It's not the first time there has been more than one promo running at the same time.
There is actually a third one, the eBay Motors, the ongoing free vehicle listing promo.

Starting an auction at 99 cents is ... suicide..
Not for me, but then I have not listed an auction since March 2006... seven years

If you list less than 6 items in eBay Motors, you are considered a casual seller..
More than 6 and you become a "professional"
The eBay Motors one is always there.... I am so used to seeing it , I forget it is there.

I didn't get any...

Appears to be for eBay store sellers only.

I received the invitation but would never use it. Items listed at 99 cents would sell for 99 cents and attract less than desirable buyers.

So true .. most of my buyers that complain are the ones that pay less then $5 for an item .. I guess it makes sense though.. The broker you are the more every penny counts

If you look at shopping carts at a grocery store...
People with the least money buy the most expensive items.... and with the wrong nutrition .... and as a consequence they have little left to buy things such as DVD and more.
Smokers always spend money on smokes first...
and then they have little left over for leisure... unless it contains alcohol.
----------------------------------------------------
Local thrift store used to accept returns on video and DVD.... not today...
The same people kept bringing them back..... Returning for full value was better than renting a video. or DVD... or more...

cumos.... regarding the 99c start price, when I auction stuff I always start it at 99c - however I rarely auction stuff, and what I auction is intended to draw people to my store to buy other stuff, so in a way it is advertising. I do also list stuff that I believe will be popular and see what happens..it also starts at 99c...the downside is that 99c starts attracts the "bottom feeders" and I hate the situations where you have a few lots that close for the 99c price as you have all the usual work to send and a higher likelihood of problems with the 99c winners complaining etc....

Yesterday I saw a book that was listed at auction with a start price of $9.98
Book sold for $11.49... after two bids
Well over a year ago I sold the same book for $95.00
It was a rare local history.
I have seen too many books sell at a low price... at auction.... and many times they start at 99 cents or $9.99
Then there was a book that sold for $25 at auction..... looks good, until you find out I have already sold three copies of the same book for $125 each......
I see many sell books at a low price with the intent of selling it quick.
Unfortunately there is low... and then too low.
There is another seller who sells lower than me ... maybe 15 to 25 % lower .... but it is still a very good price... I call it bouncing a somewhat lower price against my higher price.....
Auctions for non-fiction... which I sell ....is nonsense.... not my approach to selling....
Only the most valuable of books should be sold at auction... and then at a relatively high start bid... and perhaps a reserve bid..... If it sells at the start bid, then so be it....

I agree - I think auctions just don't cut it anymore. It takes just as much time and effort to list an item at $0.99 as it does to set a reasonable price and get a buyer who really wants the item.
In the categories in which I sell, I'm not even sure that auctions on higher value items (with reserves) are worth it anymore. There are a couple of sellers I know who still run auctions on valuable antique garments, with market-value reserves, and they have to re-list over and over again to get a sale. Sometimes the item just doesn't sell and they ultimately have to list it as fixed price anyway. I'm sure those sellers end up paying 15% or 20% of the value of the item in auction reserve fees before they're through.
I do think you're right that auctions have value as a promotional draw. Still, I think fewer and fewer buyers want to bother waiting several days to see if they've won an item (or to be disappointed). It's far easier and more rewarding to just look for what you want at a price you're willing to pay.

Auctions work just fine if you do it properly!
99 cent Auction work fine too if you have either in demand stuff that gets bid up to a nice price or junk that you are happy to move at any price.
You can even make money at 99 cents if you have a good shipping arrangement and can charge "market rates" that include a nice handling fee.
Personally I do not get the same results with Fixed Price that I get with Auctions which is why I rarely bother with Fixed Price listings.
One thing is absolutely true (for me), my Auctions get many more page views in a week than my FP listings listings get in a month.

I tried some auctions, in a weeks space, three years ago. First time in about four years. It was a disaster. In my genrè, auctions go low, and BIN go high. I regularly see high dollar, $50-$100 go for under $10 in auctions. Auto parts is just different.
What good does a promo do for most of us? My max is 540 and i do not feel like calling and asking for more. Why are they sending me a promo when they know I can't use it? Makes no sense.

Over $20 billion in auction format sales last year. Even with ebay making auction + BIN near useless, and in some categories a very large fee advantage for FP while never an auction FVF advantage like there used to be, sales by auction aren't falling at all Pretty certain more was sold with auction in 2013 then 12, but not going to look it up to be sure

You're wrong! Auctions are dead!

Off topic
recped, I see in the listing that you are using SixBit now instead of soon to be discontinued BT Pro.
Good, bad, indifferent on the change. What issues did you have switching, if any?
03-10-2014 07:43 PM
SB is ok, it's similar to BT of course but a bit different. It will require changing the way I do things but I expect in a few months I'll forget how I did it in BT.
There are of course a few things I really don't like, same could be said of BT except it's different things this time.
I spent a few weeks running them in parallel, then made the switch completely at the end of February. I'm just now processing the first items sold.
The import from BT was pretty smooth, a few presets need to be tweaked slightly but nothing major.
I expect I'll cancel my BT subscription in the next few days.....pretty confident I'm not going back there.
One thing that irritates me is that there are a small number of features that come with the Enterprise version that I would like to have but the bulk of the extra stuff with that version (allocation plans and automation) are of no interest to me.

Congrats on this nice result for an auction start and finish. Tis the joy of an auction!!! How are you going to ship this item? I did not read your listing with shipping details but I am curious. Will it be tracked and insured or what?
