if i put a max bid of $100 on a item and the next hightest bid is $80 , do i sthill have to pay$100 for that item

You would pay what the winning bid (at end of auction) was.

If your max bid was $100 but the end bid was say $81.50 you

would pay $81.50 plus shipping and handling.  The shipping and

handling may take it over $100.
