Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

Good morning.

A quick question today.

Back in September 2013, following hundreds of posts by Canadian buyers questioning and commenting on several aspects of eBay's Global Shipping Program (GSP), you initiated two threads on the Buying Central Board:

http://community.ebay.ca/t5/Buyer-Central/Comments-about-the-Global-Shipping-Program/m-p/149059#U149...

http://community.ebay.ca/t5/Buyer-Central/Questions-about-the-Global-Shipping-Program/m-p/149063#U14...

Collectively, these two threads generated over 1,700 posts and over 6,800 views.  These numbers are very impressive for eBay's Canadian boards.

My question today is:

Does management at eBay.ca plan to answer many of these questions and comments or is the purpose of the threads to collect information and comments from Canadian users and forward to your bosses in San Jose?

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

Does ebay.ca ever plan to add Purolator, FedEx, UPS etc to the list of available shipping options.

Right now we only have Canadapost shipping options to choose when we list on ebay.ca

but many people get better rates with Purolator, UPS etc.

ebay.com offers USPS, FedEx, UPS

would be nice if Canadian sellers could use the Calculated shipping option for more then just Canadapost.

I have been waiting for over 9 years for this.

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

About the GSP.

If one compared today with the start of the GSP, one gets the impression  that there have been pricing adjustments.

My impression is in relation to books.

and... One suspects that a lot of the adjustments were made in relation to the GSP discussion boards on eBay.ca

Hi cumos55,

Would you mind being a bit more specific about these adjustments please - are you referring to Item Price, Shipping costs or Import Charges?

Thanks,

Hi ezcreation,

Adding more carriers to the calculated shipping represents a fairly big amount of development work, and unfortunately is not something we can get resources to assign to for the time being. This may change in the future, however.

If you do have better rates with a carrier other than Canada Post, you can easily offer that to your buyers using flat rate shipping, or even by building the shipping cost into your item price and offering free shipping.

Hi Pierrelebel.

It's always great to hear from you. I hope you are beginning to thaw out in Belleville.

The purpose of this thread is to collect information and insights around the Global Shipping program, and is being monitored by the Global Shipping team directly. My Toronto-based team and I have regular meetings with this team as well, and we refer often to the discussion threads.

Global shipping is great in theory because it opens up more inventory to Canada that previously only shipped to the USA. But there are lots of very valid buyer concerns and confusion around the implementation that we have today. We're listening, the Global shipping team is listening, and we're already working on buyer experience improvements that we hope will address some of those concerns.

Cheers!

Hi Cumos55.

It's very likely that is exactly what happened. Much more to come.

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

Would it be possible for eBay to add an option to the store "Vacation" settings to permit a weather-related message to be shown on each listing, rather than the "Seller is away" message that is currently the only option?  It could say, for example: "This seller has put this store in abeyance due to severe weather which is expected to cause delays in communications, order processing and shipping."  EBay did a similar thing on the "Leave Feedback" page after Hurricane Sandy.

At least 3 or 4 times every year, ahead of a really bad weather event, I put my store on "Vacation" to protect myself from issues related to shipping delays (or power outage - i.e. communications failure), which as everyone knows are a recipe for destructive DSRs.  I usually put a large notice on my store home page that the absence is weather-related, but that notice doesn't get seen anywhere else.  It would be good for buyers to be able to see that information on each item page.  By the way, I generally leave my listings visible during the "shutdown", since it's usually only 3 or 4 days at most.

I believe this would be a big help to those of us selling from Canada.

Any chance of this idea getting anywhere up the ladder within eBay?  By the way, I've been on "vacation" already twice this winter, and we're just getting started. Smiley Happy

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

thank you for the update, not what I hoped but at least an answer.

the problem with flat rate is where I am in Nova Scotia, to send the same large courier parcel to either Boston or Las Vegas, it is not the same price, in some cases the west coast is 2 times the price of east coast.

there is where the calculated shipping comes in to give the proper price to all buyers when they view the auction, just like it already does with canadapost selected services in the listings.

ebay.com already has this in place, seems it would be easy to copy their set up, where it is ebay is ebay is ebay after all.

but I'll just wait until I see an announcement page post this news .

the GSP is a joke, the prices for brokerage are killing any chance of a sale, that is why I do all my own, it isn't that hard and because everyone is afraid to do a little work, the GSP is good for them, but the prices are just crazy.

thanks

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

Incidentally, I should add to my question about "Vacation" settings that obviously severe weather events don't just mean winter weather -- we get the tail-end of hurricanes on this coast (Nova Scotia) that can cause serious power outages.  I'm sure other parts of the country have their non-winter weather woes too, that can result in significant shipping delays and/or communications issues.  Thanks!

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

Also in regards to weather, I received an email Announcement that the sellers in many of the U.S. states are being given protection from negative FB and low DSR's because of the storms they have been experiencing.  I have not seen any of that protection being offered to Canadians affected by the severe weather conditions here.  Will the same protection be given to us?

The roads around Stratford have been closed for 2 days, finally re-opening today.  The roads are still treacherous.  I was able to get my packages to our local postal outlet but the Post Office was unable to transport the mail to the nearest sorting facility until today because of the road closures.  That means all of the sales I have made since late Friday afternoon are just now on their way to that facility.

I know there are many areas north of here where the roads are still closed and it will affect sellers in those areas even more.

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

I have one other question for today.  This has become a serious issue for me (and I'm sure for other sellers).

If eBay decides to prohibit the use of a particular word, term or phrase in listing titles -- a word, term or phrase that buyers understand well and use regularly to search for particular items -- will buyers searching by that term still find the seller's listings, assuming that term is found only in the body of the item description, and assuming the buyer does not check off the box that says "search in descriptions"?

I'm not referring here to any registered trademark, brand, or company name that could be interpreted to be an infringement of trademark or copyright, but a commonly understood and recognized word or term that a particular set of buyers uses and recognizes.  Although these aren't the particular terms/words I'm alluding to, examples might be the words: "Cosplay" or "Civil War Re-enactors".

I'm extremely worried that removing my essential keyword will also remove all my buyers and give an advantage to every competitor who still uses that term. Raphael will know why I'm asking this question Smiley Happy

Hello westernstargifts,

Happy that you are starting to come out of the mess that the storm(s) left your area in. Usually such protections are applied at a North American level, however I will double check to make sure the right measures have been put in place and I'll get back to you. Keep in mind that protections like these aren't always applied in real time. If you receive negative FB or low DSRs as a result of delays beyond your control, please alert me via email.

Hi rose-dee,

We constantly work with the policy managers to ensure the rules applied by the CS agents remain fair and accomplish nothing more than what they had been designed for. Sometimes, the way such rules are interpreted may raise the need for discussions within the CS org and the Policy Management teams, so that the enforcement of those rules doesn't infringe in the normal business process. This process may take time however, so please bear with us 🙂

Re: January 8th Weekly Board Hour

Thank you Raphael, I'd be grateful if you could still work on this issue, but my question was whether in the meantime, buyers will find me if they search by a particular word if I only put that word within the description and/or custom item specifics areas?  In other words, does it matter where the term is in relation to how easily buyers will find my listings?

And, again, I should add, that I'm referring to buyers who don't know enough to check off the "include descriptions" box when searching.

Thanks!
