Importing decorative knives into Canada

I recently purchased a decorative (toy?) knife from a foreign seller, and he has been having trouble shipping it to me here in Canada.  His first attempt was returned to him by the shipping company (China's version of Canada post?) as "undeliverable".

I've never had a problem with someone sending me something in the past so I'm wondering if perhaps Canada Customs has some kind of restriction on importing knives?  Does anyone know?

I'm not sure if this thing is a toy or an actual knife (some kind of miniature sword thing based on some kind of popular video game or something like that).

Thanks,

Dave...

Re: Importing decorative knives into Canada

You yourself said toy (?) but even so sometimes I watch the show - forget the name Border something.  it's usually based in Vancouver and it's about people trying to come into Canada with the weirdest things which are confiscated.  In the show it also shows Canada Post and how they scan everything and anything suspicious, and I'd call any kind of knife, whether a toy or not, suspicious is not sent on.  They usually try to contact the seller or the recipient (you).  Maybe you will, maybe you won't, but I'd be very, very surprised if you received it and thank goodness they do scan.

Sorry, meant to say that when they find something like that it's usually just thrown away.....it's drugs of course that they try to do all the contact work.

I've had many knives and swords imported into Canada and never had a problem. However there are restricted knives and other similar weapons which you cannot import. Check with Canada Customs on their latest list and see if your purchase is one of them.

Re: Importing decorative knives into Canada

Thanks that sounds like good advice.   Someone else posted a note to say that they doubt knives can be imported so it's definitely worth checking out....even if too late for this purchase.  It would be useful to know in the future.

I can see where some swords and military knives could be considered weapons and there being some sort of restriction, but lets face it....you can buy knives at the corner store which can do just as much damage as a military knife if it's used to harm someone.

So it seems a bit unlikely to me that Canada Customs would have a restriction on something that's a replica of a video game knife/sword thing.    My son wanted it and I thought I'd order it and give it to him as a gift.  Believe it or not....he wanted to use it to cut his wedding cake at his wedding!

Oh well, whatever.

Re: Importing decorative knives into Canada

Yes that's also useful advise.  Someone else also suggested I check with Customs as well.   I'll do some checking and see if I can find a website or something where I can check on it.

For purposes of the inquiry, I'll call it a sword replica knife and not refer to it as a toy.   (although it may be exactly that - I'm not sure)

Thanks,

Dave...
