I sold an item on the weekend - a 12 strand tiny beaded necklace. Went to get it ready to ship Monday nite & not really sure how it happened but one of the strands broke on one end. Curses! I immediately sent an apologetic email to the purchaser explaining what had happened offering a refund right away. I then offered to either see if it could be reattached (doubtful) or removing the broken strand completely. Still would look great - with that many strands not really noticeable. Then if she wanted it like that we could sort it out. Problem is I have not yet heard from her even after sending a second email the next night. Not sure whether to go ahead remove the strand & mail hoping it is OK or what go do. Going to be late on mailing now anyway but not sure what to do. Any suggestions fellow sellers? My sales have not been too great since I closed during the postal uncertainty & really want to avoid any defects if at all possible.

Yes, I sincerely hope this ends well for both you and the buyer. Discovering last-minute damage is a situation any of us could find ourselves in, and no seller wants to end up with an unhappy buyer and a defect over it.
As an aside, the fact that few buyers bother to leave FB at all anymore actually works in sellers' favour in such instances. No FB, no late delivery defect possible. I'm still hoping some day eBay will decide to add a third option to the on-time delivery question, namely "Don't know/Can't recall". I know, don't hold your breath...

i would be content if they used the total transaction count rather than the way they do it now.

Yes, I agree with you that this would make more sense. At the very least eBay could post a separate total transaction count for users who are sellers. That's as much a reassuring factor for buyers as the actual FB.
In fact I'd be content if they threw the whole unworkable FB system out the window completely.
Another site I sell on simply uses reviews (not product reviews per se, but open reviews as buyers wish). That system works well because it isn't directly linked to seller punishment by the site itself -- the market decides seller status. (Let's not forget that although eBay doesn't count negative or neutral FB as defects anymore, certain low DSRs do create defects).
EBay now has a clumsy dual system of FB comments plus product reviews that is probably even more hassle for buyers to bother with. Nonetheless, as long as eBay holds onto the FB system they have, I believe it's still meaningful in a relative sense for buyers to compare sellers and as a reflection of seller service.
Sorry...off-topic again.

Not sure what she is referring to, you don't get a defect from a low dsr.

The low-dsr-defect disappeared at the same time neutrals and negatives stopped counting as defects, didn't it? When Late Shipment and Case Closed Without Seller Resolution became the two big sins, correct?
Yes, my apologies, you're correct of course. As of February 20, 2016, DSRs were removed as a source of defects. Sorry, I must have had a bit of an age-related synapse lapse, compounded by the unusually oppressive heat and humidity here yesterday which made clear thinking nearly impossible.
To clarify, from the horse's mouth (or the other end, as you prefer):
"Negative and neutral buyer feedback and all detailed seller ratings (including those for ship time and items not as described) will not count toward your defect rate. They will continue to be displayed to buyers on the feedback profile page but will not impact seller performance evaluation."

ship time still counts BIG TIME, it is just worded differently.. Did you receive your item by ???..

Just wanted to post an update to let you all know how this ended. Buyer received the necklace today and was quite fine with how it looked with 11 as opposed to 12 strands. She did not as yet post feedback but I think even if she did that the item would have been there in time as it was just purchased on Sept 5th and arrived today (16th). So all my worries were for naught but am glad that it did work out and I appreciate all the comments and advise that I received.

Yes, thanks so much for letting us know how things turned out. Your buyer has confirmed my belief that 99% of buyers are actually decent people who are reasonable to deal with.
I'm so glad this worked out for you!
