I bought & paid for an item on ebay recently. The S&H included Global Shipping. From Bellevue, Washington US, to Toronto, Canada cost me $42 Canadian for a DVD set. This is outrageous! It was for "import" charges whatever that means.
It was my fault for not reading about the shipping costs more carefully.
I decided to keep the item as it's for my son's birthday. Don't you think items sent between the the US & Canada should not be included in the Global Shipping Center's charges? After all.we are on the same continent, even though different countries with the same culture. Also, our borders are long & undefended. There is aslo free trade between the two countries. I will no longer buy items from sellers who use Global Shipping as well as regular shipping.

Hi Roberta.. A listing (first part) that shows..import charges..to be provided at checkout means seller is using eBay Global.
Whats the difference...paying Customs charges upfront rather than when the mailman arrives at your door. ( it does however eliminate any possibility that item might slip through Customs without inspection and thus no fees.)
Regardless of NAFTA , free duty , canadians cannot import items over $20. without being obligated to pay taxes and added , an $8.50 Canada Post fee. I believe there is duty on DVDs as well.

The item you bought exceeded the $20 limit so you have to pay import fees based on the amount you bought the item for in addition to the shipping so that is why you ended up paying $42.
Please don't ding the seller because of the import fees. That is not in their control.

I have an issue with this practice. As the purchaser, I am the individual "importing" the item. And import duties are imposed by Canadian Border Services (CBS). This is an issue between CBS and myself and DOES NOT involve the seller. So why is eBay Global collecting the fee? Canada Post is the agency that collects duties on behalf of the CBS, not eBay Global. Also, the auction that I was involved with listed NO WHERE that import duties would be charged on a used book!
Where is the guarantee that once the item crosses the border, I won't get dinged for duty again?
I've purchased more than 1,000 items on eBay and this has NEVER happened to me before. In light of this issue, I WILL NOT be purchasing from sellers who use this program.

You are so right and it is a rip off by ebay and Pitney Bowes which is insane since most of the items are actually NAFTA covered with nothing due. In many cases the only fee is processing with nothing to the CRA at all.
Then there is the shipping cost scam since we all know that USPS is a good service and usually cheaper.
In a way these people make bankers with their add-on fee structure seem like pikers.
A lot of the time I send my phone number so that I can arrange better shipping and other fees.
Take care, Stephen
