From time to time I see a listing where the item "location" filed does not factually represent where the item is located.
It may be a case of a Canadian seller showing his/her location while using an American drop shipper
Or a seller who moved and forgot to change the "location" field in the listings.
Or a seller not understanding what "item location" means. I came across one this morning. The well-known, well-respected seller is located in Ottawa, our national capital. His listings indicated "USA" in the location field. Trying to help, I contacted the seller and explained the "location" field should show the actual location of the item.
His reply: "I list on eBay.com"
???
Please folks check your listings and make sure the "location" field is properly filled.

Some people are so paranoid they think that if they put their country in, a buyer will show up at their door. ebay fosters this with the ID game of no real names.
I say my bank card PIN out loud. People start wailing and crying "You can't DOOOOOOOOO that! Oh woe, woe is you."
I say, do you remember what I just said? Between tears they reply "no". I ask if they have my card to use. They reply "no". So, I ask "What good are some numbers, you think I said, that you can't remember, for a card you will never have?".
"Oh yeah, well, sniffle-sniffle, what if there is a guy, and, um, he, well, sniffle, like, does stuff, like 'cause he heard something, and, like, follows you, and breaks into yer house, stuff, and, ya know, it could happen, and then, man, and then you will be sorry."

How do you know that seller keeps his stock in Ottawa? Perhaps all their inventory is down the road and across the border. In any event they are probably shipping from the Ogdensburg NY so it's not totally inaccurate.
Sellers must be clear and accurate about the location their item will be shipped or picked up from.

The ones I really dislike are the sellers who fill in location with something other than a location, such as "Discount City", or "Sunny South", or any such meaningless designations. I do like to know where a seller is shipping from, because it gives me an independent means of estimating delivery time.
And... I agree wholeheartedly with 'Mr. E.' that there is far too much smoke and mirrors from sellers on eBay who seem to be paranoid about revealing anything about who they are. Yes, there are small risks, but I'd be interested to hear whether Pierre has ever had any serious problems of identity theft or home invasion, etc. as a result of showing his customers who he is.
Although I must admit I don't say my "PIN" out loud in stores.

A few people here might remember Dexter, we went around and around and around on this topic years ago. Depending on his mood for the day (different shades of sour) he either promoted the physical location when you applied the address label as correct or the location you handed it over to the first third-party carrier or somewhere in between or something entirely different.
This was Dexter's theme song.........

I have known the seller for over 25 years and visited his store quite often.

No.
eBay, my customers, suppliers, etc... communicate to my PO Box exclusively.
The location of my stamp inventory was unknown and never advertised, except when I had a showroom in Toronto, back in the 1990's. It had adequate security.
Now that I am more or less retired, it does not matter anymore but I have always been very security minded.
Back in the early 1990's, when looking to set up a showroom in Toronto (Danforth and Coxwell area), the first call I made before signing the lease was to the police department to ascertain the risks in the area. Was told it was one of the safest in town with most storeowners living above their stores.

Location is only useful for ebay delivery estimate, for item without local pickup is meaningless to buyer.
How to handle situation where seller controls 3 warehouses and ships from 3 locations depending on availability and buyer location? One well-known example for many - FutureShop.
My (ebay unsanctioned) advice is to underpromise/overdeliver. Choose location where most Ebay users get "worst" delivery estimate or add handling time to accomodate inter-warehouse shipping delays. So if you have two trucks moving between warehouses weekly, add 3 days handling. Most buyers will be pleased.

He is an unethical scammer !

"He is an unethical scammer !"
I wish the answer was that easy.
Reality is that the seller has a large staff. He personally does not get involved in listing on eBay. A relatively new staff member was given the job of preparing new listings on eBay, unaware of the meaning of the "location" field. The staffer assumed (we all know the meaning of the word) that listing on eBay.com meant "USA" in the location field.

I think Dex left shortly before I started reading the boards although his name was often mentioned.
That song also reminds me of nos on the ps board on .com.
Mind you...I only read about 1/10th of his posts so perhaps he has some moments when he compromises.

Nope....he NEVER changes his tune, he just mixes up the chorus's so you think it's a new tune.
Dexter was a different kettle of fish, he would proclaim everyone as wrong and regardless of the evidence to the contrary he would NEVER acknowledge that he might possibly have been in error.

eBay's policy about Item Location.
Policy overview
Sellers must be clear and accurate about the location their item will be shipped or picked up from. We don't allow false, inaccurate, vague, or misleading information about the location of an item in the Item location field or description. When listing items for sale, sellers are expected to provide the city, province, and country of their item so shipping charges and delivery times can be accurately calculated and communicated to buyers.
Also, if there is a location stated in the item description, it has to match the location in the item location field.
Make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, it may be removed, and you may be subject to a range of other actions, including limits of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account.
What are the guidelines?

There is also something about using the postal code which identifies location.
and what shows if you do not use the postal code.... what shows on eBay.ca versus eBay.com
