I bought an item that was $99.95 US. The Seller charged me $16.00 for UPS standard shipping to Canada.

The package arrived and here is a Brokerage C.O.D. due to UPS for $54.17. What a rip! The seller said nothing about additional fees due IN ADDITION to the $16.00 I paid him for the shipping. By looking under Help in eBay, I see there is nothing I can do about it.
The money's the same, whether you earn it or scam it.

Appreciate all the responses guys.

I will probably go with the option of paying all the invoices in full and then having fedex get the taxes and duties refunded back to me from Canadian customs.

I don't think Fedex cares how I filed the paperwork, they just REALLY want that brokerage fee.

Let me clarify something... the reason why I was charged taxes and duties was because I left out the word "warranty" when I put down "repaired and returned".

Fedex said I could send them revised commercial invoices with the word "warranty" added in the item description and they should be able to get me the taxes/duties refunded.

Don't know if I should believe them b/c they will probably say anything to have me cough up the cash. But it looks like this will be my best option. If what they say is true and I get the tax/duties refunded, I should only lose about $8,000-$9000 instead of the whole $15,000.

I got burned as well after receiving an item on Dec 14/08 valued at $50. UPS sent an invoice to me on Jan 9/08 for $38. About $30 for brokerage, the remainder are taxes / customs fee. You have to pay. Any item more than $20 sent via ground will incur these costs. Best way around it is to have it shipped USPS. I learned the hard way too.

I was billed $110 brokerage fee from FedEx for collecting $3 in duteies and $10 on $176 dollars worth of electronic parts. The brokerage service falls into "unsolicited" service cathegory since we newer agreed to or requested it. Ontario Customers Protection Act prohibits such a services and customers are NOT OBLIGETED to pay for them and can demand a refund for it.

50% UPS Brokerage fee????

$110 - brokerage
$3 - duty
$10 - ?

Let's try this again: take a look at your copy:

- how much is GST

- how much is PST

- how much is brokerage

- how much is actual DUTY charged on the item (where was the item made? china? japan? korea? it had to be OUTSIDE North America to be judged duty-able)

50% UPS Brokerage fee????

Hello everyone,

UPS charged me COD of $37.56 in which $29.55 was brokerage.

The seller have incorrectly declared on the custom forms, stating the item was value at $50, but not the actual final sale price of $18.99. According to UPS brokerage fee chart, any parcels under 20.01CAD are brokerage free. Therefore, I shouldn't have been charged duties, brokerage or any other fees if the seller have rightfully declare the correct value of the sale price rather than slapping on the shipping cost as part of the item's value.

I have contacted the seller regarding the situation. I will also contact UPS tomorrow to see if there are any claim forms I can fill out.

In the meantime, do you guys have any advice or help for a situation like this?

Any help is much appreciated:)

Thanks so much!

Dee

In response to Canuckchat:
Looking at my Invoice from FedEx Trade Networks
Duty and Taxes $3.91
GST/HST $10.60
Brokerage Fee $109.50 plus $6.57 GST
Disbursement Fees $5.85 plus $0.35 GST
Total 136.78
Value of the package sent from US to Ontario was $172.75 and it contained various electronic elements (resistors, capacitors, transistors) - may be some were made outside of US. Still, stiff penalty for ordering on Internet. Since, I could have played broker myself if opportunity to do it was given to me, FedEx said that they will charge it to the shipper. Shipper told me that similar requests are always ignored by them - FedEx knows that this is a tricky situation.

If you are wondering why people are so upset about Brokerage Fees and how they are forced to pay them,
check the following link http://www.classaction.ca/content/actions/ups.asp and read the Statement of Claim. If you are in Ontario, you can join the Class Proceedings.

jarekmw -

You are saying that you were charged $109.50 on a $172.75 item - that is very, very wrong. FedEx does not charge that much on a shipment of that value. They must have an invoice / document with a much higher value? You may be able to get some money back if you show them it was $172.75 value.

Also, just so everyone knows - UPS raised their rates in the last week or two.

50% UPS Brokerage fee????

- duty (and tax on that duty) at 3.91 was pretty minimal so not much to scream about there

- agreed that the 109.50 brokerage charge was a bit excessive and I would be asking if they mistook the seller's marked value on the package to be 1,727.50 instead of 172.75

I called FedEx to inquiry about the brokerage fee amount and was told that the fee is not always based on the value of the package. In my case, they decided to create an invoice listing each item in the package separately (in spite the same duty classification code for most of the items). As a result the invoice is very long and I was told that in situation like this they multiply number of lines in invoice by set up amount to come up with this broker fee. They are claiming that there is nothing wrong with it. Be aware - even if you are prepared to pay courier company brokerage fee, you can not be sure of the amount until invoice arrives.
