am i the only one that see's that the prices that ebay seller's start with are at or above retail prices,it seems lately that most seller's are using ebay as a retail store not an auction like it used to be it's no wonder that there are so many other real auction sites popping up , i think ebay should take a long look at these practises before they loose creditability asd an auction site and be labled a retail selling site !

my item sits with no bids and then two hours before auction closes, three snipers zoom in and bid. If there had been more time, they would have bid against each other and I would have made more money.
If you have multiple snipers, each making his maximum bid, surely the highest bid wins? Or are you thinking that bidders would nibble and/or get auction fever and bid wildly?
Since my items are slow moving, (vintage paperbacks, dress patterns, postcards) I prefer to have them exposed for long periods to allow customers to find them. Fixed price is definitely best for me. But as a buyer (mostly brand name purses) I like auctions, since I don't need the item urgently and I can set my price and if I'm outbid, the other bidder paid too much.
Which of course is exactly the opposite of what I would want my customers to do as a seller.

I'm thinking that like most "auctions" in real time, people would put a good effort in bidding to acquire an item, not sit back and place a bid 12 secs to finish and snap up something for nothing. I've had to increase my listing prices to compensate for this. If I sell high end and no one bids with 12 hours left on the auction, then I end and relist, and take a minimal loss compared to a large one. This way I still entice true bidders with low prices, but protect myself from would be snipers.
I too have been switching over to fixed prices for my higher end items because of snipers.

Here is why we seller no longer like auctions ... Listed 500 auctions so far 50 have not sold and 300 still going and 150 sold ALL at a loss ...
So now why would as a seller want to do this again ...
Buyers don't care about retail they like quick and easy... compare say one of my listings a retail price... you click buy now a week later it's at your door and all you had to do was click a button...
Go buy the item retail now you have 30min-2hrs pending where you live... you have Gas.. All those extra expenses and for what when you could of stayed in you PJ's and bought it at the same price minus the time and expenses...
Seller aren't ripping buyers off buyers don't realize the 20% fees we have to deal with on every sale....
buyers controlled where ebay went and auctions are not the way thanks to THE BUYER not the SELLER .. If the bidder were still here we would still sell auction .

Way too much competition on Free Listing Days all thinking the same thing, "Lets Try & Move Some Deadstock. "
The sellers of unique items, that don't include t shirts, seem to do well.

I totally agrree that Ebay should curb this type of selling as it's obvious that these sellers are using Ebay as a store rather than a true auction.
Another point I'd like to make it how outrageous some sellers are with their selling prices.
I like buying Cuban convertible Pesos so when I travel to Cuba for holidays I have some
tourist money to spend when I arrive which saves me running to the Cuban bank.
The money in Cuba is only good in Cuba. It does not matter if you talking about the local Cuban peso or the convertible peso neither one is traded on the world market or recognized by the world bank.
One Cuban convertible peso is valued at one American dollar, so why do so many sellers on Ebay think they can ask $60.00 for a 10.00 peso banknote. I watch these auctions & they never sell because the money is only worth it's face value 1.00 convertible peso = $1.00
Ever worse is the seller who will only ask what the money is worth then have the nerve ask $20.00 to ship it when the postage is somewhere near $1.50 U.S
Just my 2 cents worth.
