My selling fees are going to go down?Somebody pinch me I think I'm dreaming

Hmm I just perused the spring seller update. I think this is the first time ever that I've read the spring updates and so far I think they are going to save me money! (I'm not sure what the "policy" stuff will do I think I'm ok but time will tell on that one). Maybe I missed something because my joys of savings overwhelmed my sense of reading and interpreting but at least I'm happy for a while!

I'm glad they're finall giving us "Store people" a break on the fees, at least for the first 500 (for me)

I have a premium store, looks like I'll stay the same with that, I don't use selling manager pro, I'm a turbolister addict so far at least.

Hopefully it is good news for the rest of you too!!!

Yep...you missed something. In round figures you now pay $50 per month for your store. To keep that price you now have to subscribe for a whole year otherwise it goes to $60.

You have 1365 listings:

current cost $50 plus  1365@ 5 cents each $68 so total $118

new "deal" $50 (at least) 1365-500=865@ 10 cents each $86.50 so total $136.50

Over a 15% increase and the more you list the more extra it will cost you.

The way I see it is carrot-and-stick (or more accurately, stick-and-carrot) -- eBay will be nudging store owners into the permanent contract corner, much like cell phones and other dubious service contracts, while scooping up the extra $4.00/month or more in store fees from everyone who would rather not commit to a long term contract.  They win at both ends, so this allows them to give a little on listing fees. It would take 20 regular BIN listings/month to make up the $4.00.  You can bet those monthly store fees will slowly increase over time to force more store people into permanent commitments, and once eBay has most of its buyers on a year-by-year tether, I'll bet those fees will rise too.

It makes me think of finding a rental apartment that is on a yearly lease only basis, with a big penalty for breaking the lease -- what if you really don't like the neighbourhood in 8 months' time?

So in principle I don't like the idea of a locked-in service (note those cancellation fees if you decide to leave - remind you of something?), but to keep my costs down, I'm going to have to go that route.  I wonder what those cancellation fees will be?  Pretty hefty, I'd imagine.

One thing I do see as a positive this time around is the requirement for a buyer to contact the seller before being able to open a dispute.  This is a sensible step I think -- does it apply on eBay.ca as well as eBay.com though?

Argh, well at least I was happy for an hour....

Staying where I am is actually worse for me than that.....I always list in two categories so it is really

current cost $50 plus  (1365x2) 2730@ 5 cents each $136.50 so total $186.50

new "deal" $50 plus 2730-500=2230@ 10 cents each $223.00 so total $273.00

So it is really over a 23% increase.....

However working these numbers against an anchor store means it is cheaper now for me to upgrade to it...

Anchor $180 plus 2730 - 2500 = 230 @10c each $23 so total is $203.00 which is "only" a 9% increase (I usually run 1500 to 1750 a month if you count replacements for sold items so in reality it is more like a 40% increase)

Sigh......

Anchor stores pay $0.10 insertion fee for aution listings and $0.05 for fixed price listings once they have used the first 2,500 free listings.

Currently anchor stores pay $0.03 listing fees for fixed price listings.

All that reading only to find out things will basically be the same with store subcription/fees as long as I subscribed for a whole year..

Fees for Media 9%

in total as long as I sign up for 1 years subsriction I save 4% on final value fees ..

All that info and it boild down to 4% less on FVF fees ...

I list 1000 a month so 500 free and 500 for .10 cents equals out to 1000@ .05 cents ...

Ya boy less fees for me .... Please somebody burst my bubble if I am missing something

Look at this page.

http://pages.ebay.ca/sellerinformation/news/springupdate2013/springfeesimplification.html?sspagename...

and then look to the footnote in the Table for fees....

‡ If you list in Books, DVDs & Movies, Music & Video Games additional listing fee is only 5¢ for fixed price.

Listing fees ... Standard fees  as well all three store levels....5 cents per listing  above the free listings number of listings....

Appears to be something special.......... for   Books, DVDs & Movies, Music & Video Games

Checked on the bookseller board on eBay.com... and that 5 cents per listing appears to be correct

That footnote makes a big difference.

Those on eBay.com say it is so.....

Reply 15 in the following discussion appears to confirm  the 5 cents fee

http://forums.ebay.com/db1/topic/Booksellers/New-Ebay-Fee/5100144122

Indeed - the cost is 5 cents insertion fee for Fixed Price for books even without a store.

as stated by an eBay "pink"

Definitely some confusion ... leading up to reply 15

Well all in all for my size store roughly 1000 fixed prices listings a month   I save $16.50 a month running a basic over a permuim store ...

I am stoked about these changes in my category but why would ebay make it so people wilkl drop to a basic store to save money ...

Premium store $49.95 500 free listings = $49.95 for store and first 500 listings

Basic $15.95 150 free listing ..For 350 listings $17.50 in fees =$33.45  for store and first 500

Difference I save $16.50 with basic store every month ...

NO Store $47.50 a month for 950 listings plus 50 free   which means premium is even worse then no store at all for me ...

Right now I pay $50 listings fees plus $49.95  Total $99.95 per month for store and to list

After I will pay a Total of $33.45 a month for store and to list saving me over 30%

Then I will also save 4% of selling fees as I pay 13% right now ...

THIS IS AWESOMEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeeeEEEEEEEE Thanks ebay

I still cannot believe that listing price...  for  Books, DVDs & Movies, Music & Video Games

Looks like in this situation  eBay is promoting Fixed price

List 50 books, no store... and listings are free....  Standard fees....

Only pay fees ... FVF ....when the book is sold.

Why list at auction... less exposure  and no guaranteed price...

Auctions are useless for books.....  Many times a book sells at less than $10 ... only to have my copy of that book sell for $25 to $35  within months..

and with an FVF of 9 % ... 7.2 %  for TRS sellers....

A Basic store  gives one an opportunity to have unique categories   for that store...  and an organized structure  separate from eBay categories  yet showing up within eBay categories.

Is a Premium store worth that few dollars extra?....  Perhaps... will have to do  a more in depth analysis...  A few things that a Premium store offers that a Basic store does not.....

eBay appears to be promoting fixed price for the  Books, DVDs & Movies, Music & Video Games.... and getting away from auctions....

Someone appears to have done an analysis   and perhaps flagged certain sellers to watch.

Someone has done their homework!

Anchor store.......  Several sellers  ... specifically on eBay.com were listing thousands of books  using...  an anchor store.....

Increasing a listing fee to 5 cents,  compared to today's 3 cent for an Anchor store....  may slow down those sellers with very high numbers of books on eBay... The store has to be managed... and not just left to sit....

I know a local bookseller with an Anchor store  and thousands of listings  (sometimes as high as 20,000) who rotates his inventory and is very happy with sales on eBay....

What will he say about this new pricing structure

"Then I will also save 4% of selling fees"

I wish it were that easy.  Unfortunately, you will need to look more closely at the new fee table.

Looking at some of your listings, your "Back in Black wholesale lot" selling at $330 currently costs you FVF of  $6.50 (13%) on the first $50 and $14.00 (5%) on the balance, for a total of $ 20.50

Under the new fee schedule, the fee will be a flat 9% of the total $29.70

This represents a net increase in FVF of $9.20 or 44.9%

So while FVF will be lower on low priced items. they will be higher on higher priced items.

As far as listing fees are concerned, it is more difficult to evaluate.  For the last year, eBay has regularly offered "free listing" promotions which have been widely used.  Under the new fee schedule, it appears there is no need for these promotion for most sellers.

To properly see the difference between old and new, one needs to include the actual effect of these promotions for each seller.  Personally, with two User IDs and no store, I have not paid eBay one penny in listing fees this year (thousands of listings), using the basic free auction listing (50 per ID per site) and timely promotions of both auction and fixed price formats.  There cannot be any saving in the new fee schedule for me as my listing fees were FREE and FVF are going up.

Your mileage may vary.  Check the numbers very carefully before jumping to conclusion.

One thing to keep in mind: the changes will net eBay more money.  That money comes from sellers fees in one shape or another.  While a few will benefit, others will pay for it. 😞

Heavens, you know I'm supposed to be good at math!

OK just for completeness here are my numbers reworked:

today premium cost $50 plus  (1500x2) 3000 @ 5 cents each $150.00 so total $200.00

new premium $50 plus 3000-500=2500@ 10 cents each $250.00 so total $310.00

new anchor $180 plus 3000 - 2500 = 500 @ 5c each $25 so total is $205.00

(this is only a 2.5% increase)

Given my selling fee rate drops from 11% down to 9% woo hoo it looks again like I'm saving!!

My selling cost (ebay and paypal) fees is between 15% and 16%. For those of us who sold stuff mailorder before the internet 15-16% is still very good. I continue to sell across a number of venues online and in print, and I have to give eBay credit that it remains the lowest selling cost of my sales venues.

Maybe they'll give me a price break for talking them up!!! 😉

Ya but for me 95% of my listings come in under $50 so as a total I will save from these changes on fees and store subscription ...

As far as promos I used my first one ever this week ... they always come either before i get inventory but this time I just decided to do some spring cleaning ...

this will as a whole end up saving me .. I sell very few wholesale lots that are expensive so not worried about that but it does suck...

for my number of listings, what i sell and the average price this change is good for me ...

After 2 years I am happy to have a break on fees for my items..I feel bad for the sellers of big ticket items but i have been paying total of 20% fees and absorbing shipping for a long time and in many cases am making 0 profits but I guess that is part of the game in what i sell..

I really wonder the impact this will have on big ticket item sellers .. i know for me it is a very positive change ...

I'm not looking to rain on your parade, but I would caution you to look at the impact of the flat rate % on your more expensive items.  This may may cause you to opt for a cheaper domestic bubbly rather than true champagne.  I hope it works out for you; it does seem so seldom that actions by ebay truly benefit our bottom line.

For myself, selling at the lower end of the spectrum, the combination of ebay and paypal fees has made any rewards to be gained here tenuous at best. I'm not jumping on the "I'm outta here" bandwagon, but I'm certainly re-evaluating what I sell here.  It is likely many of my items will listed elsewhere where is overhead is less onerous.

"would caution you to look at the impact of the flat rate % on your more expensive items. "

Valid point.

It is possible for a seller to save fees on 90% of his transactions yet, end up paying more fees overall.

If one sells 9 items on which the fees are lowered by $0.20 for example, one saves $1.80

Then on the tenth item (high value) the fees are increased by $2.00

Overall = nine items with lower fees; one item with higher fees = higher fees overall.

That is the problem when dealing with percentages.

With the new fee sctructure, lower fee percentages apply to small amounts (small dollar savings) while higher fee percentages apply to larger, often much larger amounts (large dollar increases).

As stated earlier, we should all keep in mind that the fee changes are not "revenue neutral".  They are meant for eBay to raise more revenue.  And eBay will.

No I am loving it .. I rarely and i mean rarely sell anything that big in lots and for it to be more expensive for fees for me it has to be over $100 anything $100 and under I save I save compared to current fee structure..

13% of $50 + 5% of $50 =$9

9% of $100 = $9

This will most be saving me a decent amount of money per year and roughly$100 a month Between downgrading store and fees...
