I just bought a musical instrument accessory on eBay, US$29.99. The import charge levied by Pitney-Bowes (who have some sort of shipper/warehouse/fee collector relationship with eBay) was almost US$10. 30% of the cost of the item. Outrageous.
I would like to know how Pitney-Bowes configures this, what the formula is. If I were to buy a used saxophone from the US and have it shipped to Canada, in addition to the shipping costs, would I have to pay P-B US$200.?
I won't call this a scam, but it sure stinks.
What would help is a full, thorough explanation from someone about why the fee is collected, where the money goes, and why the fee is not "up front" in the item advertising.

This is very interesting. I called ebay and took issue with this When I bought a necklace. I took it on the charge of 20.00 and shipping cost of 14.25, and there was this sign saying "no additional import fees on delivery" and then I was nailed for another 15.00 for a necklace that now costed me almost 20% more than retail. I talked to one of there "legal" reps and he said it is an ebay charge. When I stated that you have a great big picture and promotion that "no import duties" then in small print, they have import duties. I outright told him that it is false advertising and you should have heard him back up and try to double talk me into dropping the subject. Finally he admitted that ebay is wrong in posting that and they are "looking into this". I'll believe that when martians land on earth. It is bad enough that we in Canada pay a outrageous amount for shipping with all the USPS and customs charges, now we are getting all these extra charges. Am I the only one angry about all these "charges"?

What is the listing number for this necklace?

Any seller that has automatic import charges certainly loses me as a buyer. I refuse to buy from them because if it's left up to Canada customs I only pay import charges on about 1% of the items I order from the US. They let most of it go through with no fee.
I wish I could do searches that blocks out sellers with the automatic import charges. It's such a waste of my time to view their items.
