Bought an adapter for SATA drives. When I recieved the item and opened it, the power plug was the design for European plug and voltage, but there was an adapter with it to fit North American plug. So I followed the instructions for the device and when the power was applied to the harddrive, the drive began to spin up, but then I saw smoke and a burning smell coming from the power connector where it attatched to the drive. I disconnected it immediately. Now the drive will not work and I have been told the PCB is probably fried and it may have damaged the heads. I notified the seller and told them what happened. They denied that it could be their product that caused the problem. I sent them pictures of the power plug they sent compared to the one shown in the eBay listing and how different it was. Then when I told them that the HDD I was using it on was a 1.5TB, they said that their product only supported up to 1TB, but find that in the ad? I can't find it.
So now the dead hardrive is my problem, if I return the item I paid $17 US for, it would cost me $11 Cdn to return it to China to recieve a $17 refund...hardly worth it.
Do I name the seller???

An item number's fine, although I think I've figured it out anyway.
Was this item listed as being located in California but it shipped from China?

Hello,
The sata to usb device was purchased from China, free shipping but it would cost me 11$ to send it back to get a full refund. I sent the HDD RMA to Seagate and they replaced it but not with the same model that I sent them. Which was fustrating as I had a pair of identical drives (ST31500341AS) in my NAS. The seller from China didn't offer me any compensation for the drive that was damaged, and would not acknowledge that 1) The adapter plug for the device was not a North America plug. 2) They claimed in the listing that the device would only support up to 1TB?? (it never/doesn't say that)
I trashed the Chinese unit, they refunded me 12$ US, so I lost $5.00 US, a damaged HDD, and a replacement drive that was not the same model to pair up in my NAS. Also, wheteher this is a fluke or not, I have Qnap NAS and afer the issue of the HDD heating up and smoke coming from it, did it still work??
Yep, I plunked it into my NAS, and guess what? The NAS stopped recognizing the drive! So I basically screwed the NAS because of the HDD being fried. So now I had to RMA my NAS.
Anyway, I am turned off by buying things from China, I realize there are a lot of items manufactured there, but they have somewhat better quality control.
And I can't leave negative feedback about the seller. I ended up getting a Kingwin device model that worked with the drive with no issues
(buyforchinese) I am staying away!
Thats my rant, thanks for listening!

It would have cost you a lot more than $11 to send the item back with delivery confirmation. Chances are that had you sent it back without delivery confirmation, the seller would never have 'received' it back so no refund.
