FAKE tracking provided. How?

I recently had a scam order where the "overseas" shipping put in a tracking number, it show progress IN Ebay tracking, but it turned out to be fake.  How is it possible that scammers are able to show tracking progress in Ebay itself?  Ebay I assume controls that.

How do you figure the tracking number is a dud? Did you try on what you think is the carrier’s website?

If it’s an item from Asia, it’s not unusual for the item to pass through the hands of multiple carriers, in a manner not unlike the Global Shipping Program or eBay International Trading. The tracking number might be for a carrier that doesn’t have possession of the item yet. Have you tried looking the tracking up on a universal tracking site such as Parcelsapp?

EBay shows tracking for specific  carriers.  If the tracking number is valid for that carrier than eBay should show the same/similar updates as the carrier's site,

Was the tracking number for someone else or it stopped tracking or....?

FAKE tracking provided. How?

I had something similar happen to me.

Purchased an eBay item on April 11th, 2023. As per eBay, the item was shipped on April 18th from China with a Cainiao tracking number and an eBay estimated arrival date to me in Canada of May 18th. The item showed shipping progress on eBay but for good measure, I also tracked the item on a 3rd party app to confirm the number's validity. From April 17th to May 8th, the tracking went from 'Accepted by carrier' to 'Inbound in sorting center' to 'Oubound in sorting center' to 'Arrived at departure transport hub' to 'Leaving from departure country/region' to 'Airline departed from orignal country' to 'Airline arrived at transit country or district' to 'Post office collection' to 'Airline departed from transit or district country' to 'Arline arrived at destination country' to 'Arrive at destination country' to 'Inport clearance success' and finally to 'Arrive at sorting center in destination country'. With this, it seems to me that the package arrived in Canada. However, at this point, all goes silent with no more updates or movement.

After the delivery date came and went, I contacted the seller several times to request their intervention with the carrier. I never got a reply and upon my last communication eBay advised that the seller was no longer listed. I then promptly requested for eBay to step in with their Guarantee and was promptly refunded the full transaction on June 9th.

All that being said, I too cannot figure out how the package tracking indicated that it had arrived in the destination country and then, all stopped there and went cold. Was eBay somehow fooled into thinking that all of these shipping milestones actually occurred? Was this transaction a fraud? Is Cainiao courier in on it? No clue... but at least I got a full refund without any questions asked.

Good.

That is the proper action to take.

We have 30 days from the last estimated date for delivery to open a Claim and be fully refunded .
