gibberish user names

I just asked someone whose user name was basically a bunch of gibberish with a couple of periods breaking it into three parts how he got the name (registered in November 2013).  His answer was "they kind of just gave it to me".  The first part was a nonsense word that maybe he picked, the second part was the first two letters of his last name (coincidence?) and the last part was a random string of letters.  I guess ebay was, at least for a while, generating nonsense usernames.

gibberish user names

Was they buyer a member at the time he got the name? Did the buyer purchase first without an ebay account as a guest and get assigned a name for the first purchase?

If so, then ebay may be generating unique names for a guest purchase and sometime later the buyer activates it permanently?

Speculation on my part?

gibberish user names

I had seen people speculating in the forums about what the crazy user names might mean, so when I saw one myself I asked him.  I didn't think to ask him if he was some kind of guest ebayer when he received it (he has feedback in the low 20's now).    I won't bother him again but maybe the next one I'll ask.  I'm curious now - I had no idea you could buy on ebay without actually registering.
