Region codes of DVDs are assigned to different regions of the world and are made to play in DVD players of the same Region.
The common North American DVD player is designed to play Region 1 DVDs only.
Some North American DVD players are Region 0 coded and can play any Region of DVDs. You would need to look at the information booklet of your DVD player to see if this is the type you have.
