Hello Canadian eBayers,

Welcome to the last Weekly Board Hour.... for the month of March, that is! Today it's just myself and Bryan.ca. We are both Country Product Managers and are looking forward to your questions and comments. We'll start answering in a few minutes, so fire away!

March 27th Weekly Board Hour

To continue last week's discussion on the new "It Ain't Yours Until You Pay For It" policy:

http://community.ebay.ca/topic/Weekly-Board-Hour/March-20th-Weekly/3000008888?start=0

1) My question was not answered: buyer buy an item listed at BIN and bid on another one. Will PayPal refund me the additional fee of $0.30 per payment received? It's not fair to force me to pay twice that fee for an Immediate Payment eBay forced on me!

2) As all sellers here know, people are not all reasonable but emotional. Some don't think before making a move, so that is a possibility as a direct result of eBay's decision. Of course, buyer could be reported, but how do I prove my point if the buyer doesn't write me to express his irritation and leave a 1 anyway?

3) I do not offer free shipping on most items. One photo in Canada cost $1.34 to ship and $2.20 from 2 to 5 photos. Let's say my buyer is Canadian and shop on eBay. com... and buys 5 photos. IF buyer wait for my combined invoice, I will FVF on $2.20. BUT if buyer doesn't wait for a combined invoice, fees will be calculated on $1.34 x 5 = $6.75. That is NOT fair. Will eBay refund me the difference on FVF?

By the way, one hour of questions and answers per week is too short. Barely have the time to explain or discuss topics. 😞

I would like to know if ebay is ever planning on having the item location show 2 different options.

For example. I am in Canada and registered in Canada.

I currently use Canada Post for Canadian buyers and USPS for USA and International.

Right now I have to choose, is my item located in Canada or the US.

I would love to see the ability to show my items located in Toronto for Canadians and located in Rochester NY for Americans and the rest of the world.

Thank you

Question from adela_b in the buyer forum

What happens when a “Request a total from seller” goes unacknowledged?

I believe that after you sent it there is a screen with message like that “Seller has two-three business days to respond to it”. At the end of day three there is still no answer. So according to the new eBay rules a Non Paying bidder can be opened at the end of day two and technically the buyer is at fault. Most sellers do have the dispute opening thing set up automatically. Does eBay system prevent a dispute to be opened while you are still awaiting a response from the seller? Also is there a time counter in this part of the messaging system to implement some sort of penalty to sellers who fail to acknowledge “Request for total”?

TIA

Hi Raphael and Bryan!

I saw the latest free listings by invite only email that was for ebay.com only.  I know the latest one was for specific categories which included my selling categories although I didn't receive an invite. Does this mean that these free listings will only be for US sellers and not for Canadians? Will there be separate ones now for us in Canada?

BTW, the categories on the email were very confusing. Since when is Sewing & Fabrics under Home & Garden? Its always been under Crafts. Even the category number was strange and not one that I could find anywhere.

Hello beautiful_times,

Sounds like you need to create two listings for a single item, in the sell your item form you can define the items location and define its shipping options individually.

That should solve your issue.

That would then be a duplicate listing, cause inventory control issues and with the item limits that ebay is now using would cut the amount of listings I can have in half.

What I need is the option to say item is located in Toronto and ships from Rochester or ships from Toronto. That would solve my problem and those of any Canadian using USPS.

Hi msmaggie060,

These emails are invite only, so even if you are registered on .com you might not get the email if you don’t match the invite criteria. Yes, in Canada we have similar invite only emails that go out, you might be on the list in the future.

Category changes happen a few times a year, you can check the seller release boards to see the new updates.

If you list on .com and .ca and the item location(s) are different sounds to me like they would not be duplicate.

And what if I only have 1 item and it is listed on both sites. If it sells on the .com site I may not have time to go and cancel the .ca listing. What happens if a Canadian buys the item? Will ebay remove negative feedback when the second buyer is upset because I only had 1 item.

This is why the duplicate listing will not work.

Currently I just state standard shipping and put a note in my listings stating that I use both Canada Post and USPS depending on the buyers location, which is what I am going to have to continue doing. The method you have stated is not realistic for sellers to manage inventory.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Back to last week, I asked a question about offering "pick up" in our listings to remove the eligibility of the listing from the "It Ain't Yours Until You Pay For It" new policy, as suggested by an eBay employee (pink) in several posts last week on eBay.com.  I even supplied you with the links to those discussions.

You indicated you were not aware of the comments at the time.

A week later, can you now please confirm that by adding the availability of "pick up" to our listings, Canadian sellers will continue to operate as they currently do and our buyers will not lose the items purchased through "Buy-it-Bow" because they take a few hours or a few days to pay?

Thank you.

Hello lady.stark,

1) I'm not sure how PayPal would handle this specific case. What I can say is that this situation certainly wouldn't be common at all, so I wouldn't fear losing $0.30 very often. Keep in mind that your item has to meet all criteria in order to get the forced immediate payment flow. For Canadian sellers, this will not be the majority of their sales. Another thing to keep in mind is, as we introduce such changes, there's an inevitable transition period in which there will be some use cases like this one where the experience will be less than ideal.

2) Of course angry buyers who prematurely leave low DSRs may happen. It already happens all the time. Buyers who exhibit such behavior usually repeat that pattern enough for us to notice and take action though--provided sellers report them.

3) Again, this situation isn't different today than it will be after the changes. In Canada we are at a disadvantage for combined shipping because we don't have the eBay Shopping Cart yet. This is the reality for all Canadian sellers. The only way to work around this issue in this particular case would be to refund the buyer's initial payment(s) and send them the combined invoice after.

In response to adela_b's question in your second post (#3), it's true that this situation could happen, as it already can happen today under the 4 days rule for unpaid item cases. In such cases it's up to the buyer and seller to resolve the situation between themselves, either via eBay Messages or via the Resolution Centre is a case is open. Keep in mind that once an unpaid item case is open, it doesn't automatically result in a bad mark on the buyer's account. The unpaid item process specifically aims to provide an avenue of communication for both parties to find a common ground and most of the time, results in a satisfactory outcome for everybody. Also, if an unpaid item does end up being recorded on the buyer's account and they there was no response from the seller when communication was attempted, CS would usually help the buyer and remove the unpaid item.

Lastly, I'm sorry we can't give more than one hour a week for this discussion. Remember that we are all available via email if you have unresolved questions. Merci.

PS: Are you looking forward to Game of Thrones season 3 as I am? 🙂

Hi pierrelebel,

I got the answer to this. It is not true that just offering local pick up would override the new pay-to-own flow. It would only be the case if local pick up is selected instead of shipping. If the buyer of an item that meets all criteria selects any shipping service that isn't local pick up, they will go into the pay-to-own flow.

"If the buyer of an item that meets all criteria selects any shipping service....."

Please Raphael, that does not make sense.

At time of clicking the "Buy-it-Now, the buyer DOES NOT select any shipping method or pick up.  That is only done later when paying.

The whole point is that buyers do not pay immediately, The eBay employee (pink) indicated - and it seems right to me - that since pick-up was available, and payment could be made by methods other than PayPal or credit card, the eBay system would remove the item from the site and consider it sold.

Those comments by the pinks on eBay.com have not been retracted from the boards.

Anything else does not make sense, does it?

1) On the contrary, it does happen a LOT. I for one, as a buyer, do that all the time... MANY sellers I buy from have auctions (just auctions without BIN) and BIN items. And me, as a seller do have both too if you look at my listings.

3) Well, yes, the situation IS different today, because Immediate Payment is not required for my items. They buy and bid on multiple kind of listings and then ask for a combined invoice. Refunding and sending a combined invoice after will cost me another $0.30 in PayPal fees. NOT a good idea 😞

PS: Yes, I'm really excited about the new season! Can't wait!! 😉

Actually, my bad. I just re-read the answer I got.

When the changes roll in June, offering local pickup will prevent the pay-to-own flow. There is research being made for an eventual fix that will allow a buyer to select the payment method at the time they hit BIN, which will allow for the distinction I mentioned earlier.

In the shipping section, local pickup is only available when using Flat Rate Shipping. You cannot offer Local pickup on Calculated shipping. I posted about his issue in the first and second Weekly sessions.  Local pickup should be available for Calculated shipping. Will local pickup be available for calculated shipping?

Question: "If I have the option for local pick up for cash on my items will that make them not eligible to be part of the immediate payment required that will soon be on our items?"

Answer by pink: "Eligible transactions are those that are paid with PayPal or a merchant credit card (<$1,000 and shipping specified). Local pick up transactions will not be eligible."

... later... "Initially local pick up items will be excluded from the new treatment but as the feature is rolled out over 2013, this may change"

http://forums.ebay.com/db2/topic/2013-Spring-Seller/Local-Pick-Up/5100144339

Then, in many threads, the same template answer comes up:

"For items that are not eligible, the listing will be removed when a buyer commits to purchase. "

The new rule won't prevent a buyer from doing the exact same thing as they do today, the only difference is they risk not getting the BIN item if someone else pays for it before them. In most cases, everything should be fine. Don't forget that in time, buyers will also have to change the way they buy as a result of this update.
