a lot of photos helps, as well as using words like "geniune" in your titles, but there are other best practices criteria, which have been discussed a lot on these boards and are dealt with in the eBay help sections.
Good luck with your endeavours!

One thing I noticed in one of your listings I chose at random -- others may disagree, but I would remove the following text entirely:
If you are dissatisfied in any way please contact me so I have an opportunity to fix any problem before you leave less than 5 star feedback-----Or in the alternative, please leave no feedback at all.
It's probably a small point, but I always feel this type of request signals a lack of confidence in what you're selling and/or your service, or tells buyers you may have had a lot of trouble in the past. Buyers are unlikely to pay much attention to this information in any case, so I'd delete it. Just my opinion - keep it all positive and upbeat in your listing description.

You started me off on an exhaustive exploration of how Cassini works and for this I thank you.
My items are once again ranked very highly but sales are still dismal.
Ebay refuses to acknowledge that they allow misrepresentation by allowing cheap Madagascar ammonite fossils to use the term Ammolite---which it is not.
This results in the real ammolites that Ebay customers search for being crowded out by the cheap imposters and makes the real product much harder to find.
Do you know of anyone with real authority I can take this case to?
Everyone I have spoken to at Ebay promises help and then promptly vanishes having done nothing and wont return emails.

@pierrelebel wrote:I learned something today:
"Ammolite, is an opal-like organic gemstone found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of North America. It is made of the fossilized shells of ammonites, which in turn are composed primarily of aragonite, the same mineral that makes up nacreous pearls. It is one of few biogenic gemstones; others include amber and pearl.
In 1981, ammolite was given official gemstone status by the World Jewellery Confederation, the same year commercial mining of ammolite began. It was designated the official gemstone of the Province of Alberta in 2004 and the official gemstone of the City of Lethbridge in 2007.
Ammolite is also known as aapoak (Kainah for "small, crawling stone"), gem ammonite, calcentine, and korite. The latter is a trade name given to the gemstone by the Alberta-based mining company Korite International, the first and largest commercial producer of ammolite."
Now for some unsolicited advice. Take it or leave it as you see fit.
Suggestion - Why don't you incorporate the word "genuine" in your titles?
Also I noticed in your listings "but has no tracking number and is insured max $100 so use this service at your own risk.I will not be held responsible for lost items by users of this service." May I suggest you drop that line and similar references. When buyers pay you through PayPal, you are responsible to get the items to the buyer. If you have to purchase insurance (through third party) to protect yourself, that is your choice as it protects you.
Unfortunately your listings are raising "red flags" when I read them - possibilities that something may go wrong. My first reaction as a potential buyer is to hit the back button.
Same for the reference to "five star ratings". That stuff has no place in listings. Use the description of each listing in a positive way, selling and promoting yourself, your knowledge and experience, the quality your items and your service. Do not suggest possible delays and blame "customs" or the shipping companies. Keep it simple and promote your stuff.
"Understanding Canada Post.
Canada Post is not subsidized by the taxpayer as most other postal systems are. We run our PO to break even or make a small profit. This is why our postal rates are a bit higher than others."
Once again, lose that ftuff. Buyers do not care about Canada Post. It feels like an excuse to justify high shipping costs when compared to your American and foreign competitors.
"I do not make money on shipping and in fact often subsidize it."
Lose that too. It can only backfire when a buyer realizes you may have paid twenty-five cents less for postage that what you charged.
Finally, you may receive better placement in search results by:
1) stating "one day" handling instead of three
2) 14 or 30 day return privilege instead of seven.
One attracts more flies with honey than vinegar.
Good Luck
Excellent.
Let's all clog up Cassini with Key Word Spamming on all our listings, so we get to the top of all the searches.
There is a seller in the UK doing just this and they have 52 printable pages of junk writing under the photos on every single one of his listings, ensuring he comes out on just about every search advertising the junk he is selling, and it's selling alright.
It's been reported by several sellers to eBay but they don't care and have let him continue, even though he is screwing up cassini by doing it.
Best I try it me thinks, as Cassini is such a pile of sh-t that Key Word Spamming is clearly the way forward, then once everyone does it that'll really make it even more redundant, and then hopefully ebay will finally get rid of it.
Cheers
