I've been a buyer on Ebay for many years, but put my first listings for items to sell up this week.

Hi .. Your item was purchased by a new member. That alone is not unusual. What is causing concern.
You do not ship until payment is showing in your PayPal account either as complete or pending.
As a new seller , eBays hold paynent policy is likely to be applied..

Payment will be pending in your PP account and ship promptly.
Payment can also be pending if buyer pays with an echeque. Do not ship until PP advises the echeque has cleared. Takes 8-9 days.

It wasn't anything I could put my finger on - but the buyer never responded (to emails or to the invoice) and never paid. Tomorrow will be four days since he "bought" it, so my settings will auto-file an unpaid item dispute.
So I was right, it was a bogus buyer. I have my suspicions as to why it happened.

Hello 'carlos',
By now, of course, you will have added the person to your list of blocked bidders:
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/sell/manage_bidders_ov.html#block
You were aware that as a seller you can remove anyone's bid for any reason? You say you had your suspicions, - if ever you are not quite comfortable with a bidder, it might be easiest to simply remove and block. A practice not always good for business, granted, but so many things can go wrong, - if you've got a 'bad feeling' as some get, you do not have to continue to the end.
