Enough. I quit

Decision was made last week.

I was selling some titanium products for someone who made them. Sales were good, but never seemed to be great. Just closed my store.

With the increases in ebay fees, store fees, postage, USD decline, and the lack of sales, it seemed it just wasn't worth it anymore. ebay and paypal fees were 25% of sales. The worst part seems to be the ebayspeak - ebay not listening.

I did manage to extend my PS status for another month, and will be listing some items near the end of April, but it will be quiet as I have other work to do. Will be around.

Actually osprey, ebay wins. The reason you are finding sales down is probably because there are more sellers prepared to start auctions for much lower than you are. I'm in the same boat. Lets get one thing straight. Ebay is not the loser. I'm in the same boat. I'm not going to be around here much longer. Somebody just started importing a Motex labeler knock off. Incredible.

Sales are good, plenty of bidders (of course I'd always like more) and decent prices.

It's difficult to compete if you don't have a good niche. You guys are making things sound so depressing but plenty of sellers are doing very well.

Asian imports and people willing to make $00.01 profit per sale is the biggest change.

I pay about 5% over manufactured/delivered cost. My Buyer, purchases directly from the factories, not thru any distributors and orders are shipped in by 40' container quantities (several per year).

His cost for a lower-end product that Wallmart brings in, as an example, is identical (a low-end Les Paul sytle guitar).

However my problem isnt Wallmart who I can comepete with and in fact sell for less and make a profit, it is the manufacturers who are imorting directly and setting up warehouses in the US and making their products available to anyone who wants to sell them with their goal to control the entire market.

I can still list and sell some of my semi-pro grade items on eBay but none of my low-end nor my high end instruments. The high end is due to costs charged by eBay for the higher value goods where I must have a reserve and they often have to be listed a couple of times before they sell.

So as was pointed out by someone above, eBay will make money however the landscape of eBay is changing and as I have said repeatedly, they are managing the business with short-term goals leading to long-term failure.

They are continually doing what is good for the shareholders based upon immediate demands and not projecting the problems they will face in the years to follow.

yeh, Chinese folks makes you wonder. They charge for shipping from China, less the CanPost wants to USA... by FedEx air.

Also, I found out that many internet stores has lower prices then e-bay, so ebay not the cheapest place by any means.

In my humble opinion first e-bay competitor with solid channel strategy will kick the out in no time.

Worse yet if you follow the US PS Board. Apparently the Chinese are copying Sellers' pics and their English descriptions and using them to sell the very goods they manufacture.

This is NOT the small scale copying we see Sellers complaining about when they see a competitor doing it, rather it is being done on a major and rapidly increasing scale and NOTHING is being done about it.

From what I read, the listings are being done on the Chinese eBay site and the Australian sites however as they are available to the worldmarket, they are beginning to showing up on the US .com site.

GM just announced that they are planning to shut down some North American operations and begin manufacturing in China following a failed demand to their parts suppliers to cut prices even further.

If our stinking governments dont wake up soon and realize that the next attack on North America wont be a plane crashing into a large building but a major economic hit sanctioned by our own governments, we are doomed.

Once again, short-sightedness where like eBay, do only what is good for today and forget about the long-term reprecussions of your actions or inactions.

I just recieved an email notice to go to the Powerseller Portal for important information regarding my PowerSeller status. I've been expecting a warning for quite some time because my sales have been off quite a bit for 3 months. Trouble is there's no new information other than the email. My departure from here may be immanent - or I may have another month. I don't know.

I got my notice over a month ago however I am still Silver PS as my sales in December were high enough to carry me however this month will be "IT" i suppose.

I have had about $800 Cdn from 2 sales so far this month on eBay so it is likely that with one more sale of a popular item I will remain as PS however no longer Silver (Whopee).

Its funny how you are directed to the PS portal and there is NOTHING specific for you to read there.

I am in the process of doing it, should be up within the next few weeks. It is time consuming to say the least. I am the webmaster for another one as well, so my time is running low.

Hi there y'all. Been a while since I hung out at the Canuck board. But where Malcolm goes, I follow. I am his biggest fan, yunno.

Last year around this time, old sterling silver stuff, which I sell, went in the tank. Between the US/CDN dollar, the glut on eBay maybe and the lack of interest, I was losing big time.

So I switched gears immediately and started to sell wierd collectibles. I found just about anything that could get a few keywords cooking on it. That was my criteria - and a goal of a triple or quadrulple margin. Lofty goals, but somehow it was fun and it worked. But man I took some ribbing from my snotty silver friends!

Seems silver is on the up and up again. In the past to weeks I have sold alot of really nice things and in the coming week I am going to list a ton of it. I am buying carefully with some pretty sharp income goals and I may hit and miss.

But the moral of my post is, change and adapt and things might just work out.

I am heading back to post on the US Board.

Tonight I realized the difference between the boards and it has to do with attitude. Canadians seem to be too complacent, too ready to accept what is dished out.

I know that the good way of looking at it is to say that we are "Adaptable" however I think it means more that Canadians are more willing to take a back seat.

Hows your business plan coming along? I liked your idea about licensing your art work. You should do a little more brainstorming along those lines.

By the way, my sister-in-law has a large peice of art she did in Toronto's Children's Aid office (I think it hangs in the reception area) and I recall your piece that they are going to use for next years' Christmas cards.

Thats terrific.

My licencing plans are going well. And I just bought a huge whack of silver to list on eBay.

I find this board to be a nice place to visit. From the titles of the thread thy can be a scrappy bunch. Just that the fights seems to be more with pink elephants, like Canada Post. Why bother? Like they are going to change their rates or policies for us?

This is my kind of thread. Tossing around ideas about how to make a business better.

When I had my gallery, one of my strategies for selling paintings was pretty cool. Once a month or so I called up a big charity, who are constantly holding auctions, live or silent, to raise money. I picked a painting off the wall and donated it.

Two things happened. A room of Toronto's wealthiest people who paid up to $500 a ticket were prisoners in a room looking at it for about 5 hours. Also, the army of idle women volunteers, some of who were the society elite with nothing better to do, had to look at it for up to 2 weeks. They also had to come and see me to pick it up. They could not believe my "generosity". HAH!

Funny thing is I could not convince alot of other artists to do this. They thought giving away their precious treasures was beneath them.

Perhaps that was the difference between us. I was a painter who sold paintings. They were artisans.

OK, who am I who question an artisan?

*hey my posts are getting long like yours, Malcolm!*

My aunt owned 3 art studios in the Ottawa area about 15 years ago or so. When she started out, she held private sales in the homes of several embassies (My uncle was a former Mayor of Ottawa, so we were all well aquainted with all the Ambassodors).

She wasnt an artist, but she found several artists in the Ottawa area and really launched their careers, As a matter of fact, those embassy shows were about 30 years ago.

She set up a gallery in her home and then held shows in hotels by renting the Ballroom and inviting all the Big Wigs.

She had no problem convincing artists to donate paintings for charitable auctions (I even volunteered my time to several).

But Toronto is a different market than Ottawa and I suspect the art community is as well. WHat works here may not work in Toronto, but at least you gave it a try.
