Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

"Buy American" has existed for decades, so, it is just starting to impact now?

I chose not to hide behind excuses. The money is there. The customers are there.

Actually, I've noticed many more "Buy American", "support U.S. business" ads on television than ever before.  It used to be a friendly slogan, now it's almost a banner of self-determination and independence.

It's not excuses, just explanations and being realistic.  The OP was worried about a slump, but I was trying to point out (as I think Pierre was) that ups and downs are inevitable and there are other constructive things one can do during those times.

There is also I believe quite a difference between selling truly discretionary articles and selling items that have practical usefulness or application.  I'm in the former category, so I have to be realistic about the highs and lows of customer whims.

Yes, the money and the customers are there (in the U.S.), and there is much a Canadian seller can do to bring the customer to make the purchase, but there is also a limit.  This is particularly so if we're talking about spending money on advertising or reducing prices/shipping, etc.  As has been said many times, we Canadians have to work just that much harder and smarter to be competitive.

Thanks inuk!

I'll consider about that and try to refine titles as you suggested.  Thank you very much!

Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

Frances, I was feeling frustrated today. My sales are off a bit only because I am way behind in my listing. So, I sashayed down to the wrecking yard and had an afternoon of "acquiring" a lot of the little bits and pieces I keep promising I will go back and get "next time".

Today was next time. OOMPH. I got, my retail, $700 worth of stuff for $10. Yesterday I got $1100 for $25.

I'm different. Well, not from Pierre I am not. Pierre taught me the adage "Know what you sell and sell what you know". I also did the classic turn a hobby into a business. I'm betting Pierre did the same thing.

A business is, well, different from selling. With business, yer skin is thicker. With business, downtime in sales, allows for the focus to shift to other aspects of yer business. I acquire more widgets, I do a lot of research. Research what is available for sale, what is selling, what I can get, what is coming into the wrecking yards, takes up a huge amount of my time.

I research what sells to other countries. I research what a car model in Canada is named, what the name is in the USA, what the name is in other countries.

You only have 49 things listed. I have 360 with another 300, easily, I can list. At around 400 listings, continually adding to the pile, I sell 100-120 per month. Throttle that back to 50, and you should be selling six (6) a month, based on the math.

You have very pretty stuff. Nice and girlie. I "think" your prices might be too low. Play with yer prices. There is a large segment of buyers who believe that the higher the price, the better they are getting.

I looked at one listing and your description was after the pictures. I would put it before.

Try different approaches with different listings.

I was at eBay Live in Chicago back in 2008. They had a "Listing Makeover" booth. You signed up for an appt. They, well, she Jennifer P, shredded my listing and re-did it with "best practises". She was a senior marketing manager.

I stood there transfixed. She completely tore apart everything I believed was right. She re-did an entire listing. I looked over my shoulder. there were 40-50 people watching me being shredded. The look on their faces was "Yer braver than me".

She asked if I wanted my listing left the best way or returned to the way I had it. I told her to leave it the way she had done it.

I said to her "Do you realize what you have done? My sales will double just on the format change." Implementing the changes, my sales did indeed double.

Too many people try selling with their "Id" when they should be selling with their "Ego".

A business needs constant building, adapting, changing, re-inventing, WTF do I do now. I see you are coming up on two years on this ID. 600 is pretty impressive for two years. I am 4500, but, that took ten years with the first two years not being anywhere near 600. LOL!!!

Good luck.

Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

April has been my worst month ever since I began selling in September 2011. Only 2 sales since the first day of the month. So you're not alone...

Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

Dear Inuk,  thank you so much for sharing your personal experience with me.  It's been really helpful.  I'm sure your insights will help me a lot for my future business explosion. I'm so glad and appreciated that many people replied me and advise me useful suggestions.   I spent most of my time on visiting power sellers' shop, doing research and searching more products these days...

Thanks for all of you!

I absolutely agree!  Why not try an experiment?

I think that you have multiples of  some of your items ? Put a few up at say, double the price and include your shipping cost. (So a $10 item with $2.50 shipping would be priced at $25 with Free Shipping). See which ones sell first and fastest. You could even switch back and forth from $10+$2.50 to $25.

If the higher price (with Free Shipping) does not reduce sales, continue with other items.

BTW, my ignorance is showing, is Swanncco a known brand? Or is it your own company? Unless something is a selling point it does not belong in a title. Same goes for a couple of titles that seem to include your  stock number. This can be useful to you, but should be the last thing in the title, especially with the touted move to mobile devices.

Did someone give that site for seeing how our listings look on a mobile? That can be a shocker!

At this point, don’t worry about ups and downs. Do keep monthly records. You may find that April is always a slow month for you. You may find that your monthly sales are fairly even but that they clump around the middle or the first week of any given month.

I had a slow week for sales, so I took time to list some new items. Half of those items I listed sold, one within a few hours of listing. This also seems to happen when I pull an item and use Sell Similar to relist it (I’ve been correcting shipping prices too.)

Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

Femmefan, many thanks for you suggestion,  I'm considering a lot of my listings, prices and selling strategies these days.  On the other hand, I'm continuous sourcing right items for sell.  Today I think about raise my selling price and including postage.  Yes, I'll try.

Swaanco is just my store name, not a known brand.  But I wish it can be a wellknown name in the future:-)

Thanks!

I've been a powerseller for 8 years and the last week of April until end of May is always the slowest time of year, every year.

Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

No sale days are to be expected....

Each year  I will have about 35 no sale days... an average of one  every 10 days.

The longest period without sales was four days...  back in 2009... and only after 42 days  each with a sale.  with about 1500 listings

A most interesting sequence..  now with close to 3000 listings .....a year ago

No sales on Monday and Tuesday

One sale on Wednesday... about $18.00

No sales on Thursday and Friday.

Yet that was my best year of 10 years of selling....

Lucky you 5 days!  For me it is the first time no sales for 15 days!!  I used to sold 1 or 2 items every day for 2 years until last year, it started to slow down.

Later I found out from the customer service that eBay don't put all of us into high search capability because of too many!!  Is that fair that we pay the hefty insertion fees and they put us in lower search capability??? NO!!

Now with the free listings, will it put us in much lower search capability or what?  I am not pleased and want to put in higher search capability for all the hefty insertion fees that I paid all those past months!!  Shame on eBay to be depective with us and "steal" $$$ from us from the insertion fees!!

????

I do not understand what you mean by "too many"? Too many what? Too many listings? Too many negs? Too many low DSRs?

What is your selling id with the issues? Then readers can see what and how you sell and your feedback. Then some suggestions can be given to try and help your sales.

Complaints about eBay without a clear explanation and facts are meaningless rants.

Excellent piece of advice about changing the first three words to accommodate the mobile gen! I did just that and bam! Great sales.

eBay claimed that they cannot all (I mean all!!) of us on eBay with higher search capabilitiy.  It doesn't matter if we have 100% feedback, good DSRs, etc., it is what they said to me!  Get it!!  I consider it deceptions on eBay's part by taking $$$ from us and then put us in lower serach capability!

Funny that eBay would want fixed price auction prices and put us in lower search capability when in fact, they could earn lots of final value fees if they put us in higher serach capability and then our items would get sold and then eBay can earn lots of final value fees that way but it seems they prefer the other way.

Re: feel frustrated, no sales over 5 days

"eBay can earn lots of final value fees that way"

Whether we like it or not, we have to look at it from eBay's perspective.

Only one thing really matters to eBay: more fees leading to more profits.

eBay knows that all buyers in the world shopping on eBay can only see so many listings and spend so many dollars each day.  eBay does not care if your listings or mine or others get seen by potential buyers.  All they want are buyers to bid or buy "stuff" leading to more fees resulting in more profits.

You or I or anyone else on this board will never convince eBay that showing our listings up front will result in more fees leading to more profit for them. That is the only thing that counts, as far as eBay is concerned.
