So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

Hi everyone,

I've enjoyed reading the discussions on the impending Canada Post changes, but haven't seen any posts on actual use of the Tracked Packet service.  I thought I would share my experience as objectively as possible.  Sorry if this is a bit lengthy...

Week of January 7

Sold a smaller <1kg item to a customer in the USA who wanted low-cost shipping.  I informed him that I could ship by Small Packet Ground now, or for a few dollars more ship by the new Tracked Packet service on the 14th to give him tracking (since it supposedly would be available directly through Canada Post, even if not through eBay/PayPal).  He elected to wait and pay the few dollars more for Tracked Packet.

January 14

I was excited to check out the new service, so I went to CP's Electronic Shipping Tools (using my Venture One number) first thing in the morning.  There it was, tracked packet!  After choosing the shipping method though, the system errored out.  I called CP tech support and they were aware of the issue, and said they were working on it.  It would be fixed in a few hours.

After lunch, I tried again and it worked perfectly.  Label printed, package dropped off at the post office.  Labels are a goofy custom size too, not a half page, not a quarter page, so now we have to buy custom labels from someone...  Hopefully PayPal will continue to use an even half-page when they're up and running!

January 18

Late Friday night, customer contacts me, the tracking number he paid and waited for is not working.  On the case, I tried the number on the Canada Post website, the CP iPhone app, and the USPS website.  Three different answers.  CP website - number does not exist.  CP app - Item has been delivered(!).  USPS website - Item has been accepted at a Canadian Post Office, nothing else in the week since.  I told the customer I was on it and would contact CP on Saturday morning when they reopened.

January 19

Called CP customer service around 9am (which simply hangs up on you if you call before 10am, which is when they actually open, as I discovered).  Called back after 10am and got answer number 4 - item is undeliverable and being returned to sender.  WHAT?!?  They said it could be for any number of reasons, label damaged, etc.  Never happened to me before, all my items are packed well, labels are covered with clear tape so they can't be easily damaged or removed, so this seemed unlikely to me.  They said it could take up to 5 business days to get back to me.  Obviously Mr. Customer would not be happy with the extra time it would take for me to get the item back and reship!

Not satisfied, I called the CP website technical help desk to find out if Tracked Packet was truly up and running.  I was able to speak with someone very helpful, who flat out said it is NOT YET AVAILABLE!!  It is an error on their part that the service shows up in their software at all, and the service would not be available until February 11th (a date we've seen before), and that I would get a refund since it is their mistake (we'll see...).

So I asked if Tracked Packet was available to purchase for Venture One customers directly at the post office; he thought so but did not know, and transfered me to the general customer service since he said they would know (lol).  Someone picked up the phone, and after much holding and deliberation with their colleagues, they didn't know anything.  They did not know that Tracked Packet did not work online, they did not know if if could be used at the post office directly.  They said go to a post office and ask, or try calling back later.  Since eBay states the service will not be available in PO's until Feb. 11, I'm guessing the answer is "no" anyway.

Final Comments

Like many others, I am deeply discouraged by the changes, as most items I sell are in the $40-$80 range, under 1kg, perfect for Small Packet.  However I do have to file claims 1-2 times a year (possibly unrelated, but a big CP theft ring was busted at my local facility recently 😞   ), so insurance is a must.  Rates for small items under 250g  have more than doubled to the USA compared to Small Packet Ground.  Internationally, rates have more than quadrupled using the same parameters but with Small Packet Air. eBay's example is laughable; $40 to ship a DVD to Europe!!  Who's going to pay $40 for a $10 item?  Oh well, there are many other things I would like to say, but again I'm trying to stay as objective as possible...

Thanks for reading if you made it to the end, I'd love to hear others' experiences!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I use a postal outlet in town that is highly respected and efficient with well trained staff.  They are much more pleasant to deal with than the Post Office.

I went there on Monday, Jan. 14, to ship some packages.  They had been told there would be some changes but had not yet received any written information regarding the new rates and services although many were to start that day.  The clerk also said that, on the weekend, he had had some online sellers come in to ship some items via Small Packet which came up with no insurance and (I think) the new rates.   He phoned his CP customer service rep and was told that the changes would not show up until Monday.  He explained that they were already up and running and when the rep checked he said they were not supposed to start until Monday but obviously were.  At any rate he had some very unhappy customers.  When I was there on Thursday, Jan. 17, another clerk said that the Small Packet would have tracking beginning in February.  I had to explain to her that it will not have tracking (she knew about the insurance) and that Tracked Packet is a new service.  They had still not received all of the information regarding the changes.

Needless to say, the clerks in that outlet were also very frustrated and upset with CP.  The service they provide for CP also reflects on their business which is stationery and office supplies.  CP really needs to get their act together.

Small Packet surface USA available until Februry 11, and then discontinued.

Small Packet options to USA or International no longer have insurance, as of January 14.

Tracked Packet, USA is available to commercial and on-line customer  starting January 14, and available over the counter at retail outlets as of February 11.

Tracked Packet International is only available to a very select number of countries....

Tracked Packet is present on Canada Post's website..... and even there the high cost option for shipping to the USA is wrong....

DO NOT USE  Tracked Packet until it is confirmed after Februaryy 11.

January 14 to February 11 postage.

If insurance is an absolute to the USA --- use Expedited Parcel USA

International shipping....If insurance is an absolute... then International Parcel  Surface or Air is an option.....Insurance over $100 and tracking available.

Postal outlet  do not (should not) know about Tracked Packet as yet

Definitely clear but I would like to mention that there is also the option of buying third party insurance rather than upgrading to expedited or International Parcel.

Thank you for the information OP. There seems to be a learning curve about the changes not only for sellers and other consumers but for the post office too!

Is it just me or do CP and ebay seem to do have some things in common?? ]:)

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

I've been hearing about the 3rd party insurance and will definitely look into it, thanks!  One seller mentioned in another thread that there are services that transport packages to the border and ship via USPS instead, anyone else heard of this or have more info?  Thanks!

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

Look for eBay discussions as they relate to

(1) Third party insurance

(2) Delivery to the US  and then use USPS

(3) Paypal shipping

(4) Ventureone membership  with Canada Post

There have been several discussions recently, pointing out advantages  and disadvantages.

Lots of thought  and lots of sorting out required....

a final question...

Do you really need insurance and tracking?

Already use lettermail/letterpost  without insurance.....  Adding another mailing option without insurance is not quite acceptable....

Small Packet Air USA without insurance

versus Small Packet Air USA   with third party insurance,

versus Tracked Packet USA with insurance  and tracking.

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

Insurance is a fools game, except on the expensive.  I have never filed a claim for insurance. 7500 sales, say, $1 a sale? If I had bothered to claim every freakin' time, jumped through the hoops, tied up my time, I might have got $700 back. Wait! That makes me $6800 ahead and no effort.

I was retail for 35 years. I learned the concept of "take it back and write it off".

Canadians are the most OVER insured in the world. Americans believe tracking is real.

I refunded a buyers payment a few days ago because he claimed his item had not arrived after five weeks.  Fortunately it was insured as it was sent in December by Small Packets Air which still included coverage at that time.  I will be phoning Canada post to file a claim and hopefully get my money back in awhile.  So, yes insurance definitely comes in handy.  As far as tracking goes, I've never had a customer request it.  As long as there is insurance both parties are covered should an item get lost.

As far as I can see the new Tracked Packet is just an excuse to charge alot more money to CP customers.  Small packet was affordable, safe and hassle free to use - why get rid of the coverage?  Why not give us the option of paying $3 or $4 more to add insurance to Small Packets?

Icfj_toys,

I really enjoyed reading your experience with Canada Post and its vaunted new Tracked Packet service - thank you for posting. Canada Post - a veritable ship of fools. I'm sorry you had all this trouble but, with respect, anyone who would seriously consider using this service, even when it's up and running, must be out of his tree. If you must have insurance coverage and delivery confirmation, to USA why not use an excellent, fast, tried-and-true, established service, viz. Expedited Parcel, which costs just a couple of dollars more? To International destinations - all  20 of them - Tracked Packet rates grossly exceed the already outrageously high Small Packet Air rates. Using Tracked Packet, to my mind, is sheer insanity.

Paying for insurance is a mug's game, except perhaps in the case of some extremely valuable item sent to some dodgy address.

Best of luck to you.

The argument is not that insurance does not occasionally come in handy, when a claim is made. The argument is that the premiums paid to the insurer  are higher than the payoff to the claimant.

Which of course is the reason why insurance companies are profitable.

Those who "self-insure" add a small amount to ever shipping and handling charge and toss those virtual pennies into a virtual cookie jar. If there is a claim, the claimant is paid off by the seller from the cookie jar.

No Paypal involvement, no Canada Post involvement.

Whether the claim is justified or not is irrelevant. The claim is as likely to be honest as fraudulent (okay- depending on your category). I've spent years selling retail and I agree with mr. elmwood on that.

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

I mostly send medium sized (30x20x10cm) boxes +- 1kg. At first I thought that tracked packet would be a huge improvement for my sales since I would have delivery confirmations for 20 countries. But then I realized the prices were insanely high (62.50$ VS 38.00$ small packet Air) to Australia for tracking.

I lost 1 or 2 packages with Small Packet and had no trouble getting my money back from Canada Post (for the item + service). I think I will simply be shipping anything worth 100$ or less with small packet, anything worth more than 100$ with Tracked Packet and anything worth more than 250$ with Xpresspost.

On a side note, does anyone know what's the most economical method of shipping? I use Paypal to print my labels with a thermal printer (Zebra ZP 450). I'm part of the VentureOne program seems it's never as economical as Paypal. Could anyone explain me why would VentureOne be better?

Thanks in advance!

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

Venture One program offers 5% discount on some shipping services (Expedited, Xpresspost, not Small Packet, not Light Packet, maybe Tracked Packet) while PayPal shipping offers 25% off Expedited Parcel and 8 or 9 % for Xpresspost, no discount for Small Packet and Light Packet, maybe a 9% discount for Tracked Packet.

Other than getting free labelopes and free Air Mail/Fragile stickers, a Venture One card is useless as far as I know..

IF you can believe Canada Post's current Find a Rate calculator, CP is indeed offering a discount on Tracked Packet to VentureOne customers. Here's a quote from one of my recent posts on another thread:

For a 300 g TP to USA and UK, the discount ranges from 4.7% to 5.4%.

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

Thanks for your reponse to my question pocomocomputing. That's also what I thought.
What's also surprising, is that a commercial account isn't as economical as Paypal. I guess that what most people don't know, is that they can simply create a free Paypal account to get 25% off Expedited Parcels and do it at home. Even if it's 2-3 packages a year, it's so much easier and cheaper.

I ship over 1000 packages a year with Expedited and the rates the Canada Post employee could give me weren't as good as Paypal. That's ridiculous considering Canada Post probably gives a good commission to Paypal for the shipping service.

In my opinion, Canada Post has to evolve in order to satisfy the needs of growing personnel and business online shipping.

Of course it is not surprising that Canada Post contiue to be imcomptence in many ways and cannot get everyone involved with the new mail service such as Tracked Packet.

Another sample is with the newly printed brochue with errors!!

To think they are getting paid a lof of $$ for doing so stupid things and with nearly little knowledge!!

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

Thank you for sharing!  eBay has yet to remove the surface option on my listings therefore I waited patiently for some orders.  The label would not print via surface but would air, showing insurance was still available for this option for now.  I list using InkFrog and they have confirmed "We expect the shipping updates to occur when eBay makes the updates in their API. We currently are unsure when this is going to occur".

I guess I will get ahead of the game maybe and try and remove the surface option as I am now out a few bucks each transaction.  I am taking one parcel to the PO tomorrow as it wouldn't print the lable period either air or surface (it would allow expedited) as my shipping on this item was free.  Will see if I can still mail surface via the PO directly.

Keep the good comments coming on this topic!  Thanks.

Re: So...anyone tried Tracked Packet? Here's my experience...

I also saw online the tracked packet option but I'm not quite ready to leap to online shipping, so at Postal Outlet today I asked about it and once again a different clerk had no clue about it at all. I'm waiting until after Feb 11 for sure to even bother thinking about this option. The one thing I find unfair though is that Canadapost yanks coverage as of Jan14? but don't offer this "new" service with coverage until mid Feb...too easy to have had them end and new begin same day? I see both sides of the ship cheaper uninsured save $ sell more..most likely and the insure and track and pay more...like mentioned above all depends on value of what you are selling and if you are prepared to take the loss if it disappears and you have no coverage.

I'm finding my US Buyers are thinking Everything is insured no matter what they pay in shipping. Its now a standard email I have to send to clear up that assumption. I also don't have high hopes for Tracked Packet being very useful to me..I'll probably keep my shipping the same. Interesting convo and experiences though I've learned alot about shipping do's and don't from here! 🐵

Cheers
