Earlier today, we announced plans to implement a Paperless Payments policy for eBay Canada.

As most of you are likely aware, a very similar safe electronic payments policy was implemented for our US site last year.

On April 15, we'll be here from 11am until noon EDT to do our best to respond to any questions that you might have with respect to the new policy.

Hi canadiancindyb

Thanks for your questions. While you may choose to accept other payment methods if a buyer asks you (i.e. cheques, money orders, Canadian Tire money...), you can't offer these payment methods in your listing.

Of course, the transaction would then no longer eligible for buyer or seller protection...

Hi rykkm. Thanks for your question.

For purposes of keeping the marketplace vibrant and keeping our bad buyer experiences at a minimum, eBay made this policy change to no longer accept Cheques and Money Orders. However to ensure that buyers and sellers have choice in terms of methods of payments - we have reached out to multiple stand alone companies such as Propay and others. In addition, these stand alone payment companies have to go through a strict process to bcome an approved payment method on our site.

As for Canadian Tire money, you may choose to accept it if a buyer asks, but you cannot offer to accept Canadian Tire money in your listing. And should you choose to accept CT money for payment, seller and buyer protection won't apply to that transaction.

Hi rykkm...

I forgot to add that we do not have a stake in Propay.

Since I have been to the Propay site to have a look at it...Any idea when they might make their price structure visible instead of requiring someone calling in.

They have one available on the dot com Propay site and from what is available there, Propay is not an option for ebay unless you are a Powerseller. That is how it reads to me.

Do you know if it works the same in Canada?

Thanks pierrelebel.

> There is an auction listing offering an item with a starting price of thousands of dollars, located in Asia (listing heading claims Ontario), offering PayPal, claims money will be "held in escrow for 4 to 6 weeks" until the item arrives from Asia and the total proceeds given to well-known charity (link in listing).

As always, I can't comment on specific cases, but I trust you that it needs to come down. 😉

If you can forward the item number to customer support they're on the thread right now and will be waiting for the listing info.

Clarification with respect to the 3rd party payment processors: we specifically reached out to the payment companies that were included in our accepted payments policy.

Now maybe T&S will take a look at other listings by the same seller with similar Red Flags....

... or is it something they do not do?

Do they wait for other members to do their job and investigate?

According to this the Adult Section is NOT included in the checks and Money Orders

Are there any categories excluded from these payment requirements?

I want to correct/clarify something I stated earlier regarding accepting credit cards via telephone.

I got too far ahead of myself on saying that sellers can't accept credit cards via telephone or other methods (fax, etc.). This is permitted on eBay at this time. So I apologize for this misinformation.

eserafini, you are correct that this is not the ideal way to make a payment; however, buyers would not be entirely without recourse, as they could do a chargeback through their credit card company if there was a significant problem.

As you probably know, eBay is moving toward integrating the merchant credit card system into checkout which will help make the transaction more consistent and secure upon checkout. We expect to have more information available about integrated merchant credit card checkout this summer.

Apologies again for my error on this part.

Rodney
