What's the best and cheapest method to ship an item such as this?  I'm going to use canada post, who say it will be about 21 dollars to the US, and I'm not sure how much within Canada, so I just put 15 assuming it can't be any higher.  Could I just send it in a padded envelope and only pay the cost of the envelope instead of the 20$?

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

Lettermail is limited to 2CM thickness. This will not fit the size limits of lettermail.  Canada post will be the cheapest method.  It will be around 10-15$ depending where in canada. You can always use their shipping rate tool at  www.canadapost.ca

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

thanks.  looks like my "guesstimation" for within canada was correct.

question: assuming you're from the USA, when you click the ad, does it show the USA shipping cost? because When I click the link I obviously see the Canadian one, however when I open the ad and look under shipping details, there is no mention of the USA option.  I hope it's showing.

AWW who am i kidding, it's not like it's gonna sell! LOL  what do you veterans think? will it sell?Man Happy

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

If the buyer specifies shipping to the USA and enters a valid ZIP code, the Shipping and Payment tab will show:

US $25.00
United States
Canada Post Light Packet USA

"what do you veterans think? will it sell?"

If you want an honest answer - without any sugar coating - I do not think so.

Most items with relatively low value and high shipping costs are not meant to be sold by mail (eBay or anywhere else) unless they offer something special or unique. I do not see anything special in that item.

As a Canadian, would you pay US$ 35.00 (Cdn$ 40.00 with exchange conversion) for it?  I would not.

I think you would benefit from buying on eBay for a while to get to understand and experience how the system works before you start selling.  It will also build your feedback rating.  Most buyers refrain from buying from new sellers with a zero feedback rating.

Good Luck.

It might, your price is average and these things apparently do sell well.

To see the shipping to aother country just go to the shipping and payments tab and change the country from Canada to whatever.

FYI - you won't be able to send that LIGHT Packet because of thickness, it will have to go Small Packet, if it's under 1kg that costs CA$16.03 so your $25 is a bit on the high side.

Well, I don't know about that Pierre, maybe it will sell.  I'm always flabbergasted at how well electronic gizmos and gadgets of all sorts and values sell on eBay these days.  Believe it or not, when I looked just now, the OP has had 5 people watching within the past hour.  Not that that necessarily means a sale, but he's got some interest going.

Still, your advice to the OP about buying for a while first is wise, and would be what I would have said too had he not already listed his item.

To the OP:  Try reducing your shipping prices if you can afford to discount them and still clear some money on this item.  If you use flat rate shipping and you can get the US shipping to below $20 (and the Canadian below $12 or $14), you might get a bite.

I'm actually surprised the US shipping would be as high as $25 -- how heavy is this gadget?  It doesn't look terribly large, i.e. it appears it would fit into the maximum 90cm total dimensional box for Small Packet (Air), which I find to be a very reliable (and quite fast) service to the US.  If it's less than 1kg, you should be able to send it for around $15-$17 I would think.  Do you have a weigh scale to check?

Also remember that if you use Paypal labelling through eBay, you will get a discount on Expedited Parcel that is significant enough to allow you to reduce the shipping cost you show in the listing by at least a couple of dollars. The Paypal discounts don't show up when you use the Canada Post calculator to check rates.  At the very least, if you intend to keep selling, get a Venture One card from Canada Post to get a discount if you ship in person from a Post Office or through Canada Post's own online shipping.

And yes -- there is a lot more to selling here than meets the eye.  Unfortunately eBay makes it sound very, very simple, but it's very, very easy to get into hot water quickly.  Buy for a while to get your feet wet first before jumping in the deep end. Woman Wink

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

By the way, if you want to increase your chances of selling this item, in addition to lowering the shipping cost shown, you should take some more pictures.  Take a few from every angle, take one or two of the card that comes with it.

Try to get at least 7 or 8 photos altogether -- you'll notice that eBay.com (and possibly also .ca) now displays right up front on the search results how many pictures are included in the listing.  EBay thinks photos are important, so sellers should too.

Do you have any  other details you could add to your description?  It seems pretty sparse.  For example, you might want to say when the unit was purchased, any condition issues (any scratches, dings, etc., or is it in as-new condition), used very little (?), weight of the unit, whether it works great, etc.  Make sure your description is both complete and accurate, and mention any special features.

Best of luck!

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

I'm assuming we have a rookie seller. My remarks are based on that.

Lack of pictures, no description, high price, incorrect shipping total, wrong title. It will never sell. Other sellers have these in the $20-$30, with shipping, range. Other sellers have it identified as "MadCatz" or some such name. Is it that? Is it not that? Not stated.

How about pictures, as ebay states, from all angles? You get 12 pictures, why only 1? If you are subscribing to the thought "People who know what it is will buy it", well, that doesn't work. You have to sell it to them. One picture and no description is not selling, that is listing it.

Use a complete neutral background. I am not a fan of using the floor. Seems other than professional.

If it is under 1K, why only "mainland" USA? The cost is the same to anywhere in the USA and its' various possessions.

Everyone has to start somewhere. You are starting. The toughest thing is to "suck it up Princess" and accept advice.

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

The best available to canada is $28 shipped without the memory card.  Non VMU card doesn't add a lot of value.   Id say you are few bucks above an almost certain quick sale, but you may well get your price with a little patience   Lots of interest and its not like someone can go to the store and buy  one.   I wouldn't worry about more pics, dont think it makes any difference at all for something like that.

You could go with calculated domestic shipping which would lower the price if someone was close and ensure you net the same if it someone in a higher cost location.  They've fixed the bug where calculated shipping wasn't showing correctly in the search result pages.  It would go small packet to the usa

I assume you're saying this on the assumption that anyone who knows what this gizmo is (I don't really) won't need a lot of photos to describe it, and you may be right.  However, from the point of view of visibility in searches, etc. eBay has indicated that more pictures = more exposure.  From that perspective, taking more pictures is a good idea, even if it isn't for the purpose of providing more visual information on the product.

I also think 'Mr. E.' is right about the non-professional looking background -- that struck me as a problem too.  The OP may be competing with some very experienced sellers in his category who know how to show an item to its best advantage.

Re: Shipping question from total noobtard

anyone who is searching for this knows what it is.  There will never be enough listed that search placement makes any difference, htis is ~15 years old and didn't last very long.  op is 1st of 17 on .ca for "Dreamcast gun controller" (newly listed being key,), but anyone buying is going to scroll by all 17 and buy by price.  This is not like listing something like clothes

"maybe it will sell. "

You are correct (maybe).  The guy is asking for opinion.  Mine is that it will not sell at Cdn$ 40. Yours is that it may.

When asking for opinion, there is no right or wrong.  Just opinions based on our personal experience.
