Is anyone here using Netscape as a browser?

"Netscape Navigator was a proprietary web browser that was popular in the 1990s. It was the flagship product of the Netscape Communications Corporation and the dominant web browser in terms of usage share, although by 2002 its usage had almost disappeared."

When searching Omniture Service reports on browsers used to view my listings, it shows the following:

1. Netscape Navigator 4.0 162 56.6%
2. Mozilla (Gecko) 58 20.3%
3. Safari 56 19.6%
4. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 8 2.8%
5. Netscape Navigator 4.08 1 0.3%
6. Microsoft MSN Explorer 1 0.3%

The Browsers Report identifies the browser type and version used by each of your daily unique visitors. This data gives you an understanding of your audience's Web sophistication level.

Use this report to:
Design your pages to meet your audience's needs
Identify your audience's preferences
Test your pages in popular browsers

This puzzles me. Why is it that the majority of my listings are viewed by people with an outdated browser and not something popular like Microsoft Internet Explorer?

Re: Is anyone here using Netscape as a browser?

An error? I'm guessing Omniture is referring to Mozilla Firefox, which is I think the #1 browser used today and is not on your list. Firefox 4 is the current release.

Additionally, Firefox 4.08 is the current Beta version available for those who enjoy testing possibly unreliable software 🙂

Interestingly, I don't believe Gecko is classed as a browser, rather as a function within a browser:
Gecko's function is to read web content, such as HTML, CSS, XUL, and JavaScript, and render it on user's screen or print it. In XUL-based applications Gecko is used to render the application's user interface as well. Gecko is used in many applications, including a few browsers, such as Firefox, Mozilla Suite, Camino, etc.

Very odd.

zarzuella: Have you checked yours? I would really be interested in what info other sellers are getting.

I tried to check but I can't see a place on Omniture to look at the types of browers used. That might be because I have a basic store, rather than a premium.

Re: Is anyone here using Netscape as a browser?

Netscape only commands a small (and diminishing) % of browser usage.

Re: Is anyone here using Netscape as a browser?

My numbers are similar:

1 Netscape Navigator 4.0 56.60%
2 Mozilla (Gecko) 26.10%
3 Safari 13.50%
4 Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 2.50%
5 Netscape Navigator 4.5 0.50%
6 Netscape Navigator 4.02 0.30%
7 Microsoft MSN Explorer 0.30%
8 Netscape Navigator 4.7 0.30%

However, the low numbers for MS Explorer contradict all statistics I have seen on the subject: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

.

Hi PJ,

That feature is not available for a basic store.
