Hi Everyone.

Did you happen to see this notice that came out today. As of Jan 16th/06 you will not be able to advertize that you will accept cash as a form of payment.What difference does it make to Ebay if cash is exchanged betwen the buyer and seller. Ebay still gets its fee's.... I have many buyers send me cash in the mail. NOT ONCE have I had any claims of me not sending the item purchased.

I stopped taking paypal about 30 days ago. Was tired for paying high % charges and them battling customers and paypal with chargebacks. I even had proof one time that the item was shipped and sitting at the post office to be picked up by the buyer..Lost that $$$ real quick and never got the item back....

Hmmmmmm!

Well at least it doesn't say that you cannot communicate in any form that you accept cash (like the recent PayPal credit card policy). It only says it cannot be stated in the listing.

I might even be able to understand a restriction against a seller who offered cash as the ONLY payment method but to restrict offering it as an option seems way over the top.

I've had plenty of buyers for whom cash was THEIR prefered method of payment. I've only ever made a few purchases on eBay (low value) and I have ALWAYS paid by cash in the mail. It is the easiest, cheapest and in the long run most secure method of payment for me.

As a seller I love getting cash in the mail!

The only positive spin I can put on this is that as eBay becomes more and more restrictive the alternatives seem better and better. If enough sellers make a move elsewhere the buyers will as well.

I thought the same thing Ben. the new policy says that --- you can not "solicit" cash payments in your eBay LISTING.

the thing about the new "improved" safe trading policy that bugs me is that it says you CAN accept bank-to-bank cash transfers. sorry --- call me crazy but I don't feel like giving a stranger my full bank account info. what's so safe about that? 😉 Gail

When you give someone a personal cheque you give all your bank info (and generally more than what is required for a direct transfer).

Am I calling you crazy? If so it should be taken as "nice crazy"!:-x

If a buyer prefers to pay cash its not Ebays "policies" that will stop sellers & buyers in not using this type of payment.

If someones want to pay us in cash thats fine with us. We haven't had any problems with this method up to today.

We don't say we accept cash in the listing, but we get it from time to time. It's great for us. Feels like suddenly got some more spending money. The buyer will just email us if they want another payment method. No worries.

I often get US cash in payment from overseas, because of the high costs that those buyers incur in purchasing money orders, or their inability to do so. Cash is usually sent via registered mail, unless it's a very small amount. This has worked fine for all parties for years. Paypal is absolutely useless for payments from abroad as there is no security at all for sellers. I'll certainly be careful not to include "cash" in my listings, but will it be OK to still mention "cash" in the "payment methods accepted" section ? Likely not, so can we state "contact me for other acceptable methods of payment" in the 'methods accepted' section ? I can see that pretty soon, "Paypal" will be the only method we can include in our listings.........and then I'll lose a huge chunk of overseas sales. It's nothing to do with safety, it's all about fees............ Fenian

I have to say that as much as I LIKE getting cash, it does have its downside, mostly that it can't be traced in any way. We do not say that we do or do not accept cash and people who want to pay with cash still send it so I don't see there being any real difference with the new rules. I would however be peeved if we had to note "we can NOT accept cash" which I think would be really over the top.

If eBay is trying to squeeze out all other methods of payment save paypal (which they own) the anti-trust suit won't be far behind.

What about CCNOW? I haven't used them in years but some people still do. I'm sure there are other online payment services that haven't been approved by eBay. What kind of crap is that???

I like PayPal. Some things about it bother me but for the most part I like it. What I don't like however is having something shoved down my throat. It makes me wonder if they're only going to be approving services that are part of the service/solutions providers programs? That will be very sad. :(

It's your free choice not to use PayPal~ and if you choose not to, your loss. 95% of my payments come through PayPal, and when I buy, I never bid on an auction that does not offer PayPal. Believe me, I'm not alone there.

As far as the cash thing goes, it's simply a reaction to the scammers who love cash, and push it in their dishonest listings. It's an effort to cut down on the scams. You are still able to accept cash, as I understand it, but not allowed to directly ask for cash payment in your listings. To me, that just makes sense~ who mails cash?

I never post on my listings that I accept cash. I ask the buyers how are they going to pay for it, and they say cash so I can save on taxes. The only thing is that in order for them to pay cash, they have to pickup the item from the warehouse. I keep the cash, they save on taxes and everybody is happy.

At the moment this is true, don't be surprised down the road when in an effort "to improve security and provide a richer buying experience Seller MUST offer PayPal as a payment option" is added to this payment policy.

eBay will always allow sellers to "choose" as long as the all the choices benefit eBay's bottom line.

hi: for your sellers out there NOT ACCEPTING PAYPAL.. how has it affect your business. does buyers not prefer paypal?? second question is; how long does one need to hold a wire transfer prior to shipping item?? thanky for your comments,

Hi 4167885122, I didn't accept Paypal the first 2 years i used ebay. When I started accepting it I noticed several things. 1) i got more bids and higher final prices. 2) I was better able to streamline my packing and shipping procedures. We can do most of it on Sunday, ship it off Monday morning and be ready to work aon another week's worth of listings to store in the place where those ones were (I work at home). 3) There is much less wasted time going to the PO every day after I have sorted letters, found parcels, and done all the paperwork after receiving 20 payments (how it used to be). I think Paypal pays for itself in higher prices, makes it easier to do more quickly, and I have only ever had one chargeback out of all of the transactions I have used it for. It did make me mad that it was for a chargecard fraudulently used (yeah, like I could tell that?), but the amount was small. And while I'm not thrilled about ebay pushing PP, I'm not upset when my buyers use it. And you can always encorporate a bit into your shipping to cover the costs of PP if you want to. (for example the exchange rate of 15% or so!). I am always happy now when buyers want to send payment, but only because there are so many less of them. And no, their personal cheques don't bounce either. Of course, I deal mostly in books and readers are the most honest, straighforward, grateful buyers you'd ever like to meet. Gloria

If it works for you then fine.....

If I sell a $10 item to Europe that is paid by PayPal they are taking almost 8%, on a $5 item it's well over 10%.

Of course if you don't have the facilities to accept credit cards any other way then you are pretty much stuck with PayPal. The other important factor is the type of items you are selling, in a competitive and crowded category you will lose bidders if you do not accept PayPal. If your items are unique this is less true.
