On April 24th I received a message from ebay telling me that they enhanced one of my listings primary photos. They had cleaned up the background and I admit that the picture did look better. They still left up the main picture that I had done but now it was the second pic rather than the first.
It did bother me a bit because I wonder if when they do this, they might inadvertently change some coloring or something else in the picture and cause a problem with a buyer. But in this case, it did seem to work in my favour as the item sold two days later. That could be because ebay gave it a burst in search or because of the picture looked picture or a combination of both. The listing has been up for a while...at least a few months.

This adjustment to a gallery photo has been reported on eBay.com.

I'm sure that they have been doing the same thing to others but I haven't seen any posts here about it so thought I would give a heads up.

Was it a purse?

Well, this really is of serious concern to me, and should perhaps be of general concern to sellers.
I spend a great deal of time taking "studio" style photographs of my custom-made, vintage and antique garments, cropping, cleaning up and otherwise perfecting those pictures and I most definitely do not want eBay monkeying around with them arbitrarily. I certainly don't want eBay "perfecting" my competitors' photos -- let them learn their own lessons.
If it's a stock manufactured item it may be a different story, but I still resent eBay getting its micro-managing fingers into this area.
Something to consider in this regard: Who exactly chooses which picture gets retouched and when? If the picture-fiddling ends up making a difference in whether an item will sell or not, that is direct interference in marketplace competition by eBay. It's even worse if this involves some sort of "bot cleanup", regardless of whether the resulting picture is actually better or not.
For example, it means a seller who regularly takes second-rate pictures will be elevated to the level of someone who takes great care with their item pictures. I'm certainly not saying you personally fall into the former category (I find your item photos very clear and good), but we've all seen the sort of lazy picture-taking that some sellers display in slapping up slightly out of focus, off kilter or poorly composed photos.
Does this mean eBay is experimenting in ultimately trying to make all photos on this site of the same quality? And just how will they choose who is to get this "helping hand" and how often?

So I wonder what happens when they mess up a photo and the seller never notices and an a buyer files a claim for not as described. In the case of a fabric item it is real easy to mess it up and things like a loose thread around the edge may be erased causing a problem when the buyer gets the item.

I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. They only touch up the main gallery picture so any other pictures showing flaws will be untouched. The pic that they did 'fix up' will still be there as well.

My concern is if eBay is doing that, then we would get lots of disputes of "not as described" all because of eBay's doing!! We don't need that kind of problems and end up getting the defects!!

Ummm... why don't they fix the cart and leave the photos alone.

Ruby Lane started this some time ago.
The main photo for each listing is processed by RL prior to posting the listing.
They raised listing prices when they did this.
I can't imagine eBay following suit but it seems like they might be testing it out. There are so many things that eBay has done that seemed unlikely and so you never know.
((An aside: It also looks eBay is taking the first steps to doing away with FB. Has anyone else noticed that it no longer appears beside a sellers id on listings?))

If you mean the feedback number I see it on listings including yours.
I wonder if you are part of a test because on this forum today I can't see your feedback number and there is no view listings link for you. I can see both for everyone else but not for you.

Yes, I wondered about that too (am seeing the same for the OP as you see - just the ID, nothing else).
