Seller raised the shipping costs.

I just bought an item this morning. The shipping charge was $19.00 and. When I paid for it the shipping charge was raised to over $28.00 and change US. When I ask the seller about it - he responded that he had to double box the item and so he had to charge me more money.

The shipping charge on the closed item is still $19.00 and change.

I know that if I had done that - I would have eaten the extra cost or at least given a partial refund if I got a complaint.

Is this allowed - and if not, can I do anything?

No it isn't allowed to charge more than the actual shipping price on the listing. Can you do anything..... I don't really know what you can do other than leave feedback about it. I'm not sure if you contact ebay if they will do anything in a situation like this.

Situations like this bother me because those type of sellers make buyers have a negative experience on ebay.

Re: Seller raised the shipping costs.

Look again at the lisiting.

Were you looking at the Canadian shipping or the US shipping?

Is the GSP involved? The seller's shipping charge is only from him to KY, the other $9 may be Canadian sales tax or duty and the PB service charge.

But if neither of those factors are involved:

A polite note that you bid on the basis of the advertised rate and a request for a Mutual Cancellation would be in order. Both of you are released from the transaction and you can both leave feedback (I'd suggest neutral with 'Raised shipping after sale.' ) and Detailed Seller Ratings. (Five is a normal transaction. The lowest Rating is ONE star.)

If he files for a UID instead, you will be able to point out the change in shipping from the listing to the invoice and win the Dispute. Even if you don't, a single UID would make no difference in your ability to buy. (Two or more in a year will, of course.)

You are right of course, if the seller expected to double box his item, he should have worked out the cost of doing that before listing. This is exactly why handling/packaging charges are allowed in addition to the postage/shipping charge.

Re: Seller raised the shipping costs.

And once again I would like to point out that if shipped using the GSP from a US seller the price you see on the first listing page is quite often wrong.  You need to read the whole shipping box under the GSP logo in the listing you will often see Shipping $19.00 taxes and duties $8.00.  Please be extra carfeul on GSP purchases and make sure you are ready to pay the total that will show up when you make the purchase.  Also if you are using a portable device the shipping with GSP may not show up properly.

THE GSP proving beyond a doubt that we really don't want you to buy from us..Go away rest of the world and leave us alone.

I think Crafty is closer. Seller may not have understood the question and made up an answer.

Is this seller using GSP?

Re: Seller raised the shipping costs.

Nah - he understood the question. He has 1700 sales. A couple of monthe ago, I bought a radio from him on an auction and I got an Addison L2 for $80.00 and he immediately refunded my money saying he had made a mistake in the listing. Baloney - the real problem was it is an expensive radio and I got it for about 1/6 of it's normal value. I was not happy and told him so. I almost left him a neg - but relented.

He is in Canada and the price for shipping was for Canadian Shipping - $19.29 US actually. Actually he should be able to send it to me for that amount in Canadian dollars never mind rasing it to $28,00 and getting 18% back on the shipping from Paypal.

The problem is he occasionally has pretty good stuff for good prices, I have bought about 10 radios from him repaired and restored them and sold them for a very good profit.

So if I give him a hard time he will likely block me.

Perhaps I should not care, as the bar for his ethics is pretty low and he is liable to stick it to me again.
